Why do people think that crafters will be in battle at all? Read the story: Warrior goes into battle, after the party disbands he changes his weapon and fishes, after that he goes back to town and does blacksmithing. Never does it say he whacks a goblin with his fishing pole or hits an orc with his smithing hammer. Separate professions are separate!
Edit: I agree that buffing jobs will be lumped in with the mage jobs when they are announced.
Crafters in Combat what do you think they'd do?

So like... what they do is make little gadgets, potions, muffins, sharp bone things, or peices of cloth... depending on the type of crafter... and they throw these items at the baddies... i heard blueberry muffins give the DEF down effect on antelopes..... cause antelopes REALLY like blueberry muffins...
logically, the blueberry muffin would give the antelope evasion down, because it would stop and stand there to eat the muffin, instead of trying to avoid you lol

Botanist in a party:
Problem: Mob is hitting too hard.
Solution: Harvest some fungus to numb and dull the pain. Recieve only 50% damage for a short time.
Problem: Current zone is infested with crabs and everyone wants to move, despite the XP is awesome.
Solution: Harvest some shrooms and give to party. Those crabs become amazingly rainbow colored, trippy, and awesome. Party remains in the zone. +50% EXP.
Cook in a party:
Problem: Mob is too accurate for his own good, he is also the great great grandson of Gobbie McCritsalot.
Solution: Grind up some pepper and spray him in the face. Mob accuracy is -50% for a duration.
Problem: Loudmouth Lalafell is trying to bring his elitist attitude over from FFXI.
Solution: Cook up a Mithkabob and shove it down his shirt and watch Steelfleece rape him. Yes, he eats meat.
Fisher in a party:
Problem: Quest mob will only spawn when a crab is attacking a fresh pull of a particular fished meal.
Solution: Fisher does not want to lose his 10,000+ gil item for the auction house, so he proceeds to beat the crab and quest mob down with his unbreakable Lu Shangs. +1 Quest complete.
Problem: Mi'qote doesn't like you. At all.
Solution: Tie a mithkabob on a line and fish the Mi'qote out of the crowd. Use the excess line to tie her up and then proceed with "consensual" sex in the missionary position. +50% EXP for 30 minutes. +1 Kitten at a 5% probability
Miner in a party:
Problem: Phase 2 of that ground king released in the new patch is an underground fight.
Solution: Miner digs into the ground and places dynamite, dealing damage and forces the boss back to the surface. +0 loot because no bosses drop anything. Ever. ;_;
Problem: Phase 2 of a boss in the mines disables the light making it almost pitch black.
Solution: There is no solution. The miner left his hat in storage. Rape the mi'qote and then warp out.
Honestly, I can dream, but boy that'd be nice.
