Bard, love it hate it?

Since Bard forums are so... dead, I thought it would be a good idea to share what do you love (if you do) or hate (if you do) from Bard. Recurring cliches like "my mages run away from ballad" are valid.

I'll throw the first stone;

Loves:
  • Pulling non-stop in merit PTs
  • Lowmanning things in sea/Aern burns
  • Being in Tank PT

Hates:
  • After hours of meriting I get really pissed off and just end it abruptly. No "next chain" or whatever, I'm in a really bad mood when it ends!
  • Melees that demand specific songs (I'm looking at you Etudes) at any given time just to get some viagra boost.
  • When somebody openly whines for not having songs up when it's their own fault.
  • People who say "bounded". Irks me to death.
  • BLM PT in Dynamis. Ughhh.

Go ahead! I'm sure some people will disagree with some of my points, feel free to post yours!

I don't like playing BRD even though I have good gear and it shows in my focus/skills, which is a good thing since my LS leader noticed and doesn't make me come BRD unless we really have no one on.

Loves:
- Being able to sing songs in LS&PT-chat, everything from Don't stop Believin' to Dancing Queen
- Being highly thought for in merit pts
- Light-based lullaby

Hates:
- Being invited to PTs when not seeking
- Being invited to level sync PTs when not seeking
- Singing songs gets kind of tedious after a while, and being almost forced to come to BRD to all events... is just bleh...

Why on earth would you like Black Mage parties? Sitting around casting Ballad until you fall asleep is hardly what I'd call a bonus.

The feeling will vary from person to person. Some people enjoy the fast exp gain with little responsibility at all. I love playing all apects of Bard. I actually got flamed because I said I enjoyed playing Bard. The old saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" comes to mind.

Likes:
- Fastest invites of any job i've ever played.
- Always a spot open for me at every event.
- Doesn't require great gear to be useful, but it does help.
- Bard relic (Gjallarhorn) is a double-whammy. Not only does it buff up all songs but eliminates excess inventory space.
- Unless you're just not singing songs, nobody ever blames you for anything.

I'm not talking about meriting in them, i'm talking about during events.

So am I. Black Mage parties for meriting are great, but non-existent. I really hate meriting. Playing Ballad-bitch at an event, though, makes me never want to show up.

I like being able to ballad, then either AFK for 1min30sec or spam cure3 on the BLMs trying to proc sorc ring, or have time to cure other alliance members.

Having to do only 1 set of songs gives me more time to focus on other things, like support (As it is, I'm a heavy support bard, I pretty much need refresh and ballads on fulltime to satisfy my MP needs)

Yeah, no, I prefer to have responsibility than boredom. If I want to play a healer, I've got White Mage available. I've done the "heavy support" thing and it isn't that heavy. About half the time, I was over-healing, anyhow.

The only reason I ever got really irritated about cycling Bards in Einherjar was that party leaders were shockingly incompetent about getting invites done in a timely fashion. I know part of it is simply the spam (put up filters, idiots), but running around making sure three groups got their songs while keeping myself and, if I had a moment, others alive was far more interesting than being Alt+Tab'd playing Peggle while the Black Mages piddle around in Dynamis. Come to that, that's why my Dynamis leader always put me in the groups with the relic DDs, since they could rely on me to keep on top of songs and healing and leave the mindless stuff to the mindless players.

Call me cheesy, but I like the aspect of competently helping others out and seeing others benefit as a result; not because it gets me good seats in end-game linkshells (which I'm sure it would, if I ever had the time to be in any). I like being able to make a visible difference in the party mechanics. (My other main is White Mage, if you couldn't tell.) And as a result of my playing, if I do my job well, we get metric shittons of exp. Also, seeing Dragoons and Dark Knights jizz in their respective pants with Soul Voice and double Minuet, and Ninjas and Thieves doing the same when they get haste spell + Soul Voiced double march is quite enjoyable as well.

To make it into a list:

Likes:
- Competently and visibly helping others out
- Numbers (EXP and damage)
- Invites out the yinyang
- Always doing something - never stopping
- Movement Speed +25%

Dislikes:
- Alt-2. Run back. Ctrl-1. Run out. Alt-2. Run back. Ctrl-2. Run out. Alt-2. Run back. Ctrl-3. Run out. Alt-2. Run back. Ctrl-4. Run out. Alt-2. Run back. Ctrl-1. Run out. Alt-2. Et cetera...
- The inability of American players to read English. If I say I don't want to do Level Sync in my search comment, it means I DON'T WANT TO DO LEVEL SYNC gawd.
- Dehumanizing. I'm not "The Bard," I'm Terranova, and I will type in my very loud capital letters until you get it.

Like:
- Choosing the rhythm of the party (yes, it's a pun, but I really love to decide how fast others have to play).
- Extremely efficient job to lead anything, all the good tools.
- Hyperactive job, having to be present on many many fronts (pulling, buffing, backup-healing).
- A totally numberless job. Nothing brd does is shown through a number: it's original and delicious.
- The ability to be useful in every party setup or any situation.
- The 2Hour is really cool.

Dislike:
- Events that doesn't require me to be hyperactive.
- People... I really dislike people, they keep running out of song range when the song is about to land.
- Ballad not lasting as much as other songs (why for god's sake... why ???)
- Lullaby being only light based. It would be really good to have a backup tool for when lullaby can't land (maybe a dark based Bind spell single/AOE, that would be really cool)
- Requiem, why can't you land on anything worthwhile ?

Your Likes/Dislikes were so similar to mine that I felt inspired to post and add a few personal edits lol :)

In addition to your Likes, here are a few of my own...

Likes:
-Soloing mobs on Brd that aren't meant to be solod by a Brd lol (Mostly as Brd/whm using a huge Phy. Def-% Build/Spirit Taker/Paeonx2/Etc)
-Trying to DD as Brd... :P
-When you would perfectly manage to cast Ballad on your Mages and Pld, while keeping DD songs up Pre-Pianissimo (This "Like" is pretty damn Old-School...)
-MAZURKA

I totally agree with you on Requiem... I cherished those moments when Requiem actually would land on something worth a damn (AKA: Salvage Mega Bosses)

I totally did the bolded part in my last party. It was epic, until we got a THF, and he whined when he got a ballad while trick attacking. :(
