I finally bought this in December and stumbled back into this thread. I'm on my 3rd playthrough. The game is much easier than what most people think but it is fun. Just got all the unique weapons and working on rings and spells. Still having trouble getting the stones for the upgrades...

Only thing that sucked was 2FPSTown. Well that and the level 1 immortal "Well, what is it?" faggots.

Just wanted to come back and touch on Demon's Souls one last time. I can honestly say, looking back, that this was truly one of the greatest video games I have ever played. The atmosphere, multiplayer/online integration, controls, gameplay, and the subtle, piece it together, puzzle of a story were absolutely superb. I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

Things like the completely optional dialogue from the Crestfallen Warrior in the Nexus who succumbs to his own apathy, slowly losing his mind and memory, and all the while criticizing you, the player, for your ravenous appetite for demon's souls. The Crestfallen Warrior claims you are falling for the same trap as King Allant and when you collect enough souls he will simply disappear, leaving naught but a single soul where he has been for the entire game:

Quote

Well, you’ve found yourself a Demon’s Soul, have you?
I’m impressed…yes, indeed I am.
Stay the path, and you will soon be a monster yourself!
Hahahahahah!
Can’t you see you’ve fallen for their trap?

As he deteriorates:
You… have you seen my corporeal flesh? Has my body gone rotten?
I’m sorry… please leave me alone.
…Argh… who are you? I don’t remember anything…

To of course probably the most incredible back story for a boss battle ever! Maiden Astrea.. the most pure hearted maiden in the country, if not the entire fictional world. Ironic then, that her soul is the most impure of all. It is said, from piecing together optional information from the game that Maiden Astrea discovered the truth about God's existence - or lack thereof - and because of her compassion accepted the soul of a demon so that she may ease the pain of those suffering. Referred to as "Pureblood Demon's Soul", Maiden Astrea awaits the player in the last area of the Valley of Defilement in an atmosphere of decrepitude, decay and disease, and constant rain. Surrounding her are children, the results of abortions, that devour any player unfortunate to fall off the path. Yet still, her knight, her single knight, Garl Vinland would not leave her side and blocks your way.

Quote

Astrea upon entering her domain:
Leave us, slayer of Demons.
This is a sanctuary for the lost and wretched.
There is nothing here for you to pillage or plunder.
Please, leave quietly.

Astrea if attacked:
This is our home.
We have done no harm to you.
Dear God, have mercy.
Is not your abandonment of us punishment enough?
How long must we weather this cruel fate?
Cruel Lord… What more can you possibly take from us?
Dear Lord… You are too cruel.
You have abandoned us, is that not punishment enough?

Garl Vinland if attacked:
You will not turn back, will you?
I shall let no harm come to dearest Astraea.
May you rot in the deepest depths of this swamp.
How dare you persist in intruding upon our haven.
You abandoned us long ago; what right do you have?
We live humble lives. Leave us be!

Astrea if Garl Vinland is killed:
You…
You killed him, didn't you?
Very Well, I can no longer resist you.
Do as you like. Take your precious Demon soul.

These, with the other clues too many to cover, would now be starting to creep into the back of your mind as the final battle looms. Are YOU, the player, any different then the rest? You are blood thirsty, you'll do whatever it takes to quench your thirst for souls and you start to realize you're just like King Allant the fool who caused this to happen. Maiden Astrea does not even fight back, she only wished to ease the suffering of those that the God she worshiped and dedicated her life to ignored and had forsaken. The best part about this? It's all completely optional backstory. You could trudge through swinging your sword or spamming fire and never be the wiser, the game allows you to piece it together yourself or completely ignore it.
