This video has stirred a lot of controversy in the states for how graphic it is, but is it really needed to get the point across? Discuss.

People who split their attention from driving deserve everything they get. Including being shown how fucking stupid it is in technicolor, full blood detail, on the television.
This whole concern about 'graphic' shit can be brought to bear on the idiots who go and splatter themselves in reality, since they're not doing anyone any good. At least this commercial is trying to accomplish something other than send 'Im an rtard driver lol'
edit: Having watched it full through, I like it even more. A very nice, complete image of hammering home that one is not alone on the road, and that their stupidity burdens everyone else. Were this real, I'd wish that girl a long, therapy-free lifetime of guilt and sleeplessness.

The only real criticism I have for this ad isn't directed at how graphic it is, but rather how melodramatic it is. The whole "mummy daddy wake up" thing kind of detracted from its believability and impact. Without that particular eye-roll inducing cliché included it would have been a harrowing and powerful piece of work, but with it included I just couldn't take it seriously.
But yeah, it shouldn't be removed from the air because of how graphic it is. Exceptions to laws on what can and can't be shown pre-watershed should apply to things of this nature.

My parents got into a car accident 2 weeks ago. They just got off the freeway and were on an off-ramp stopped at a red light. Later a young female driver has gotten off the freeway as well, but at a high rate of speed. She ended up rear-ending my parent's sedan. She never slowed down at all nor was she paying attention. Why? She was texting on her cellphone. If her vehicle was an SUV, she would have pushed my parent's vehicle into oncoming traffic at the speed she was going and do something much worse.
Oh, another thing, she doesn't have car insurance. Instead of going to court and having to pay my parents for damages to the vehicle, she decided to go to jail. If you recall, California punishes drivers without car insurance, and she's getting additional sentence for texting while driving, which was made illegal a few months ago. Our car insurance is only willing to pay up to $1600 USD for repairs, which only covers half of what's estimated to fix the rear end.
I've seen that video above about the dangers of texting two weeks ago, and was aired on ABC News two days ago. As graphic as it is, I do agree that something has to be done about this. Reading MSNBC.com yesterday, only 10 states have legislation against texting while driving, and Congress is considering something on a more national level that'll apply to every state.
Too many people have died or were injured from texting-related accidents while driving. This video definitely needed to be made. They should air it in the US as well, regardless what audience. Air it when teenagers are watching TV. Let them sit it with their eyelids propped open with Scotch tape; or let them go see the gravesite of some dead teenager who died while texting while driving. Let them face reality and get it through their thick-headed, irresponsible skulls that this is WHAT YOU SHOULDN'T DO while driving and pay some goddamn attention!
It's not only teenagers, but even adults, young and old. Whoever texts while driving or even talk on a cellphone needs to have their driver's license revoked for a very long time. I've gotten into more close calls on the freeways and on open streets with drivers using cellphones than drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

I think this sort of approach is really needed, but this could have really done without the child telling his parents to wake up (just crying would make it much more harrowing) and without the man calling for the ambulance, bad, bad acting by that man.

I'm shocked texting while driving is a huge problem, i thought it was a running joke to mock people that call while driving. I did not think people where that stupid. I would call this darisum and close it as that but the problem is these people don't hurt them selfs and often hurt others more then them self.
just like drinking it would be nice to punish the people that do the act, the reality is that these people usually hurt others more then them selfs. I hear and seen lots of stories where drunk drivers get others in accidents and kill others while the drink driver is the only survivor.
This vid is a bit graphic for me and i would ask them to mellow it a bit while still keeping the message. people that do this shit texting or drink and driving need to see this ( I do call on the road sometimes but only if i absualty must) if i can play 3 games at once surf the web and watch T.V i think i could handle a bit of multitasking as long as the other tasks does not turn my eyes off the road.
Even though I mutli task well i would never text while driving and try not to talk and drive. I can not bare of hurting someone else in any shape or forum.

It's far more horrific that people need educational commercials like this in the first place.

I don't really see the need for it to be mellowed out, it's an accurate representation of what can happen if you stop paying attention to the road in order to send a text. The fact that it's accurate makes it okay, in my opinion. Now, if they'd made an ad in which a giant octopus descended from the sky in order to viscously rape someone while screeching "DO NOT TEXT WHILE DRIVING", that'd be different, because it isn't likely to be a result of texting while driving. Unless you're in Japan.

Although I agree that this is retch-inducing in its level of meaninglessness, I actually see a point to it. If the blood and gore don't grab your attention, which is not an unreasonable assumption among the mindless hordes who just have to LOL at whatever the hell Julie just texted instead of running the fry machine over at McDonald's, then something that offends their vapid little aesthetics might. The point is to get it to stick in your head and, like it or loathe it, we're programmed to take a certain amount of notice from children.
Personally, I think texting should be outlawed. "The Boondocks" cartoon did a bit that pretty much captures my opinion of someone typing with their thumbs into a TELEPHONE (warning: frequent use of a racial epithet):

I'd also add Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace to the list of Nga-Technology. I hope there is going to be Season 3 of Boondocks soon ; ; . I've watched the reruns like three times back to back now.

some people can't sand the sight of stuff like that is what i meant, i had trouble watching it, only reason i did was to have better background in this chat, if i seen that on T.V i would change the channel right away or turn away.
and before you ask yes i hate most scary movies because of stuff like that.
and no i am not scared of blood, i have no issue with that i just cant watch stuff like that vid shown.

I love this PSA, two snaps up in Z formation!
lololol great episode. he makes a good point tho, bitches DO love texting/smileys. one asked me recently "you're good at computers right? I have the BEST idea.. can you make a program that converts speech to text so I can text while driving? everyone will want it, we'll be rich!!"
she was cute too, so just adorably painful to watch the gears turning when I suggested she, you know, skip the speech conversion and just fucking call the person.

can you toss your elitism to the side for a sec? if you make it more graphic then that or even keep it like that some people will not even watch it, is it THAT hard to change the channel when you see something you dont like? i would prob do that after seeing something like that.

You just don't understand her genius. If you monopolize the market with a program that also turns text into speech, you could be twice as rich.

So not only are you an illiterate retard, you're also a pussy? That film was hardly graphic compared to films like Saw, only a pathetic little bitch would whine about that minute a level of gore. Hell, after a statement like that I'd bet you sit down to pee.

Texting has it's place, it's pretty well the same as IMs - they're for casual conversations that are had at the leisure of those involved. Sometimes both parties are doing something that prevents them for actually talking on the phone, and being able to text allows them to yet communicate. Maybe you're at the theater, in the middle of the movie, and you need to find out where someone is whom you need to pick up later on in the evening - you can't exactly call them and shout over the film, now can you? So you shoot them a text. While I would never send a message of serious length or importance by such means as texting or IMing if I had another option, short, concise, and discreet communications have there purpose in my life.
