It’s finally time! The FFXIV Roleplaying Coalition (RPC) is finally opening to the public. Before now, we’ve been sending out private invites to known RP groups who managed to survive through FFXI’s dwindling RP community , slowly bolstering our ranks and getting our initial organization underway. If you are remotely interested in the concept of RP in Hydaelyn, then this is the place to sign up. It doesn’t matter how hardcore or casual of a roleplayer you are. It doesn’t matter if you plan to join a RP guild or just freelance RP from time to time. Even if you’re just a general supporter who may rarely ever RP, we would be happy to have your support.

So what is the RPC? We are a collective group of prospective roleplaying guilds/linkshells, freelance roleplayers, and roleplay supporters set for the upcoming new world of Hydaelyn. We will be voting on an “official” RP server upon receiving a server list (assuming SE doesn’t designate a RP server themselves). We are not a super guild or anything like that but rather a coalition, resource, and outlet of/for roleplayers. So why should you join the RPC and/or try to get on the same server (or at least on the forums to keep tabs on what’s going on)?

1. The RPC will eventually be hosting a plethora of public RP related events in game. You’ll see public events ranging from an annual fashion show, fun competitive sports, talent shows, simple tavern gatherings, and a variety of other in character games and events created by and for the denizens of Eorzea. We hope that these public events will pull people away from the general grind and allow them to show off their creativity, get a glimpse of true RP in an MMO setting, and/or just allow people more opportunities to meet new fellow adventurers.

2. The RPC will also be handling the compilation of all lore upon the game’s release. Those who have a background in FFXI may remember sites such as “History of Vana’diel” where organized timelines and NPC profiles were made. This kind of stuff will be centralized on the RPC site/forums eventually (detailed profiles on cities, dungeons, gods, major NPCs, etc). It’s only natural that the roleplayers handle lore related content in such a way seeing as they tend to be experts in that field. In addition to this, we may eventually be creating an in character newspaper similar to the past Vana’diel Tribune (again, after game launch). With SE’s support (assuming they decide to support us), we could probably do quite a lot for both Rpers and non-Rpers alike (writing contests, etc).

3. The RPC will act as a central hub for all other RP aspects of the game. This means RP guilds/linkshells will be advertising themselves here, a lot of character stories and profiles will be posted here, and so much more.

Further information regarding who we are can be found on the main RPC site. If you’re interested in assisting with, taking part in, or just seeing any of the above things unfold, feel free to sign up. The roleplay community is definitely going to be bigger, more united, and more organized than it was in Vana’diel. If you’re wondering why this is launching so soon as opposed to waiting until closer to the game’s release, it’s because roleplayers tend to need more time for preparations than the general population. We tend to need lots of time to coordinate our character personas, backgrounds, and so on. In addition, it’s going to take a lot of pre-coordination to get roleplayers more united than they were in FFXI (where they were hardly noticed at all and did their thing primarily in isolation).

The site is currently located here, though the RPC forums (linked on the site) are where most of the action will be found for the time being: http://www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com

Hope to see many future prospective roleplayers and RP supporters there!

I hope there's a RP server. FFXI was terrible for the fact it was filled with all regular players and there was a restricted community of RP'ers and shells and all it did was cause drama and angst between everyone for the fact not everyone got along and you were tied to it since it was the only RP available in the game. Would be better to have a server with a big majority so people can choose freely and have lot's of guilds to join. One reason I enjoyed the RP servers on WoW...yes still majorly full of idiots and ERP'er's....but at least there was more than 20 sensible people meandering about haha.

I think part of the problem with RP that happened in FFXI is originally there was no plan for it to to come to the US, and probably more importantly of all, big communities weren't established back then to organize such things. Look at how much gaming has changed in 10 years. 10 years ago if you wanted to accomplish everything in a game, you needed a strategy guide; today everything is done by player run wiki communities for finding it all and FAQ sites. So there's a leg up for organization.

These days if you really wanna go hard core, I'd recommend setting up FB and/or Myspace groups to really get it out as well... I was never into RP myself, but I did respect those willing to get into it. I'm sure it would take hold more if you could actually get a server established. One of the things that also probably hurt FFXI RP was people who verbatim'd the Brady macros for Role Play (It got annoying in Kazham when every thief and their mother had the same macro for pick pocketing you) and so there was a complete lack of originality and often personality in characters. I'd dare say the lack of real customization of characters also hurt RP a bit... hard to have a unique character story when 5 other people in your party look exactly like you. Just the very fact XIV allows for scars can spice up back stories.

RP is fun but only when there are enough people around you that get into it as well. Unfortunately it kinda clashes with any end-game ideals because.. well.. strategy needs to be straight to the point.

I used to RP a lot in this old text based MUD i used to play. It was fun making an entire backstory for my character.
I RP in FFXI too, with myself only - I'm the greatest adventuring Summoner (un)known to Vana'diel lol. Could even write an entire fanfic on it.

Hope RP takes off in XIV tho.. best of luck :D

I mostly played XI to hang out with old friends. We didn't really RP, but the idea sounds appealing next to the alternative of end-game-gear-grinds-and-camp-fests and the generally rude MMORPG community.

I wish you luck and will keep an eye out. Here's to hoping SE will provide us with some RP servers; if anything, it's at least the best way to avoid the initial influx of WoWheads and CoDheads that are looking for a new fix.

I'll put on my robe and wizard hat, but don't expect me to sit around casually when new content is out and needs to be beaten. The bar will always be there to get drunk in, but that mob will only be around for 5-10 minutes every 24~72 hours. You get the idea.

Most RPers aren't in 24/7 roles in game... and even then, If they decide to go Hard Core, RP won't hinder a camp that much.

The "wizard robe and hat" comments are old and don't even make any sense these days, especially for MMO Rpers. It's 2010. Show a bit more creativity :P.

The notion that RPers don't actually play the game is very ill conceived. We play the game just as much as the non-RPers. In fact, a very hardcore RPer from my own group even managed to complete a relic weapon. We camp NM's like anyone else. We do endgame like anyone else. Truth be told, you probably wouldn't even recognize a Rper if you bumped into one in game because all of our RP is generally confined amongst one another. As a hardcore RPer myself in FFXI for five years, I never once met another fellow RPer who stayed in character 100% of the time.

Thanks to those offering support. We surpassed the 100 member goal recently and continue to grow. 100 may not seem like a big deal but for the RP community, it's a very good start considering the game isn't even in beta testing yet. Assuming the coalition proceeds as other RP coalitions from other MMO's have, we could end up with 500+ RPers before game launch. A new site is also in development, one that should be a big step up from our current simplistic one.

Yeah... but they're not RPing porn. I've got a LOT of friends that RP. As Islude said, you can't tell unless you know. My friends were in my Dynamis LS, and one of them was actually pretty high in rankings. And she was serious business when she needed to be. They tended to do RP ls events a few times a week. RP is highly misunderstood by the general populace. It's not all "Oh! The princess hath been kidnapped by fiends! We must save her!!" They tend to do things more related to the game and get into the mindset of how people actually living in that world would be and try to interact with each other that way. When they need to set it aside, they do.
