There were many Summons in FFXI, but for an online world, I never felt there were enough. What Summons can we expect to see in FFXIV and will there be more variety than in FFXI?
We can't really mention which summons will be in. But what we can say is that some is going to be really important in the storyline. It's not going to be included in the game like FFXI. At the moment we don't really have a class, a pet class / summoner. Not at the moment at least. So it will be implemented in the game in a different way. Please check back with us in the future.
Mmmmm.... what?????
SMN in FFXIV? "we don't really have a class, a pet class / summoner"

Keep in mind it took 1 expansion for SMN to come out in FFXI. But that's still pretty lame.

Did you say Summons in FFXIV?
Well, how about this:

I'm going to call that Ifrit for now until more information confirms it.
It's from here:

Dengeki labels it Ogre.
Summons will be part of the story again (they almost always have. have been prominent elements in FF6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12)
but summoners and other pet-based classes will have to wait, since they've yet to fine tune the most basic of class aspects in XIV yet.
furthermore, a pet-based class would have to be built on top of the existing 4-class structure somehow, which would be rather hard to balance out, i think.. because technically, weapons are indeterminant of what pets can do.
like mightyg said, XI took 1 expansion before it could iron out Summoner, altho it did have Beastmaster already at the time (which was impossibly overpowered), SMN ran into a whole lot of balancing issues from the day it was released.
I trust SE has more experience now with XIV to be able to implement classes that are balanced enough to work properly, but pet-based classes are tricky to balance in itself, so we should give them time to work at it.
after all, XIV is only 40%+ complete.

The interview is a bit weird actually. I guess the translation is a bit off because a few things don't make sense.
First they say that summons will be implemented in a different way and then that SMN has not been developed, yet.
I just hope they hurry with the beta lol, I wanna try and play this even if it's not complete.

Yup. No smn class. But there will be something comparable i bet. And that Pic is a beastmen of some sorts i think. (or some kind of enemy.)

I'm going to agree and say there's a very slim chance it would be introduced to start. It will probably begin with the most basic of classes -- they need to leave some room for expansion... plus, the whole, 'keeping fans on the edge of their seats waiting for more' tactic is how MMO's make money... so...

Wonder if they will make it like ff12 where everyone can summon if they are given it.

That would be a bad idea imo. There's already too much going on with 3 gauges to check all the time lol.. imagine if they have to implement a summon system too.
Considering the game is only 40-50% done I still think there's a chance to see something like pup or smn in the final product.

There will be 2 avatars in 14.
Two large avatars.
That we will be asking how to use them.
Sad part....I'm joking but at this rate with SE.....

I don't think it would be a bad idea for everyone to be able to summon. It'd basically be like the magicite system in FF6.

If everyone can summon they'll be either super gimp or barely useful. I'd rather have a class that can summon so they can make them somewhat more useful.

The way it seems to me is there are no classes, and its going to play almost like; your going to be able to equip item based on the "Discipline" you set to (hand, land, war, magic). then the skills and ability will be tied to the equipment you have on.
so im saying there will be NO SMN CLASS but if we luck you might be able to get smn spells for the Discipline of magic ie a callers horn or levi staff
you might need to kill some what ever they call NMs to get it maybe kill

to get a levi item that might just so a 1 shot magic and it not really a pet system at all

by merely equipping any of a variety of weapons or tools, players can instantly change their active skills. thus enabling them to dramatically alter their style of play as well as there character's outward appearance

That soldier is from FFXIII anyway, nothing to do with XIV.
