Gladiator: Standard tank role?
Mainai(M): According to the info released by Square Enix, it seems like this class has both attack and protective abilities.
Talu(T):Yes. Probably this class can be an attacker and protector. I think Gladiators are similar to paladins and warriors in FFXI. To which are gladiators closer?
M: I think both. For example, if you equip a sword and a shield at the same time, you can use “growl” which can raise enemy’s hostility, then you can enjoy attacking and protecting as a role of tank. On the other hand, if you are just equipping a short sword, you can use strong weapon skills and can enjoy a role closer to attackers.
T: Gladiators sound like pretty useful class! It will be important part in a party.
M: You say, Gladiators will be lightly equipped soldiers by having only one-hand swords, but I was wondering if the ability of them will also be “lighter” than other disciples of war.
T: I think “light” also means to be “agile,” like you fight with many attacks. You can’t say that they are inferior in the aspects of power.
Feature 1: Short Sword
From short blades and long blades, to double-edged straight blades and single-edged curved blades, there are many different types of sword the gladiator can equip.
Ancient sword- Gladius
All-around sword- Bastard sword
Winged sword-Hawk Tail
Connect!On Staff Predictions
M: Since they say one-handed sword is mainly for slashing attacks, most of the one-hand swords must have normal slashing attacks. Maybe there are other attack properties depending on their shape.
T: For instance, as bastard swords have two properties—slicing and piercing—there are three types of attack for that sword.
M: I am interested in the fact that the Hawk Tails’ sword guards can be open and shut. Maybe the weapon skills are different when it’s open and when it’s shut?
T: I am interested in the point that gladius are mentioned to be “tough”. It may mean that the rate those weapons get worn out are different.
Feature 2: Shields
There are many different types of special shields in Eorzea, all of which seem to have special uses in battle.
Round shield
Function shield-Lantern shield
Connect!On Staff Predictions
Will passive and active abilities change depending on the shield?
M: According to Opone Kikuchi, who has played Gamescom version, there are different icons for right hands to attack with one-hand swords and left hands to protect with shields. Therefore, I assume that there maybe unique ability or magic exclusively for shields with left hands.
T: You mean, like, if you have Lantern shield, you can attack with two swords equipped to the shield and you will also get ability to the shield on left hand?
M: In FFXIV, there are two action gauges for both of right and left hands and when those gauges are filled up you can enter commands. It means, not only right hands to make attacks but also selections of shields will be quite important to efficiently use the left hand gauge.
T: Also, you have to be careful about timing to use abilities for shields.
Reader Question 1: Tell us about the impression you got from Gladiators and what kind of abilities you think they have.
I really like their looks so I think I will start playing the game as them. As for the ability, I think accuracy will be higher if you fight just with one sword and without equipping shields.-Kamiyama Ryoyu
Seems like their balance of attack and protection is good. Maybe the speed of items and attack will be faster without shields? -HGPM
They look rugged enough to slice rocks. They are said to be lighter without shields so my image of them is similar to the ninja and thief in FFXI. -Yasutaka
Equipping shields lessen the numbers of attacks you can make. So I guess you can make more attacks when you are fighting just with a one-handed sword. -Gucchii
-If the timing of commands is good, I can defend with shields. Damage will be lessened! -oonaa
-I guess how players treat characters will make the difference on what kinds of fields they are good at, such as healing or defense. –medhi
- Don’t they remind you of GMs in FFXI for some reason?? lol –Chieru
Reader Question 2: What are you hoping for in FFXIV?
A lot of people said they were hoping for a FFXIV playable demo at a Japanese event at some point in the future.
I hope this will make the MMORPG genre more prevalent in Japan. It’d be great if they can interest even those who have never played games. –Ichimaru
I wish there were events before beta test with a playable test version to let us see how they are doing. –JOICE
I hope there are more things to experience besides raising levels. –Chelucy
I want more PvP contents than FFXI. –Dia by Muzika
Make a Casino! –Ranku
Reader Question 3: Tell us your honest feelings toward the new information.
Seems like I can get the excitement I got when I changed jobs for the first time in Vana’ diel–CAS
I am looking forward to trying out how we can enjoy combining different abilities acquired through each class. –Scaretsky
From the new info, FFXIV must be more different from FFXI than they seem. –Yucky

