Weddings in Vana’diel
A wedding in Vana’diel is a declaration that two Player Characters have decided to become lifelong partners. It is normal to exchange rings as symbols of the vows made.

Wedding ceremonies follow the basic flow outlined below.

Once the wedding rings have been exchanged and the ceremony has concluded, the married couple can speak with a Wedding Master NPC to receive their marriage certificates.

→ About the Wedding Master NPC

Wedding Preparations

1. Select a site for the ceremony.
First of all, you need to choose a site to hold your wedding ceremony. Many couples choose quiet retreats, grand palaces, locations with stunning scenic beauty, or places that hold special meaning.

→ Recommended wedding locations

2. Preparing the Vows
Next, you will need to compose the words for your wedding vows.
For information on the traditional San d’Orian, Bastokan, and Windurstian vows, refer to the following link.

→ Wedding vows for Bastok
→ Wedding vows for Windurst

3. Preparing the Rings
Next, you will need to prepare the rings to be exchanged after you have exchanged your vows. You can use any rings you like, but if you use wedding rings, you will be able to speak with a Wedding Master NPC to receive marriage certificates.

There are two ways to prepare the wedding rings. The first way is to collect the required materials to synthesize the rings. When synthesizing the rings, if you use inferno crystals, you can engrave your names on them.
If collecting the materials and synthesizing the rings is too difficult, you can purchase rings from the Matrimonial Coffer or Celebratory Chest next to the Wedding Master NPC. After purchasing the rings, if you synthesize them with cyclone crystals, you can engrave your names on them.

Proceeding with the Wedding

Once the preparations have been completed, you will need to decide the following points with your partner:
· How guests will enter the site of the ceremony
· Who will say the vows first
· Who will receive the rings first

Attire during the ceremony is entirely up to each individual’s discretion, but you can set the tone by wearing wedding dresses, tuxedos, and other formal attire.
Just as with the wedding rings, you can collect materials and synthesize the clothes yourself or purchase them from the Matrimonial Coffer next to the Wedding Master NPC.

No. You cannot obtain multiple marriage certificates.

Q.Is it possible to get married to same gender as my character and receive a marriage certificate?
No. In order to receive a marriage certificate, you must get married to the character of different gender than your character.

Well at least we know where SE stands on polygamy and gay marriage.
edit: Looks like you can't get divorced either.

I still laugh at that no same sex marriages, considering they made one gender only races. So much for wanting to play a mithra for the stats and get married to your GF who ironicly plays mithra amirite?

I remember SE mentioning a few years back that they wanted FFXI to be internationally acceptable in terms of culture and religious differences. I think it was because someone asked at an older FFXI Fanfest about same-sex marriages, and that was the answer they gave.

Not that I really care about whatever moral agenda they do or do not subscribe to, the simple reality is that players do not always play the same in-game gender as their real life gender, for any of a number of reasons. I consider a video game wedding to be nothing worth getting worked up about, but I similarly don't see why male players of Mithra characters specifically (and I've seen statistics suggesting that it's not all that uncommon even in Japan) should be denied access by virtue of in-game gender nonsense.

I remember a while ago hearing something like, they didn't want to introduce same-sex marriage in case people did it just for a joke. I don't really see how that's fair on the people who are going to use it seriously, but okay...

The thing with being a Mithra male is that, well, actually your character is not male. You "RP" your character being male, but the simple fact is that at the character creation screen you created a female character, saw "Female" in your character's stats and hit Confirm/OK. Allowing same-sex marriage based on people playing Manthras... it just goes against how SE actually made the game and FFXI's lore - as in, players can only be female Mithras because they're the only ones who become adventurers. However, if same-sex marriage were allowed it would just be an added perk for Manthras, so I get your point in that sense.

Hmm. Another thing I'm thinking is... FFXI is kinda set in Medieval times in real-world terms. Maybe it makes sense that FFXI doesn't have same-sex marriage? There is racial discrimination against Galkas in the game's story, maybe there would be homophobia in Vana'diel too? *Shrugs* But then again, racial discrimination is part of the story whereas sexual-orientation discrimination is not and never will be, so there are actually no valid reasons Lore-wise why same-sex marriage should not be allowed.

Tbh, I can see myself starting some massive de-railing debate here... ah well.

Really though, SE should have, at least for Europe and North America if not for Japan, thought a little bit more about allowing same-sex marriage. It would hardly involve much more effort technically and it would please a lot of players. They wouldn't have to make a big deal about it or even mention it at all, just include it as an option.

EDIT: God, I was sleep-deprived when I wrote this x_x

Or better yet... SE should have just destoryed the wedding system and removed the attire/rings from the game's inventory.

Yeah, I like that plan better than my previous.

I agree with you path on that. Reminds me of a friend that used to play on Bismarck-- he chose Mithra and his girlfriend (now his wife in real life) chose Hume Female. They couldn't get married. They held a mock marriage in San d'Oria, each with self-inscribed copper rings that they gave to each other. I couldn't attend since I wasn't online at that time, but I found it rather sweet they went to those lengths. If SE allowed same-sex marriages, couples like that wouldn't have to go through such trouble. A lot males play female characters, and most obviously for aesthetics, appearance or sexual reasons, who knows?

I've been a chaperon to four in-game marriages, only one went through, one almost went through, and the other two were canceled. A lot of this new stuff would have been nice to set up like the Player Event Support. I just wished they decreased the price though. Paying for something like marrying in Jeuno is a bit pricey, but then again what wedding ISN'T pricey? Oh, yes, marriage at a courthouse or by Justice of the Peace.

They really should... like... put a teleport:spouse effect on those rings.

You go to work fishing for angel skins and your poor wife gotta pay for a tele and a chocobo to get you a coeurl sub for lunch?
/item 'wedding ring' TaDAh!! "Aww, honey! You're alway's there for me. I just wish you could fetch me a beer from the fridge (but they don't exist)."

On that note, what about a shared moghouse with double the space/storage where you can rob... err 'share' your equipment together. His and her's, giant moghouse. double mannequins of the same type, just unable to move your spouse's rare/ex items.
