I just started playing FFXI reciently and I'm hoping to hit 30 soon. I wanted to be a DNC because it seemed like the most interesting job to me. However the posts below scare me about them not being desired at end game....
The posts are kind of old and I'm hoping something may have changed because I'd like to be a DNC I just don't wana waste my time leveling it first if I'm not going to get anywhere.

DNC is great in SOME endgame situations. If you find an intelligent guild, you'll find that you can perform well anywhere; generally just the top notch class. Places DNC excel are low man and en-masse combat. Situations with small groups (such as sky pop farming, sea farming for pops and some mobs, Nyzul isle, ZNMs, Einherjar, ect. dynamis works too). the real place DNC suffers is HNM battles.
If you take DNC to 75, it's a good job to have. it can be very usefull, and subbing DNC can often be a good sub for many jobs for a long time for soloing and campaign.
You will be required to level another job after DNC because there ARE situations your DNC won't be usefull. But just because DNC isn't SAM and desired everywhere doesn't mean you shouldnt level (and enjoy) the job.

To be completely honest with you, yes DNC is probably one of the most fun jobs in the game because it is versatile in many situations. Unfortunately it's not that wanted because most people are closed minded and don't really know what this job (and really many other jobs outside of PLD/SAM/BRD/RDM) can do.
In saying that, I really can't recommend DNC as a FIRST job to 75. You might want to try one of the more easier to level melee jobs then come back to DNC later on. I'm an advocate of leveling the job you find the most joy out of playing, but at the same time, learning the game's mechanics should come first. The only real skill you will learn from DNC is how to solo extremely well since DNC doesn't get that many invites these days. Also you're going to need your sub jobs leveled so you can adapt to the various situations that DNC can be in (mostly NIN but having WAR and SAM comes in handy too)

Well I won't be soloing 100% of the time, i doubt if I'll be soloing 50% of the time.
My buddy's been playing for a few months and has a 70 THF. I'll be playing with him in 2-man groups most of the time. He's got a few friends also that would group with us, so finding groups won't be terribly difficult.

Then you're good to go. You have the most important thing with you already, good firends that understands you're here to have fun and willing to help you reach your goal. I had to solo from about 60 to about 73. I had a good online friend setting up a merit PT and remembered I was having some probs getting the last few levs quickly so he invited me to his merit PT (@ Mamool Ja stagging point camp). I got Lv. 75 and we still did amazing with our chains. I think it was DNC(me) MNK(my buddy) MNK WAR BRD RDM.
And yeah DNC isn't for HNMs. Low man situations is the way to go. A good thing my old Salavage SP found was DNC was a great job for farming runs where you're not after a boss chariot. For the main reason is DNC needs 1 ability cell and is able to do everything it needs. Dd, enfeeble, cure and erase.
But the main thing is to have fun with the game. Agreed that it might not be the first 75 job you should get, but if you can pull it off and have in game friends that'll take you along, go for it!

You can DNC if you want to. You can leave your friends behind. 'Cause your friends don't DNC, and if they don't DNC, well they're no friends of mine.
Sorry, too tempting. I haven't slept yet.
