I've been playing for over 4 years to FFXI, and as you might imagin i've always had the same problem with the parties as many of you; the problem is called JP ONLY. i think its stupid to say that they cant make parties with the non japanese ppl cause they cant speak english, thats what the auto-tanslator function was created for, to allow ppl with different languages to understand each other. well its really annoying when you log into the game, ready for leveling your job and you see a a lot of comments on the ppl saying "english, i dont understand" "JP ONLY", thats when you realize that from out of 20 ppl looking for party 16 are JP and all the tanks are taken cause they r japanese too, so u start feeling really angry cause you logged in for nothing but for getting pissed by all the JP ppl who are here ignoring everyone else. i think its a behaviour that should not be permited in this game, where you are supposed to meet new ppl and enjoy adventures together, with ppl from different countries, after all im not english, and ive never said "SPANISH ONLY". in my opinion all these guys who act in this stupid and recist way should learn a lesson, maybe the american best LSs of each server should not allow them to join them, or maybe everyone should lv brd to 75 and say "JP, NO THANKS".
So guys i would like to listen to your opinions about this subject, cause its something which has been affecting us since this game begun.

its not racism.. its 80% about ease of communication 20% xenopoby. its hard to cobble together even basic ideas and statements with the auto translator. this is the one thing that both sides of the community can agree on
i hope it comes to no surprise to you that English and Japanese are very different languages. something that you think conveys a direct and concise statement on your end could very well end up as total jabber on the other.

remember. we are the gaijin here, this is a japanese game. it never hurts to learn a little bit of conversational Japanese.

You did not just say the auto translator was a viable way to talk to other people.....

F that. This game has been out way too long to use this shit as an excuse anymore. I don't have problems getting into JP parties and JPs don't have problems getting into my parties. It's people like this that learn to accept their behaviour and in some ways accomodate their bullshit that perpetuates all this JP ONRY nonsense. Seriously, it all boils down to whether they wanna put up with your job or not. They are racist. They'll invite all the bards and corsairs that are english speakers and will deal with the difficulty of communicating with said players. But hey, that's what I do. If I need a bard, I'm inviting it regardless of whether it speaks english or scribble-talk. I don't sit there and think of how hard it is to communicate in xp with a samurai JP. Cuz come on, seriously, they know wtf to do. Someone pulls, someone tanks, someone attacks, lather rinse repeat. {Pull back.} {Fisherman} {Front Line Job} {Back Line Job} {Bard} {Fisherman} {Yes, please.} Seriously, the auto-translate is SOOOOO difficult to use when trying to convey these complicated party mechanics.

idiot posts.... ^

This is a old game and this problem has been around forever. I thought everyone knew by now that JP are this way, or most of them that play. Fuck that shit that they are wanting to play with native speaker and its not racism, how is it almost every english speaking person I know does not mind at all to play with JP in exp parties(if they aren't gimp atleast, most JP are). Not like we both play worlds apart on the same jobs we do the same crap, bard pulls melee hit stuff etc. This isn't a JP game anymore, there are an equal amount of players on NA side too so it isn't just their game. Auto trans works fine imo. If anything playing this game has had me harbor some negative feelings towards JP after seeing how they are in this game. They are rude, constantly drop party with lame excuses like "Time for work!" and have no rep, they don't like to do anything with NA, the list goes on.

It's not just JPs that do. 've seen just as many non JP players pull the same bullshit with dropping pts with either with/out reason. Some are a benefit of a doubt, some don't; hell, even some going to the lengths of outright "dcing". Everyone has their own way of playing the game; some are picky as hell, some don't care. Doing JP/French/whatever being one of them. If you have that much of a problem with it, learn Japanese/whatever language you want to use to get an easier time in a pt or STFU.

As for JP being "racist & ignoring people", just about every country is going to have racist people in it.

Just my 2 cents on that.

PS- The day Auto translate ends up being able to cover /everything/ in terms of a pt/other issues is a day it'll be hailing in the New England area for a week straight. In the middle of summer....

ive never complained about how hard is to get a pt, actually i have always created my own partied, regardless the nationalities of my members, if they could not speak english i always used the auto translator to talk with them. the thing is that some JPs do not even bother doing that, they do not want to party with other ppl, they only want natives, JP ONLY, if thats not racism tell me what its called, they leave all the other ppl apart, and its rly bullshit.

Um auto trans can already cover everything JP need to know for a pt. You say where the camp is, where they are going and that is all they should already know how to play their jobs for the most part. Yes but I have never seen a serious non joke search comment that said "NA onry" like the JP do, I never see "EU only" ONLY THEM so tell me why is that? and no u stfu!

You know what I try to do when I get a jp person? I try to get a second or third jp person so they have someone to talk to, it helps out a lot. Also Pathwriter thanks for the link that was a really good read.

I wouldn't label the whole JP community racist. Some play with whoever and some don't. Just got to deal with it. tbh, i'd pick a English speaking player over a foreign player any time so does that make me racist too?

I'd be willing to bet the only real difference is that the JP players put their preferences in their search comments. I've landed in a few JP parties by accident before that I probably wouldn't have taken had I known ahead of time. It's rather frustrating to try to explain to your RDM that "Dia and Bio don't stack so would you please stop casting them one right after the other" using just the auto-translate.

Yes there is a communication barrier. Yes there is xenophobia. Yes there is racism. The whole country of japan is racist. Don't believe me? Go there and walk around for an hour, they really do feel something for foreigners, whether it's fear/hatred/curiosity, it's there. The one time I visited tokyo for a few weeks, I had a blast walking around and recognizing the racial slurs people were using in japanese behind my back directed at me.

Thats my point, its not just JP players that are racist, i bet everyone here once has gone, "Hmm foreign speaking PLD or same language PLD? I'l take the same language one". I'd say its more down to ease of play rather then a pure racist hate for anyone non-JP. Its far easier to have a full party who understand you then a mix match of different languages.

Bullshit. If your gonna start calling Japan out on being racist to foreigners then atleast include the rest of the world. Every country has a percentage that hates tourists. Theres always the stereotypical Japanese/Chinese tourist with the camera thats get ripped by everyone else.

Tourists? You can be born and raised in Japan, but if you retain a non-Japanese surname, you have to carry a gaijin ID card, you don't have many protected rights, and you're ostracized. For choosing to keep your family name. It's not just tourists; Japan is incredibly insular.

It's not difficult to translate a couple sentences into Japanese on BabelFish. For example;
"Good morning. Thank you for joining my group." is more or less "おはよう。 私のグループに加わるためにありがとう。"
"Thank you for letting me join your group" is more or less "グループに加わることを許可するを私をありがとう。"
Fortunately the Unofficial Windower allows copy & paste, so using this method isn't "impossible". Coupled with the auto-trans, this shows that you are at least making some effort. How many JPs do you know that have tried to learn some form of English? In my FFXI days, quite a few people on my friends list were JP, purely because I made some kind of an effort other than "{Please use the auto-translate function.}{I don't know any}{Japanese}" during parties, the same as they have done for me. Then again, you will always have the rude and xenophobic JPs, but at least you will have made an effort. Most JPs are incredibly proud of their etiquette and politeness, so don't write them all off as xenophobes.
