Having spirits is essential in a summoners arsenal, at very least one spirit. When you get into a tight spot with aggro with no avatar out having that near instant cast spirit will save your ass especially if you get multiple aggro from say a linking mob. You can let your ele auto attack the first mob and then tell your spirit to go after the second while you run like hell

..cept for when you need a quick casting get away...at which point atleast one spirit should be in your arsenal

actually it uses more mp lol, but it mostly just for emergencies though you do make a valid point you can summon those spirits faster then avatars so i guess you could use them to raise your smn skill

Using Bloodpacts raises your skill faster and that's something you can't do with spirits. Unless their spells somehow give you skillups too.
