I'm not really sure of the answer for any of these questions, as i came back recently. I was gone for 7~8 months but tons of events/gears were added in that time. Now you can get decent exp solo frome lvl 1 to 75, MMM system & few other things. ( This is a good start : http://killingifrit.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=176492 )
About farming, i read a lot of crafted/NPCable items were "adjusted" so they don't give that much gils, like crab sushi or blood from bats @ Zi'tah ? )
Websites like FFXIclopedia don't have some kind of list about past updates ?
WB btw.

The lowdown is that you still suck. J/k j/k jk.I'd take the sticky you were referring to with a semi-grain of salt. It's not a bad guide, but some of the stuff in there was debatable even then. And I see that DT is the second poster in there. That means that was like, tantamount to an entire FFXI generation ago xD.
If you have lots of gil (doesn't seem to be the case yet if you're going NQ on the heca feet), there is a lot that can be done with gil these days. We're at the state of the game where "mercing" is becoming both more sensible and common. Even ground kings have their price on many servers. I'd check FFXIAH.com for that kind of stuff.
The big things to come out in the past year and a half would have to be... The revamping of Nyzul, the actual feasability of Einherjar, the zerging of AV (my bad, that had only lasted for a week >,<; though it may be possible to buy Mars's/Ninurta's for a high price), WoTG HNM's (the gear isn't r/ex), WoTG misc NM's, WoTG stronghold NM's and their corresponding BCNM's, campaign items and high-level campaign ops BCNM gear, MMM, ANNM's (allied-notes poppable NM's), ZNM's and Pandemonium Warden, ACP and...that should be it unless I'm missing something.
Evisceration may be a good option for you to use as an unstacked weaponskill. There's a lot of debate on it. I'd check the current 2nd page on this forum or recent threads on Allah' for more information. IF you want to build an EV set, sandworm and campaign-ops bcnm's have the items you'd want. Don't counton doing the campaign ops though. This requires your nation to win over every territory (includin the enemy beastmen stronghold) in their region. This rarely happens. However you can still buy a Cuchulain's Belt and Mantle from this BCNM off of the AH. For EV/DE, sandworm has oily trousers (if you don't have heca), antares harness, ancient torque (if you don't have love / want to put acc on a ridill), and black tathlum (expensive and I'm not even sure if it is good for DE/EV). Buying all of those items save tathlum/torque would cost around 11m or so.
MMM has an evasion dagger: Ermine's Tail. ANNM's have also made star sapphires readily available, meaning Adder Jambiya's (another evasion dagger) are feasably craftable atm.
ANNM also has some potentially ok gear. The beefed-up dragon mittens should be nice for SA at the very least. There's also a ring that looks like it coudl be good for DE. I think I heard somewhere that you can get a triumph earring with 4 attack on it as well. You can also many trade items when popping certain NM's to risk your luck at getting a good augment added.
Since Nyzul is now revamped, you'll want to get a swordbreaker and unlock mandalic stab. It's supposed to be possibly better than Mercy on high level mobs? I'm not sure, I haven't even gotten a swordbreaker yet >,<. And if you hadn't gotten Nyzul gear before, it's always something to go and do (ie denali head and body for TA).
If you don't have N.legs and don't want to rely on an HNMls, fighting Odin in einherjar is always a viable option. There is also a form of non-tradeable currency you get after every chamber, called ampoules. You can exchange these at an NPC for items. I believe Kubira Bead Necklace is the best Sa+Mercy neck. There's also a fairly useless ring which might be good for full SATA+DE, and there is an earring that is competable but not necessarily superior to Hollow/Pixie for DE. Buccaneer's belt as well for maximizing ranged accuracy.
Among the misc WoTG NM's, I can only think of deae gratia (a very decent club for Thf) being useful. But I might be missing something. As for the stronghold BCNM, there is Gnadbhod's Helm which maybe (maybe) could be nice for SA--and I suppose also possibly for EV/DE if your fStr is capped (which is probably not the case).
ACP has new augmentable bodies. You choose to create a custom body that either get what is probably the best /nin body, or what is possibly the best EV body, or the best evasion body, or what is possibly the best ranged body for thief.
ZNM's don't have too much to offer thief. The Enkidu's gear isn't terrible. Head is pretty useless though. Body is one of many available hybrid tanking pieces. Hands are decent for SA and can also double as a decent ranged accuracy piece. Legs are great for WS if you don't have heca. Feet are terrific for SA/TA if you don't have striders/skadi to use (which I would recommend instead).

