If you've been out of the loop, the FFXIV website was updated with a good chunk of brand spanking new information and screenshots.
With the recent announcement of the PC beta and the newest FFXIV melody by Uematsu playing in the background, do you still feel the same about the game as you did when it was first announced, half a year ago?
How is FFXIV shaping up?

Personally, I'm torn. This game is looking so amazing and I just can't wait to dive right into a brand new world. Yet at the same time, I feel like I'm gonna have to say goodbye to Vana'diel. Sure, they said that FFXI isn't going anywhere as long as there are people willing to play it, but I'm sure if people were to only put half the time into FFXIV that I wish I could, there wouldn't be much time left for FFXI. At first I was thinking I'd still play both, but with real life (school, work, etc) that's becoming less of a possibility. Meh, maybe it's silly being that attached to a "game" I've been playing for almost 6 years...yet here I am lamenting on the boards.

I'm not sure that FFXI could survive people playing both at the same time.

Given that I'm playing FFXI less nowadays and seeing the new content in FFXIV is making me pretty excited about the game now.
I just hope that the recent events in FFXI is something SE will take into serious consideration when going into FFXIV and learn a lesson from:
If not, this will be another "history repeating itself" kind of deal. And, I hope they DO NOT INCLUDE microtransactions like the dearth of Korean MMOs and XBox 360 Live DLCs. I don't want FFXIV exclusive in-game items to be bought with dollars and cents; or see a huge disparity between those who pay for microtransactions and those who don't. That will ruin the game entirely.
However, I'll stay with FFXI as long as possible. With Bismarck averaging high 900s to low 1000s each day now, it's a bit scary honestly to know that this game may come to end soon, and see a lot of your friends disappear from the last five years.

- RMT (and their spam)
- Exploitation by bots, hacks, and cheats
- Players buying/selling Gil (and back to RMT ^)
- Security. Don't wait for someone to get hacked before you do something about it.
- Poor decisions in content distribution like those mini-expansions
- Poor decisions in gameplay mechanics (i.e.- HNM pop timers, drop rates, etc.)

Seriously, the RMT issue is simply about people never being satisfied with anything. Remember the RMT ruining the economy and claiming and farming all your mobs? That was annoying.
Now they send us nasty /tells. A little perspective here, please.
One time password. While you had 99,99999% chance to never get hacked before, you now have 99,9999999999999999999999999999999999% chance. 100% is not possible if RMT is serious about it.
I dunno about you., but I liked the fact you could download the mini expansions from the net as opposed to buying a copy from a store.

I've had a wait and see attitude for quite some time, so far all I'm seeing is eyecandy which isn't going to do it for me. Honestly I want to know what SE is planning for endgame, if it's anything like XI's with a very fucked up reward:effort ratio I'm not going to bother.
I know SE said they learned from their mistakes in XI however I also notice they failed to mention what mistakes those were. So for all we know something a majority of us hate SE could think they did fine on.

Simply put: If SE wants FFXIV to be better than FFXI, then all they have to do is listen to its playerbase.

Depends on what and who they listen to, some ideas people have said are indeed retarded, however some people do mention a lot of things SE could do for an already fucked up system that they just ignore and try to give a BS response to justify their decision.

And how are they going to differ the retarded from the rest? If they start "listening" it'll ruin the game on some aspects and might "save" on other aspects, so I don't think it'll make the game better at all in the end. They'll just put their efforts on aspects that don't matter in the slightest, making the game lame.

I'm the same way. FFXIV and getting that "fresh start" feeling is going to be all kinds of fun, just like it was the first time we logged into FFXI. Everything was big, new, and no one had a clue wtf was going on. Just the way it should be.
But by same token, having played the game for 6ish years, there's definately some sentimental value to it. First time you reached sea, first time you beat shadow lord, first ballista match, etc. etc. The damn game has been good to most of us. It's going to take a hell of a lot to make me want to forsake all that I've put into it.
Those that burned themselves out on FFXI probably can't say good riddance fast enough. But for a casual gamer (who still manages to get some endgame done, even in a casual sense), there's still shit that's yet to be done, new content to be added, and a few more surprises/fun for SE to throw our way.
As for FFXI's system in general... it's not perfect by any stretch of the word. But what game does have a perfect system? I can honestly say that this being my first MMO, I've never seen a community band together through all the hardships like CoP, RMT, and all that nonsense. That sense of kinship may be dwindling, but it's still something that isn't easily thrown away.
... ok, /sentimental off
Whether I manage to live up to my boast of playing both, FFXIV being fucked up and not worth my time, or good enough to finally make me say /farewell FFXI, y'all are still gonne be stuck w/ me. And my BLU will still totally rape you all

