It's called trolling, and you'd think Aleera would know better than to fall for it. I guess the rather vehement response just shows that somebody cares a little bit too much about what other people think of their virtual clothing.
Now that you've both shut the hell up though, I dunno why you're all bitching about this. The text is vague enough to suggest that almost anything is possible, new items available from Synergy (that you seem to think will be rare/ex), pictures of a handful of "useless" augments convincing you that the entire thing will fall flat on it's face. Whoever it was that said you're assuming this will fail because SE did it was right, they've "let you down" with their previous additions to the game (which means, it didn't work how you wanted it to work, so you cried about how awful it was.) Somewhere along the way, some synergies possibly requiring multiple crafts to complete became EVERY FUCKING CRAFT WILL NEED TO BE LEVEL 100 FOR THIS TO WORK. Actually reading the text implies the maximum you will need is 5 crafts of varying levels, as the person initiating the synergy only requires the ingredients. No information about how levelling up your skill will work, but you assume it works just like normal crafting, which it quite clearly isn't. Have they nerfed failure rates? Have they increased skill up rates? You don't know, and you don't really care.
I'm not saying the system will be brilliant, just that I have an open mind about the possibilities, my immediate thought was "I suppose I should finish my woodworking off", something I've been unmotivated to do for the last three years. Take one look at the top level equipment released in each expansion, each one has rivalled or surpassed the previous one (there are obvious exceptions) but I fail to see why the potential for this to do the same is missing. Oh that's right, cuz SE.
Augments were too random? You were pissed you got negative stats on your multi-million gil item? Newsflash, don't fucking try it then. It was clearly stated when the system was implemented that there was a serious risk of ruining your precious items. You have an excellent item, you want more, I'd make it hard as fuck to get a decent augment too, because rewarding people for being greedy is never a good thing. Removing negative stats would just make people complain that they got sod all on their item, and they aren't allowed to augment it again. Just like the positive augments that people rave about, you only focus on the negative ones that completely ruin your Hagun/Weskit/whatever. Never augmented an item, most my gear is rare/ex, and the stuff that isn't is too valuable to potentially waste for a marginal stat increase. While I wouldn't leave it up to chance, I'm quite looking forward to discovering the potential bonuses I can now choose to place on my equipment, because no matter how marginal or useless other people might think they are, it's an improvement that wasn't there before. When you've got pretty much everything you need, this is quite a welcome addition, because it opens up countless possibilities that weren't there before.
Save your bitching for when people know more about it, and yes, I understand the futility of trying to tell you people this, I just don't give a fuck.

There's a fairly basic metric for determining if an addition to an online game has been successful or not: are people using it? There's really no defense for the augment system because, once the new update smell wore off, so did continued interest. I bag on Moblin Mazes a lot, but people use them extensively, if quietly. By contrast, although I do see a few people with augmented items and I've used the system myself (10 Dark Resist and 1 Attack on my Corsette +1 was a risk I could tolerate), it quickly became clear that the system is flawed beyond imagining.
Should you have to work for your STR+1 or what have you? Sure. Is an element of randomness acceptable? Certainly. Long-time WoW players should know what it's like to grind the same mindless daily quest for weeks or even months in hopes of getting that 1% drop vanity pet or .1% drop epic trinket from their quest reward loot bag. In the meantime, though, they're at least getting paid for their efforts. Heading out to try to get a hat with MND on it for my Red Mage, though, became a fool's errand. What really drives me nuts is that I'd use the system without question if I had any kind of control over the shit that gets applied, even if it just meant that I could re-augment the next day if I didn't like what I'd gotten.
Anyone who has been playing video games for more than a few minutes could come up with a dozen ways to make the augmenting system effective and fun without being overpowered or excessively easy. Square-Enix seems to repeatedly demonstrate that their developers really do not play their own game, however.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not attempting to defend the system. It was more of a gripe about people demanding they got what they wanted, NOW. The fact is, the augment system is potentially useful, for lower level stuff. You don't see people bitching about the +1 STR they got on a level 50 item, etc. The only people complaining so vehemently are those stupid enough to repeatedly throw away valuable items in an attempt to extend their e-peen another half inch.

The +1 Attack I got on my Corsette +1 is a reasonable kind of augment. Even if I added that onto all of my gear (pretending that ~60% of my Monk's gear and 90% of my Monk's melee gear is not Rare or Rare/Ex), it'd add up to barely more than 10 Attack. If the price is steep enough, that would be reasonable. Would I mind throwing Damage+1 or Haste+1 onto some things? Surely not, but I know how the system would break if I could do that at whim.

Why do so many people seem to be under the impression that the game would magically fucking collapse if you were able to put +2 attack or +3mp on gear? would that really break the game? ZOMG, it'd be on ALL the gear? That's like a whopping total fucking increase of 3dps! I assure you, the sky would NOT fucking fall. Stats do not add up that quickly AT ALL in this game.
Jurojin - What in the holy hell does someones gear have to do with their argument on a topic of this form? If you want to sit around and stroke your e-peen go do it in the privacy of your mothers basement.
.sotek - Maybe if your head wasn't so far up Squares ass your thought process wouldn't be filled with shit.
It's hard enough to find people to do anything in this game, none the less 5 other fucking people to craft a item. I didn't think SE could do anything more fail then FFXI2 being a total rip off of the 1st pos. I was wrong.
Seriously people, WoW, Aion, LOTRO, AoC, warhammer - just fucking pick something and goooo, anything. Hello kitty adventure island, better yet just spend your free time self inflicting wounds to your genitals, it'd be 10x less painful then this BS.
