Everyone should know about this.

The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:

* * That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.

* * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.

* * That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

* * Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)

lol'd

I hope this doesn't become effective (if it's even possible.. It seems a bit farfetched..) because that would be total bullshit. How can they be so anal over copyright laws they'd go to such lengths to stop infringement? We can't watch copyrighted material on youtube, smoke in bars, or kill hobos; and everything gives you cancer. Fuck the U.S., I'm moving to the moon.

If they had their way, you would be burned at a stake for using that copyrighted picture without permission. It's like, ironic or something.

Way to attack a completely irrelevant quote made by Obama, ignoring the real issues with his horrible administration.

On topic: I seriously doubt this will ever come to fruition, hell the only way it would work would be inside the U.S., because any country would have to be nuts to sign that, and then it will only serve to restrict internet access within the U.S. causing us, as a country, to fall behind on news since nearly all of our news/current events/whatthefuckisgoingonwiththeworld comes from the internet. Then next thing you know we'll be China 2.0 and I won't be able to play a Mithra unless I have a sex change.

I guess I don't see it as irrelevant that our president cant even figure out how many states we have but yet people trust him to "lead" our country.

Anyways, with the people he has put in as "czars" (whatever term you want to use) it should come as no suprise that he is trying to do this.

There are people in his administration that want to have a all Radio and TV controlled by the government. This would be step number one in that process. Also have people who are self claimed communist. Yet people don't see what he is doing. Giving Government more and more control pushing us more towards communism. Honestly Obama wants to have control of want comes out on the internet. This would be one more outlet he would have some control of. He has control over most of the media outlets in this country already anyways so why not go after the internet.

This way he could stop you and me from voicing our opinions about what he is doing.

No, I don't think this will ever get passed, because it is just too crazy for anyone to sign. But hell crazier things have happened.

I believe if that law passed without much reading into it Obama would find himself the quickest Impeached President ever. Millions and MILLIONS use the internet. He isn't that stupid... I would guess. He shouldn't want a 10+ Million protest on his hands. 10+ Million people > Cops. Even Cops would join the protest. HAHA.

Not surprising at all really. Hollywood shelled out a shitload of money to get this guy elected. They're losing shitloads of money in overseas markets to bollywoods and such. So as expected, they're going to try and RIAA and MPAA the whole damn world.

Umm... Where the fuck have all of you been? This treaty was never secret and Obama isn't even the one who started it. That would be Bush. However, Bush at least tried to get some actual law into it in regards to real cyber crime. It seems Obama dumped everything except copyright from the treaty which, when you think about it, is exactly what the governments of the world should be focusing on. We need to nail those assholic preteens who download shit anime and the latest degradation of music.

They're more of a danger to the world than the kiddie porn rings, human traffickers, and serial rapists.

However, I doubt this will pass. If part of the treaty is to force ISPs into policing their own mainframes for copyright infringement, millions of dollars will be sunk into new hardware, software, and staff. The ISPs would never be able to recover that cost since odds are, they would have to disable thousands of accounts on day one.

It's time for the MPAA and RIAA to go the way of the Comics Code Authority. Neither are needed any more and all they are doing is getting in the way of progress. That, or they need to get over themselves and realize the infinitesimal loss they take due to piracy doesn't amount to jack shit. Seriously, major blockbusters are starting to average $100 million on day one. Even after adjustment for inflation, piracy doesn't even begin to ding all that bank.

Are you serious? Downloading stuff is more danger to the world than kiddie porn rings? Human Trafficking? Serial Rapists? How do you figure this?
