Trying to get a friend into FFXI but a big hangup for him are the controls, he wants to be able to run using the mouse only, but I can't figure out how to bind keys to the mouse (he has a multi button mouse and wants to bind other stuff to it too).
I know when I played I always just used keyboard, but I was wondering if anyone had figured out a solution for those that like io use the mouse for these things (since most newer games come with this option).

Mouselook in FFXI is it possible

Just clicking and holding the left mouse button lets you run, if I recall correctly. Right mouse button moves the camera. Middle (scroll) button opens main menu, click it again to move to the second menu.
Just click on your target then click again to open the interaction menu.
As far as I know, you can't bind anything to the mouse buttons in FFXI though (but I'm sure if you bought a fancy enough mouse, you could do it through some software interface for that specific mouse.)

Also, it's a bit cumbersome to control anything in FFXI via a mouse. For example, the cursor is off-center from your character if you want to move forward or backwards, and the left mouse button must be held down for that.
If you have a 3-button mouse, the middle button opens the main menu in the top right corner. Pressing it again brings up the second area of the main menu. Scrolling works as well there.
And, like Aura said above, you can't bind anything to the mouse controls.
In the end, FFXI isn't a point and click MMO like a lot of Korean MMOs out there. It's either keyboard or gamepad as primary controls. I play via keyboard and have gotten used to it more than gamepad since a lot of the Logitech gamepads I've bought kept dying on me. I can pretty much control my character with my right hand.
Numpad for movement:
8 = forward
4 = turn left
6 = turn right
2 = backwards
5 = first person view
7 = hold 8 then press 7 afterwards to auto-walk/auto-run, then can release 8 after that
/ = walk
* = lock target/unlock target
0/ins = switch targets (just like tab-key)
- = open menu
+ = select status effects or chat window; while chat window selected, press Enter key on numpad to expand it
CTRL/ALT switches macros
F1 to F6 are yourself and party members
Arrow keys to the left of the Numpad control camera.
Home = locks camera behind your character, press again to unlock camera
Page Up = zoom in
Page Down = zoom out
Left mouse button = select objects; press and hold down to move in any direction (very cumbersome)
Right mouse button = move camera; unselect objects
Middle mouse button = open the menu (main menu)
Left mouse button and select yourself, another player, enemy, or NPC to open the submenu for that target in the lower-left of the screen

Well I always played with full keyboard too, but really most MMO's aren't this way anymore. He last played Vanguard, and EQ1 before that so it is an adjustment I guess.
He ended up getting a 360 controller I figure it would probably play better for him since he has played RPG's on a console, and that will be familiar rather then the big difference FFXI is with keyboard + mouse from other PC MMO's.
