I dont intend to ever play ranger, however. I was wondering why rangers dont use thunder staff for ranged attacking, does it only affect the staff itself? it was just an idea i had, and im relatively buzzed.

if it only affects the staff, understood. i believe dual wielding works the same way.

I'm pretty sure it's only for the weapon it's on, and even if it did effect ranged attacks, ranged criticals suck compared to melee criticals. It 'might' be useful for certain situations if it did work, but for the most part trying to gear for crit+ on Rng is pretty pointless.

Here's the way critical hit rate items work:

If it says "Critical Hit Rate +X%" AND it is a weapon, that enhancement only applies to the weapon itself. The only thing I know of that gives a percentage description that is not on a weapon are the ACP rewards.

If it says "Enhances Critical Hit Rate," that applies to all weapons.

As such, Thunder Staff only affects itself. Moreover, as Jiyo said, critical hits from ranged attacks are not a big deal. They add a little extra damage, but it's a flat 1.25x multiplier to pDIF instead of a +1.0 pDIF bonus.