Reader Question 4: How do you want to play with one-hand sword?
I want to fence while dual-wielding. It’d be great if I could attack monsters while dodging all damage. –Gucchii
Winged swords look cool. I’d rather fight elegantly with slim looking swords like that than rough looking ones. –bookman14
I want to leap into the sky and stab the Hawktail into a monster’s head! –Dabi no shuya
Maybe the bastard sword could slice a monster in two on a critical! –Ichimaru
I’d like to equip a long sword and look like a Gladiator. –hu-rann ♂
I’d like to enjoy all-around battles with all-around swords! –Oonaa
-I want to make a lot of attacks with one-hand swords which have short attack delay. –Jekel
-Short swords are alright, but I’d like to try daggers. –Kashimashi House
Reader Question 5: What kind of shields do you think exist?
I think there will be shields which look like they have obvious effects like lessening fire or ice elemental damage. –Torippi
I think there will be shields which can change their size. They can have different abilities depending on their size, so they would be useful. –Oonaa
Like Moogle Shields in FFXI, it’d be nice if there were some shields that can change you into a cute character. –Kakiemon
I’d like to see shields which you can throw to make damage. They have chain that you can just pull it back with…how does that sound? lol –Gucchii

The Pugilist may be FFXIV’s answer to FFXI’s melee specialist, the monk
T: From the pictures and explanations, the pugilist has a lot in common with the monk from FFXI.
M: It may seem that way on the surface, but because the battle system in FFXIV is different, the pugilist can’t just rely on auto attack like the monk in FFXI.
T: That’s true, since you have to select an icon even when you want to use a normal attack. I hope you don’t have to select an icon separately for right- and left-handed blows, though!
M: It will probably be something like two punches each time you select an icon, otherwise the pugilist would be too busy, even when they’re just throwing punches! (M laughs)
T: The pugilist also must always be in close quarters with the enemy.
M: It’ll be interesting to see how they deal with enemies that run away. They aren’t ranged attackers like archers, and they don’t have reach weapons like lancers.
T: They’re supposed to be able to use chakrams to get an enemy’s attention and get in close.
M: The chakrams are more likely to be used to limit an enemy’s escape than to do damage. This is probably similar to the lancer’s javelin.
T: So we can see the pugilist as combining the joy of hand-to-hand combat with the thrill of figuring out how to stay close to the enemy. With the distance between the player and the enemy being this important, it almost feels like a fighting game!
M: It would be interesting if they had moves to help control the distance between the player and the enemy, like “front dash” or “back step!” (M laughs) [These are common techniques in fighting games, the latter of which was mistyped by a skilled FFXI player who was known less for his Paladin skills and more for his hilarious typos. In this case, “back step” became “backsteppo.” It wasn’t in the magazine, but I’m sure this is why Mainai is laughing.]
T: Looks like hit-and-away will be really important! I’d be happy if there were some simple move commands in the game, like LEFT, RIGHT, then the enter key for a spin kick combo!
Hand-to-hand weaponry speculation
Battle Claws, Baghnahks
Will it have slashing attacks?
M: The baghnahks, modeled after tigers’ claws, were only capable of bludgeoning in FFXI, but what about in FFXIV?
T: From the looks of the baghnahks themselves, they will probably be capable of slashing and stabbing attacks. It would be a good idea to carry these around to fight enemies with resistances against bludgeoning attacks.
M: It was also said that you could put poison in the claws, so it would probably be safe to assume that using these weapons with poison set in the claws would have a chance to poison the enemy.
T: It would be great if you could choose which effect the claws had on the enemy, like poison or dark!
Bone Fist, Hora
What does the “beast’s characteristics” do?
T: Two things have been said about the hora; it has low durability, and that when you use them, your fists will be imbued with the “characteristics of the beast” from which the materials to make the hora were taken.
M: The low durability means the hora will wear out more quickly from use, but since you can just have a crafter repair it, this isn’t much of a weak point. I’m more interested in the second part.
