Ok, reading all arguments and putting that aside for now, it looks impressive for an early alpha version. The first video had a bit of collision issues and the Elvaan and Hume had similar animations to FFXI; that is until I saw the other videos.
In the end, I will probably wait for open beta and final release to make my final opinion about the MMO. Yes, it does look similar to WoW in some respects, but remember that in the past few years, FFXI players have been clamoring for casual play in FFXI. Look at what we got in the end for FFXI:
- Reduced XP needed to get from 1 to 75 - Instead of taking longer to get to 75
- Fields of Valor - Instead of spending hours seeking in a party, we can do FoV quests for spurts of XP
- ZNM - Instead of camping HNMs or NMs, we can get pretty decent gear from here
- Watchful Pixie quest - Instead of camping HNMs/NMs for weapons, we can get unique and in most ways decent weapons
- Campaign battles - Instead of being cockblocked by a merit burn party because your job isn't meant for meriting; or have no time to merit; then do Campaign
And, it looks like FFXIV will carry similar ideas over,
yet we're complaining it's similar to WoW because of its casual gameplay??? We should be the ones to blame because
we asked for it. If you don't like it, then don't play it-- simply put. And, in large part, a lot of WoW-mentality (and complaining) from a lot of the FFXI community been directed towards SE why so-and-so is difficult or why so-and-so takes too long to get X-item or get from point A to point B. FFXIV is the end result of what SE took as quote-and-quote "suggestions" and "complaints" on their PlayOnline.com website, at Fan Festivals, and game conferences/trade shows.
The general and majority attitude of players in FFXI want things easier and be given to them on a silver platter, so to speak. It's why we have botters and RMT still prevalent in this game after six or seven years. We'd rather take the easy way out instead of the hard way, and if things don't go our way, we complain. And, that's how it's been for FFXI for the better part of its existence. Just read KillingIfrit each day, or BlueGartr forums, or Allakhazam, and so forth and so on. You can get a general feel of what players been wanting in FFXI but SE didn't give it to us.
If you thought Square-Enix wasn't listening, well apparently they were. They took what made FFXI great (storyline and community) and what made WoW great (casual gameplay) and made FFXIV. They listened to what we wanted in FFXI but they failed to deliver on it, so they (will most likely) put in FFXIV in one way or another.
So why are we complaining?
Because it isn't unique?
Because it's too much of a WoW clone yet we only have snippets of videos of it to make a final conclusion based on an alpha version?
It does sound in a way disappointing if you base your judgment on short video clips alone without having played the game at all.
We'll eventually complain about FFXIV issues after release anyhow, so the cycle will continue.
I think the best response to all this is: "You get what you pay for."
You wanted casual play, there you have it-- FFXIV Online.
I mean, given everyone's complaints, a better title would be:
"FFXI version 2-EQ derivative-WoW derivative-FFXII online-SE can't seem to satisfy FFXI players yet they complain to us so often" Online