Like I said it mostly depends on how much thought you put into the idea. Lets take these RMT spam ads for example.
The community idea was to just flat out remove the tell feature on trials, which is a retarded idea since...
A. This game is relies on PTs a lot, so if you couldn't ask people if they want to PT you're kind of up shit creek
B. Seasonal MMO players would know how to use the tell system very fast (One of the driving points the coumminty says why /tells should be disabled is because no one would figure out how to use tells during the trial period, which is total BS)
C. Can't ask around about server info/etc (Yes I've been asked how "good" Shitbuncle is before and if it was worth the transfer)
However at the same time, SE's tell filter was just as retarded. Now you have something that looks like a piss poor attempt at l33t speak.
Should SE listen to the community more this time around? Yes, however at the same time just take what they say and try to work it into a reasonable solution.

I don't think so. It's an issue of resources as well. How much effort should SE put into each problem? If you put too much on one problem that isn't as crucial to fix, you take resources away from a problem that might be more important to work on.
The players don't have to balance around these issues because they can't comprehend the fact that SE is working with limited resources, especially in an old game like XI that is about to be overshadowed by it's spiritual sequel.
In that light, is working on a method to stop the RMT from sending the players nasty tells as important as working on more apparent issues that might actually affect the gameplay in a harmful way? It's a concern SE has to think of.
But because SE may want to become "more responsive" and "listen to it's playerbase" when players make a huge fuss out of something stupid they don't really have a choice but to put resources into fixing the issue, even though it's as minor as an issue can be (in the worst case).
in this case, they responded to the problem by making up a solution with the resources they thought would be sufficient for a problem like this. And frankly, giving more resources to work on this problem would have been retarded, since there still are a lot more apparent and important issues SE has to work and put resources on. I assume that if it had been their call they wouldn't have fixed the issue as of now at least, because this really is once again one of those "huge fuss out of nothing" issues that playerbase seems to like.

Well to me the biggest complaint is the slow response and how the half ass everything. Back when the filter was announced people already joked off the bat that the RMT will find a way around it and sure enough they're more aggresive at this than the porn/ringtone spammers on YouTube. Where as restricting trails to some extent would have been more effective.

In the case of filter, yeah more resources could have been used to make the system more efficient- but would that have been worth it.
I don't mind if they halfass things that aren't really crucial to the gameplay, since that's what you'll get when they "listen to the important players".
It will just make the resources be split in a way that more things be halfassed while important features be ignored. Not much good come out of it, to be honest.
The only thing I'm fine with that concerns playerbase is listening to critique based on current events. That SE can learn from in the future. "If the event is too long, make it shorter. If it's too hard, make it easier". Nothing like, "Make this hugeass dragon with X skill and Y ability in area Z" but overall suggestions. That would make the events better in the end.
Gameplay and job mechanics though? I wouldn't trust the biased players on this. Some players might hit the nail on the head, but SE has to find those players first. 99% of them just speak nonsense because they can't see the effects of their adjustments, or that the job is fine as it is. So, it'd be awful to listen to the players in this case as well.
Lot of players think that listening to the players would be like the holy grail or something. The honest truth (imo anyway) however is that if the devs are good, they can make the game much better than if the players "helped". It's true that SE devs weren't "good", at least at the start of the game's lifespan weren't, but nothing suggests me that they're not "good" now... only stuck with having low resources and the B class dev team

Oh I agree with this because of how much ppl just want stuff to make them stronger (IE: BLMs bitching about how they "need" an update) for actual reason. The only job I think has a right to complain ATM is PUPs and with how faulty their WHM head's priorities are.

I'll honestly have to come back to FFXI for any massive content updates after FFXIV starts. I kinda wish all of FFXI world and lore that's around be flushed out, before the time runs out on it.
FFXIV is shaping up nicely, SE seems to showing off content before it's polished enough though, it's like "Oh wow you made a Beastman, good job, now come back and show us when you've got 10 different models for the same beastman race, and some villages for them." well maybe that's asking too much, but some of their animations could atleast be inplace, I mean it was just one that stands there....
As for the crabs and SSG and Scorpion / mines that's cool.
NOW HOW ABOUT YOU UPDATE THE INFO ON UL'DAH OR IS COMING SOON SECRET SE TALK FOR "NEVER"...

I just hope I can play with the same great community that was on FFXI.
That's what people loved most about that game was the people.
I really don't wana play FFXIV with a bunch of WoW tards
