"Aurora Technology, a subsidiary of MMO giant Shanda that publishes many MMOs in China, including AION, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Company of Heroes Online, started requiring players of their MMO King of the World, to start proving their gender via webcam. "
Because men impersonating women or playing as female characters in an online game is serious business.

So, you need to pull your pants down for the webcam? I sense something suspicious.

You know, I keep trying as hard as I can to respect China as a developing super power of a nation, but what the fuck...
They have the largest amount of people out of any country by far, and they constantly pull the dumbest ideas out of nowhere. What could possibly be their justification for this? Completely retarded, in my opinion.

You must not be taller than 4' to select Tarutaru.
You must have a tail to select Mithra.
You must be at least 200lbs to select Galka.

They can't get civil and workers' rights correct, but thank god they'll keep men from pretending to be women online. In a fucking video game. You know what? I'm glad we're sending all of our mercury infected refuse over there.

China has a big issue with homosexuality ans transsexuals, both post and pre op. Honestly they probably see this as a way of weeding fags out of their MMOs.

Have you guys missed the story about the hotel manager in a heavily Spanish-speaking town who is trying to force his Hispanic employees to anglicize their names? Do you think that's a good indicator of how Americans respond to Hispanics and other recent immigrants or do you see that as an example of a lone nut in a crazy world? If the Chinese government was mandating gender testing before extending some service, then I'd care. This is an MMO company and, therefore, a totally optional problem on the part of any given consumer. It's absurd, but I guess I just don't care and I certainly don't see it as typical Chinese behavior.

I'm betting no one even notices. And if they did they might be afraid to speak out if they think the chinese government condoned putting a mountain of industrial waste in their local watershed.

The whole 'not required for women playing as men' line threw me off. The company is requiring that all their players show their webcam faces. So in that respect, it includes women too.
I don't have a webcam and don't really want to be forced to get one just to play an mmo. Something like that would require something along the lines of the Police911 (Shinjuku Cop -JP / Police 24/7 -EU) arcade shooter that follows my head movements for ducking behind objects.
In earnest, I'd hate to finish a session in leg cramps and desk related injuries.
