Ok so I finally have a PC able to run this game flawlessly and have everything installed. I have a few questions about the game before I start.

1. I plan to be a healer since I usually like being the support type role. I assume WHM but do I keep leveling whm or move on to a rdm or sch? I've heard alot of mixed views on this and am quite confused.

2. I cannot decide on a server for the life of me! Does it matter much which one I pick? I just want one with a decent ammount of players and is a gernally friendly enviorment.

3. What are some stuff I should do as soon as i begin? Besides activating Signet and soloing stuff lol

Thanks in advance to anyone who replys! Hope to see some of you guys ingame

Hey there!

Let's see.. I've been around since day 1, and though I've taken some time off here and there, I should still be able to help answer your questions.

1) Without getting into a ton of smaller discussions, I would say that ultimately, RDM might be what you want to shoot for overall. WHM gets the best heals, higher level Raise spells, and is definitely the better overall healer, though RDM is generally much more wanted for "most" things. Around end game, you will start doing a lot of merit parties, where healers really aren't all that needed, so RDM is more than capable of being the only healer. Other events, certain parties, etc, might need/want the larger healing capabilities of a WHM however, so there should be room for everyone in theory.

Bottom line, out of the healers, go RDM if you want the most party invites. Refresh (gradual MP regen) makes them very desirable to have around, and they can Convert (switch current HP and MP) so they basically never run out of MP.

I would probably start out with either WHM or BLM honestly, and get to 18 so you can do your subjob quest. Then I would switch over to RDM and start leveling that using your WHM (more healing), or BLM (more damage), as a subjob.

At 30, you can do advance job quests, so you could then play around with SCH or whatever you would like to try, and will already have a few classes at a good level to use as subjobs for a while.

2) I've always been on Fenrir so I can't really comment on this in too much detail. The population seems fine from what I've seen. Not what it used to be (the game is 8 years old), but definitely decent.

3) When starting, definitely get signet as you mentioned, and get out there killing. The beginning levels/jobs are all cheap to try, so I would suggest trying several different jobs up front. Maybe you won't like healing as much as you thought you would, and would prefer a tank, or damage dealer in FFXI.

I would definitely level up all of the starting mage jobs a little bit though.. this way you will have an assortment of subjobs to choose from (as mentioned above) once you get to that point. Once you reach 75, you'll basically need several subjobs anyway for various situations, so it doesn't hurt to get them started, and learn them right off.

---

I guess that's about it.. if you decide to give Fenrir a try, feel free to shoot me a /tell. I will definitely come out and group with you if you want.. answer any questions, show you around, help with quest/missions, etc. Once you hit level 10 I believe, I can actually group with you on my higher level jobs, and "level sync" down to your level.. but I do have a few jobs still at lvl 1 I think, that I could join you right off.

I'm sure you'll find people to group with on any server, so don't let my offer sway your opinion!

Anyway, welcome to FFXI! :)

1) White mage is a good choice if you are into a strictly healing class. If this is what you choose, you will want to level this job to 75. Besides healing, WHM offers other benefits such as buffs, teleports, and the highest level of Raise.

When you hit level 18 you will complete a quest to unlock your “subjob”, which is a secondary job that can be equipped to allow a character to use its Abilities and Traits. The first subjob you will want to level for White mage is Black mage. This will help with your MP pool among other things. A subjob is always half the level of your main job. When you are level 18, your subjob will be capped at 9.

When you hit 30 you can unlock “advanced jobs” via quests. Popular advanced jobs to use as subjobs for WHM are Summoner and Scholar.

2) Luckily, I would say that all servers on FFXI are friendly. This is just how the community is. If you are looking for a popular server, I believe Odin is among the most populated ones.

3) First thing to do is just that, get a Signet, kill things. Keep the drops off mobs and sell them to NPC’s for your starting cash. Buying maps is also a very good idea for new players. And most importantly, try to make friends that can help you out in-game.

I personally am on the server Lakshmi, if you need any help let me know!

I suggest taking WHM, RDM, BLM, SCH to 37+, as most of those are useful as subjobs anyway. Once they're 37 you can figure out which one you like best and stick with it. They all have strengths and weaknesses. WHM is the only job that can do the higher level teleports, Raise 3, and various status curative spells. RDM gets refresh and convert, and is king of enfeebling magic. SCH has some unique abilities to turn a normal spell into an AoE one. You may want to level WHM to 40+ just for the ability to teleport yourself to various places, and BLM to 17+ for the ability to warp back home.

As for server suggestions, that's really hard to say since many people have only played on one or two servers their entire time in game.

1) This will change. 100 times over. You can freely change classes, so find what you like early on. When you get into mid levels choose a job and stick with it! Things get SO much better when you cap out (lvl 75), literally 75%-85% of the game is content based around a capped character.

2) Won't matter. All servers are nice and you can transfer if you hate the community on one ($25 one time fee). You can come to Ifrit, it's a good place to "grow up", but has a backwater endgame scene.

3) Make friends. This is more crucial then ever. Top tier equipment is scarce not due to the lack of people that can make items (I can go on ffxiah.com and look up crafters easily), but because there aren't that many buyers. When suppliers put things up on the Auction House and it doesn't sell after 4 and 5 times, they get discouraged and stop making overstock of items. Instead, they make things on demand. I'm in a situation right now where I really want a Beater's Earring for my COR, but since COR is really the only class in which that item is a "need", the sale of them are slower than balls. I got friends to help me run the BC, though, so I'll get it... Eventually. Also, this game is fucking boring without the community to get you through :)
