Hello. With a ton of free time on my hands I was looking for an MMORPG that would be fun to start playing. I am looking for a more experienced player that might be willing to devote some of his/her time to help me get started. Normally, I wouldn't ask and would just do things on my own. However, this game is rather old and I fear I may not be able to get the proper momentum to get myself aligned into zones where I can actually find parties and such.I have yet to actually begin playing the game. I have opened my account, but it is currently patching to the latest version. I purchased the Ultimate Collection, so I do have every single expansion to date. I just severely lack experience.
I want to make a Tarutaru warrior so I can turn it into a paladin at level 30. I have always greatly enjoyed tanking in MMORPG's. I realize Tarutaru may not be the most optimal choice for a tank, since I believe they have a lower base HP/VIT pool. However, I *THINK* they offset this by having the largest amount of MP so I can case cure on myself while tanking and keep hate better than most. My biggest reason for chosing Tarutaru is pure aesthetics.
If anyone out there could help me level up, that would be great. I don't know my in-game name or anything (I guess because I have yet to make my character). We could get together over AIM or something and sort everything out if anyone actually wanted to help me.
Please note that I am NOT asking for money or anything like that. I would just like a little help getting myself setup to a point where I can become self reliant in this game.
Forgive my ignorance if I can get to a decent level on my own without any parties. If this is the case, then I will do that and then just ask for help when I am forced to party and can't find any.

Thank you all for the replies. I am almost level 6 after a few hours of playing and things are going pretty well so far. Still getting use to moving the character and combat system. Character movement seems a little.... odd. I think once I figure out how to use my keyboard to move it will become smoother.
My in-game name is Strategic if anyone wants to send a friend request. I will be playing again this afternoon if you wanted to send me a linkshell invite.

Movement in FFXI can be an interesting thing to tackle if you are used to the control scheme of other MMOs. First thing worth mentioning in that respect is that you are allowed to hook a GamePad up and use it with FFXI. The mapping for this can be enabled and modified in the FFXI Config from your Start Menu (not in the game). Otherwise there are two keyboard schemes in game: Full and Compact. I personally still use Full even after having played other MMO games with the more common WSDA movement.
Full allows you to move use the arrows in the NumPad and control the camera with the regular scroll buttons. Doing this, and practicing a bit, you can move and control the camera with one hand (thumb on the scroll keys, index through ring fingers on the NumPad arrows and pinky for menu buttons +|-). This frees your left hand for {Playing Solo}... err, macros. Yeah.
Compact is much more like a standard MMO these days with WSDA for movement, a few quick keys for menu items, and scroll buttons for camera.
It's probably best to try each, and see which you like best and are most comfortable with.

I really admire your attitude, and I would love to help ya out. I think anyone who has met me in your situation would say I've always been helpful. Well, one time I wasn't so much haha.
This guys saw me in a city and said "Hey, give me some Gil, I need some Gil please.". Nothing annoys me more then lazy people. So guess what I told him, sure! We got in a party and I said "your Gil is over here, follow me". We ran about 3 or 4 zones out and I killed one Orc for him that droped him about 4 Gil. I said "give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime". Then I droped party and got to enjoy about three hours of on and off tells of him cursing me. Witch included how I am a fat loser vergin who lives in his moms basement and gets off to messing with people over the Internet.
I know, what an idiot, I live in Texas, the soil sucks too much to build basements here!
Anyways, I can give you lots of helpful advice about basics of the game and I don't mind helping at times.
Israfel are good people, she will be a good bet to hang around for you at this time.
As for movement... Keyboard all the way!

Keyboard movers - represent! lol
I remember being giddy about the mouse when I first played, but then full keyboard was pretty comfortable after learning all the ins and outs of it~
Aust are good people too. It's very rare to see elvaan who are still down to earth
(It was funnier in my head, I'm sure!) but still, Aust is cool beenz. (Tmil says hi btw dude and grats on the spangly shield of d00mz0rz)~

Best person to ask for help is Chille these days, very helpful. Reece will help you kill things, and Smokeone will tank anything you need.
Let's just say if you didnt notice that this is the opposite of what you should do, whoosh.
Best tip to give a low level nowadays is to seek out the Field Manuals in each zone and do a Fields of Valor regiment. You get gil too!

If you're using a gamepad to play, OP, that might be fine and all (I've never done) but if you're using a mouse ur totalllly doin it wrong. Use keyboard for sure, and I recommend in particular putting it on compact. And maybe change around a few keys.

Welcome to the game and Asura. Hit me up if you need a hand killing stuff. If I'm not up to anything (I'm usually not) then I'd be happy to help.

FFXI has gotten considerably easier than before, but if you think about it... Still incredibly tough in comparison to other MMORPGs out there!

Strategic, I'm trying to get back into FFXI on my low-level character, a rank 5 level 30 Elvaan. Kinda hard to persevere with the game with not being able to do things like the Ninja job-quest on my own, so if you want to team up for anything then /tell Caliburn ingame.