Well thanks for the huge post about a lot of stuff that in the end isn't that important, though some of it was mildly educating. My gear is better than most of that, all I really need is a few "top items" as I have Love Torque, I'm now 5/5 Homam (was 4/5 before I quit, got homam head my first day back lol) and once I get gil I'll be 4/5 heca, all but legs.
From the looks of it all I really is is gil, gil and more gil. Which is fairly annoying since I've been out of the game for a year and a half and completely lost track of the economy, so I have no idea where/what to farm, lol. Ideally something DC~ level so I can finish skilling up parrying too. I've just found something I can craft, so once I get something to farm I can then do multiple things to farm depending on my mood. Seems like it'll take forever to make gil, though, /sigh.

You'll figure it out.
Though if you're looking for any other new and nice thief gear other than what's in the above fairly comprehensive report, you are out of luck. There is nothing new that is game-breaking. Even Vajra is supposedly garbage.
However, what will set you apart as a hai-jin thief is accumulating these kind of extra tweaks. And after awhile adding up a couple of them becomes as if getting a single, significantly better piece of equip--performance-wise at least.
How much play time do you have? Are you back hard core or is it more of the adult weekend-warrior style?

Well, I just might be back hardcore. I still have WoW paid for until October and wouldn't want to be paying for two MMO's at once, however without a guild to raid with (old one fell apart and everyone xfer'd off and such) and with the recent nerfs to kill my prot paladin PvP (I like being the "underdog" in my games) I'm really not feeling the desire to play it.
Today was my "first day" back and I did Proto-Omega, what I pray is my last Dynamis ever, a Nyzul assault and joined a Salvage LS. A LOT of people I know seem to be returning too, which is kinda funny and really nice. The only thing that sucks is that I've come back to less gear than I used to have and without the gil to replace that gear I had around, since my friends took the gear and feel no need to compensate me, which annoys me.
Tomorrow I hope to get into the new stuff over the last 1.5 years, but we'll see. I want to set up groups for ZNM's and ANNM's, maybe do some old school ENM's as well. And hopefully start progressing in WotG missions. But I'm getting low on gil already and I can't even level a different job for fun because I simply cannot afford gear, lol. My last few months was basically Campaign spam, so I've already got 90k notes to throw at ANNM's and from the sounds of it I'll never run out of them.

Damn, sounds like you're fresh out, lol. The state of the American economy must be moving like a full-speed train of suckage. I keep hearing people saying that there's no way they could pay for 2 MMO's. Idk, I don't have any consoles and I don't pay for extra cable, or a fancy cell phone plan. I have two FF accounts and I think I'd easily shell out to pay for an FF account at the same time. An old roommate of mine used to always complain how many hundreds he'd spent on FF since he'd been playing. Personally I don't know what I would have done with the money otherwise. I doubt it could have been better spent.
Sounds like you are indeed back in full force. That is good. I imagine after a time you won't have too much trouble making a gil. Sounds like your friends weren't quite what the word means
. Good move on the WoTG missions idea. I need to actually get in gear and do that finally, what with the recent news of xarc, etc, being open next month. I'm really hoping it's gonna be sweeeeeet.

Oh, I can afford to pay for both, I just would rather not, lol. It's a matter of principle.
I'm real annoyed with my friends, I know I was a jackass when I quit and all, but I still let them re-activate my account to take my stuff. I'm pretty sure my DRK was geared when I quit and I don't have earrings, a weapon, neck, chest, etc. now lol. Not sure there's anything I can do about that. But at least it seems a lot of old friends have returned to the game, so getting it back may not be so difficult.
I'm sure I'll find a way to make gil eventually, I'd just prefer to get into it now, I don't have money to spend on much and I'd like to be able to gear up a random job and level it if I felt the urge.

So then, what you were really looking for was... an update on where to make gil?

Posted 09 June 2009 - 04:52 PM
Yes. That and the few items that may have been upgrades for me in the last 1.5 years of updates. You know how there used to only be Amemet+1 and then Forager's came out in ENM's? Lots of new ENM-like events have come out, but I don't know the items in them all yet.
Good to see we're on good terms, Changz!

Dual SotR <3 I hit 1900 in week 1 of S6 XD
When arcamages, rogues and dk's died uncontested, it means we were too OP.

Hmm, did not see a mention of the coffer nerf. Probably wasn't a big issue either way if picking locks was a valid source of income anymore. Unless you have the quest related to a coffer, it can only be opened every 15minutes to an hour by anyone. It despawns otherwise and repops in 5min, but it won't steal your tools or coffer key.
There is also a bastok quest for a skeleton key dispenser that can be done once per conquest week (Bait and Switch).

Also, any tips on where to farm now would be useful. Going to finally uncurse my heca cap/feet, I don't think I'll be going for +1's this time around, heh. I've been left pretty bare since I gave away gil when I quit and a friend re-activated my account to steal stuff and has since sold half of it and doesn't feel the need to send me gil in compensation (when he's quitting after this month...) I'm also pretty sure my old farming spot, Castle Zvahl, is probably worse than before I quit, since it was getting weaker and RMT farmed around the time I quit.
