What WERE the reasons you quit, Rocky?
Well I left the first time because I couldn't play at the time, didn't have no internet and moved to a place where I couldn't get it for a while. Played WoW in the meantime at a friend's house since playing FFXI there wasn't realistic. Then when I had the chance to play FFXI again in the comfort of my home I came to realize that I just moved past it. Nothing against FFXI in general, just that compared to WoW it felt like I was going back to the N64 after playing 360 all day. The battle system, the PvP, the endgame, etc. Everything felt inferior to WoW by comparison.
When I was waiting in line for Ballista to start and saw only like, 7 people show up I knew what little PvP this game had was dead. When I was in a merit party only pressing L1 and then X to hit my weapon skill every so often I was reminded of active Warrior was in WoW with the strafing, kiting and tons of staple abilities like Mortal Strike, Rend, Overpower, etc. And when I stood in Dragon's Aery for like 2 and a half hours doing jack shit the whole time only to get Fafnir, see no drop and expect this as the norm I could only think that this was an elaborate prank by the developers. I mean they made a game based on standing in one spot for 3hrs.
AND PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO IT. And then there was Dynamis.
Ohhh man Dynamis. Dynamis is the reason why I can't enjoy raiding in WoW, it just brings back too many repressed memories of those San d'Oria and Xarcabard farms. I just can't stay in one spot for too long knowing full well I can't leave until it's over. In WoW despite PvE being lol, you actively fight and have many boss encounters each dropping something good(long as it's current). In FFXI you have a fu
ckton of loot pinatas that you hit and hope they drop something relevant to the people actually there. There's bosses there yes but they're as much a joke as the swarms of mobs is. You wouldn't even know they were bosses unless you looked at the guy's name. The final straw was when I just decided to wander the world and went to Cape Terrigan. I saw a rabbit and decided to hit it with a Mighty Strike weapon skill to see how hard I can hit it. The rabbit kicked my ass, I barely won with like 300 or 700 HP and had to sit and heal for like a couple minutes. In WoW I used to kill rabbits as I traveled somewhere just because they were there. That's when I was like man, fu
ck this and reactivated.
I love FFXI to death but I also loved Goldeneye. I went to play Goldeneye recently and after playing Halo 3 I just couldn't get past the old style of playing. All those memories of chilling in my room with like 6-7 friends rotating the controller, squinting at my little corner on my fatback TV were shattered when nostalgia was peeled away and I had to face the facts that I'm playing an outdated game. Doesn't mean that it's a bad game though, just means that it's old and I moved on. Some games though are timeless. I still play Sonic 2-4(I don't care what they say, S&K was StH4) to this day aswell as Street Fighter III and a few other choice games. Final Fantasy XI is not one of those games.
So lemme reiterate, I still got love for FFXI; hell I actively defend it when people bad mouth it on the WoW forums but I just don't see myself playing it again. It's not even that I have too much invested in WoW, it's just that I find WoW a ton more enjoyable. Mainly in the PvP department. PvP as in battlegrounds and what not though, I don't really enjoy arena all that much even though I do know my way around a pillar or two. ;