T: What do they mean by the “beast’s characteristics?” Will it give you something like the passive job abilities in FFXI?
M: Something like FFXI’s “beast killer” ability, which causes animals to be intimidated for a period of time?
T: Maybe there will be other characteristics besides just beast?
Defensive Fist, Himantes
How will it protect your fist?
M: The himantes are supposed to “protect your fist,” but will this actually be reflected in-game?
T: I can think of two possibilities: one would be a protection from the sort of “exhaustion” that a fisher can get in FFXI, or a protection from some sort of weakening status effect that an enemy or something else could cause.
M: Personally, I think the status effect seems more plausible. They also mentioned that these are the official weapons of the Ul’daha martial arts tournaments. I wonder if players will be able to take part in these tournaments.
T: The himantes is called a “light weapon,” so will it have a shorter delay than other weapons?
Heavy Fist, Cestis
What’s the difference between light and heavy?
M: Himantes is a light weapon, but the cestis is a light weapon. If Talu is right about light weapons, then heavy weapons probably have a longer delay between attacks.
T: Each attack, though slow, would have a lot of power behind it.
M: But what if the real difference between light and heavy fists is the difficulty in using them?
T: I can see that being the case. Light weapons would be for beginning pugilists, and heavy weapons may be for veteran pugilists.
M: It’s also said that this will be used in deathmatches with monsters.
T: I’d like to see some one-on-one, hand-to-hand fighting with monsters!
Iron Fist, Metal Knuckles
What does “destructive force” mean?
T: The metal knuckle uses the weight of metal to deliver powerful blows. The heavier the metal, the more powerful its destructive force becomes.
M: I want to know more about this “destructive force.” In FFXI, destructive force makes me think of skill chains and magic bursts, but what will happen in FFXIV?
T: I may be over-thinking this a bit, but I think it means it would be useful in battles against mecha. For example, maybe destroying the metal plating on the front of a machine and destroying the central computer inside.
M: There are supposed to be a lot of machine enemies in FFXIV, so this seems like a possibility.
T: You may be right about the skill-chain-type destructive power, though.
Wrap-up
Walk around with a bunch of different fists weapons!
T: It seems safe to say that different fist weapons are creating with different monsters’ weak points in mind.
M: Seems that way, so it would probably be a good idea to carry a few different fist weapons around at the same time. If that’s the case, will it be possible to change weapons in battle?
T: If it’s the same type of weapon that doesn’t cause a class change by switching to it, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to…
M: If that’s so, then after defeating a monster weak to the bludgeoning attacks of the hora, you could switch to the baghnahks to defeat a monster weak against slashing attacks.
T: You’d probably lose TP for it, though (he laughs).
M: It’s also a pretty safe bet that you’ll be able to make a lot of fist weapons from crafting.
T: Certainly. I predict that you’ll probably need multiple crafting skills for them, though.
M: The cestis uses metal and leather, so you would probably need smithing and leatherwork to make it.

M: It’s still pretty small, though!

Writing: The more info I see for FFXIV, the more excited I get! I was especially excited about the leatherworking elezen male. What a hunk! If a character like that talked to me, I would probably panic.

Reader Question 6: Tell us your honest impression about the looks of the pugilists. What kind of things do we have to be careful when we are fighting with this class?
It’d be great if Pugilists could fake-out monsters with skills such as backsteps and feints. –Buttmaster
They are like Monks in FFXI who can be pure attackers. Personally, I’d like it if they also can cure themselves to play by myself. – Yasutaka
It’d be fun if the damage would be changed according to the timing of commands. I’d like to have original systems like you can cause more damage if you hit a monster after intimidating it. –Ichimaru

One-on-one deathmatches would be cool. I want to choose several weapons and fight till monsters are knocked down! – Gyan
Please introduce tonfas. The balance of punch, stab, and defend would be very good! –Masha
It would be great if we can have attacks like boxing such as uppers and hooks. –Kashimashi House
I will scratch with claw weapons. Meow! –Horando
