What I don't understand is why they didn't at least cast Robert as Freddy Kruege

He's said that he wanted no part of it but isn't against the making of it.

I just saw this movie tonight and it was really good in my opinion. Don't go into it thinking it's an exact remake of the original, but if you've seen the Friday the 13th remake, it follows along those lines. It's a new twist on an old story. I really enjoyed it, and figured I'd post here for anyone interested since there was a thread already started about it.

God Damn it........why do they let Michael Bay make movies? He turned Transformers into a nice steaming pile of shit and now they've given him this to destroy.........

at least it was a good call to cast Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy and not let Bay cast that little fuck-twat Shia LaDouche.

Yeah, I was not entirely pleased with the turnout of the Transformers movies for a number of reasons.. Including the animated mouths (minor detail, but I preferred them shielded over human-esque) as well as their bodies looking too wirey, leaving no distinction between bots. I just grew up on the cartoon and the transition could've been made better. I feel like all that was done just to make the movie look fancy and expensive rather than true to the original cartoon.

Though Shia isn't really that bad, I still think the casting could have been better. I'm probably one of the few guys who don't nut themselves over Megan Fox, either. Personally I would've liked to see someone like Amber Heard or Olivia Munn... But yeah, Michael Bay + Elm street sounds like /facepalm... I'll give him the benefit of the doubt with this one, though. The trailer didn't look too bad.

Like I said, if you go into it thinking it's a remake, you're going to be disappointed. Kris, the girl at the beginning is homage to Tina from the original and plays a much bigger part. Nancy is weaksauce in this one and she's not really the driving character of the movie. It's got tie ins with the original, but it doesn't follow the story closely at all... since it's not a remake, it's a re-imagining. The only thing I didn't like was Freddy's backstory, but I can see how it got changed, probably for more of a shock factor, although I'm not sure if killing children in the original wasn't bold enough as it was.

Saw the movie yesterday, as a NOES fan I loved it.

To begin with, I was against the remake from the start, especially after Platinum Dunes' horrible remake of Friday The 13th. I don't know how but they surprised me this time around. Freddy in the past (I'm just counting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 'A New Nightmare' movies) has always had has motives, namely revenge and murder. In the remake its still the same but they knock it up a notch by actually giving a personal connection with Freddy and the teens he's murdering.

In the original NOES Freddy was hellbent on killing all the kids in Springwood because of the parent's retaliation to him as a child murderer getting off on a technicality. They hunted him down and killed him. However, in the remake Freddy's creepy factor goes up tenfold because he could care less about the parents and is more concerned with his personal relationship with the children he knew before he was murdered. I thought the movie was more about Freddy's backstory and character more than any of the teens; at first I didn't like it but it grew on me, especially at the third act.

I'll explain what I mean:

***SPOILERS***

Highlight

The movie starts by making you think that Freddy is just killing to kill, then you realize he's doing it for revenge... then the big reason behind his motive is realized and thats when this Freddy just becomes sickening.

They finally succeeded in making a horror icon, in my opinion, truly insane by hinting at his madness. This Freddy is a child molester, he has an unhealthy obsession with these select children. He loves them but in the sickest, most deranged way possible. As said in the movie, he isn't killing the teens because they "lied" and he died because of it. He's killing them because he told the secret. Psychologically, Freddy feels that what he was doing was perfectly normal. His rage forms from the kids breaking his "trust" and betraying him. I know its sounds sick and really weird but this Freddy really becomes a monster... more than just a visual monster but a psychological one too.

In their desperation, the parents killed Freddy and possibly got some professional help to block out those memories from the kids. Freddy has always fed on fear and he needed those memories and the fear that attached themselves to them to manifest himself in their dreams.

***SPOILERS END***

All in all, I think they did justice to the character and the series. I wish there was more character development though, the original NOES gave you some time to understand what these characters were going through; this one sets it up and just kills them off. This version of Nancy was horrible, always brooding and overly too dull. I wish they swapped actresses making Nancy Kris and vice versa.

Oh and for when and if they do a sequel... NO MORE CG FREDDY PARTS... the wall Freddy remake thing was horrible, looked like the Mummy.

I feel the same about Nancy. I wish the character of Kris was who Nancy portrayed instead of Nancy being a little emo teenager who kind of just tags along with Quentin. I do love how Kris' death scene was identical to the original Tina's. I guess they probably chose her name since Kris and Tina are both nicknames for Christina/Kristina. I think overall, her acting was far superior to Nancy's, although that probably had a lot more to do with the fact that she was given a better role in the first place. Kris looked like she could kick ass, and that is what the original Nancy did. Nancy in this version looks more like the original Tina, in the fact that she would pee her pants if she saw Freddy. However, I did love the scene where they find out they could pull things out of their dream, I thought it was a lot more dramatic and it was amazing how the dream/awake transitions were back to back.

Some parts of the movie just felt forced, like Freddy's showing up for no real apparent reason other than a cheap scare out of the audience, and the first movie didn't really cash in on random cheap scares by blaring noises out of the blue. But overall, I thought it was a perfect horror movie, and it has succeeded in upping NOES from a sub-par B rated movie to a top notch (as top notch as this genre can be) horror flick. Like you said though, please take out the crappy CG like the wall scene, the original did a better job with actually using a real person pushing against nylon or whatever it was that they used to create it, I can't remember now.
