Wait, when did you guys start trusting Square-Enix again? I intend to come back to finish Wings of the Goddess, simply because I want to know how that story ends (fuck if I remember half of it anymore after two years of waiting for it to finish, though), but reading all the proposed changes does not make me want to return to playing permanently. Adding 24 extra levels at FFXI's leveling pace is a cock-slap to the face. We've spent most of a decade knowing that we'd be level 75 and that the gear we were collecting at that level would last more or less that long. They've inflated gear slightly in that time (Usukane is about 3% DPS ahead of the old sky mix-and-match kit), but if you were pimped in 2004, you're pimped in 2010... until June or November or whenever the hell this nonsense gets implemented.

The fact that they're incapable of figuring out what to do with Monk is no surprise, though, not after the atrocity that is Footwork. Seriously, Tomahawk is a better ability, even accounting that you have to spend merits to get it. What would ~10 extra levels of support job do for Monk? Fuck all. We could get an unimpressive Haste Samba from /Dancer, otherwise, almost all core abilities happen before level 40. Oh, wait, Puppetmaster will get to use Chi Blast if they sub Monk. Fan-fucking-tastic, that and the A Hand-to-Hand skill as Monk has languished for half a decade really motivate me. Motivate me to mail a pipe bomb, that is, filled with rancid pig shit.

Am I ranting? Just a little bit. I'm kinda bitter that the game has stagnated so badly and for so long. I'm bitter that I spent so much time, energy, effort, and sanity on Salvage and got so little out of it. For a while, it felt like I was accomplishing something because I was busy with so many things, but once I got the expansions completed and got to wade through Dynamis for the billionth time trying to get some rare drop that I probably didn't really need (e.g., Bard's Roundlet, which isn't Monk-related, but it's the best example I've got) and then suffered the unending bullshit that is Salvage, I realized that the marriage was over and the only reason I haven't shot the bitch and buried her body in lye is that I occasionally need a blowjob by way of the just barely tolerable storytelling of the game's expansions.

Long story short, there's no reason to imagine that Square-Enix has any idea what they're doing. This, along with the free relic weapon giveaway, are signs of desperation. They're trying to keep the userbase interested until they get Final Fantasy XIV ready to ship. Knowing SE, I wouldn't hold my breath on that happening before second quarter of 2011, regardless of what their marketing department says. Personally, if I was SE, I'd want to make sure no one wants to touch FFXI ever again, since the persistence of EQ1 was a large part of why EQ2 died in the womb and has been an electrified corpse-marionette since release. If they somehow surprise me and all these changes make the game tolerable again (fun would require divine intervention), I'm still too worn down with their bullshit and all its East Asian cultural baggage to trust that they won't screw it up quickly.

For me, Maat's cap was going to be my retirement and one (even if only useful to some very specific macros for certain jobs) decent piece (more of a symbol of accomplishment, really) of gear that no preening, cocky, know-it-all endgame shell could ever keep me from getting.

Square just made that mean absofuckinglutely NOTHING (more so than before). I was finally getting there, I had worked 7 years getting at least some good gear for most of my jobs, and they fuck me in the face with a lvl 99 cap. I can't see how even the people who have all the best gear are happy about this, it means their 7, 8 years of work also means dick, considering that their uber 75 gear and relics now amount to little more than lvl 50 gear does to us. Sure, you can upgrade things... with the help of alliances and fucking spending years upgrading what you thought would hold you over until you retired from the game. And it won't be easy, either. It'll be like nyzul weapons requirements and then some. Fuck square. They've clearly lost it, and do not care about XI anymore- I think they're TRYING to throw out all the stops and piss people off so they'll move to XIV.

Retiring on a high note was going to be the one good thing I have to look forward to. I lost my job a year ago, can't find anything else, and wanted to at least say goodbye in my own way, and now? 3 new add ons, all of which I'm sure you'll need if you want shit for decent gear at 99, and I won't be able to afford them (I can barely keep XI online) half of our JA's just got given to other jobs who can now sub them, and 75-99 will be the exp equivilant of getting a job from 1-75, doubtless.

It's taken many of us over half a decade to get to where we are, many of us were finally getting somewhere, and now they make it all mean shit. I'll get my first 75 job to 99 (War), and then I will quit. They won't be seeing me invest years in XIV, either. I'll give it a trial and put it on the shelf with the rest of the FF's.

Sorry if I'm ranting but this was a REALLY fucked up thing to wake up to today. No point in finishing lvling Mnk now, either, and that was to be one of the last melee jobs I had to take to 75.

Seriously I'm done. Unbelievable. You simply don't fuck with the status quo after the better part of a decade. There was nothing wrong with 75 cap. 50 cap was too low, that made sense back then-but they've built the game entirely too much around 75 cap for this to make any fucking sense at all. Am I alone on this? Seems like I'm the only one who feels like they just got punched in the gut for years of loyalty to the game. Mark my words- they are TRYING to get us to want to move to XIV. If this had been any other announcement, I may have kept playing another few years. I have more important things to do than waste time getting X number of jobs to max lvl so I can do anything endgame. I had passed that hurdle. Fuck it. This is exactly why I hated online games to begin with. XI was my first and last mmo. Good riddance, more time spent writing and making money.

Gee, I can't wait to throw away sky and sea gear because it's considered low lvl now. Or maybe *gasp* I can spend shitloads of time to NOT get upgrades because it requires too much of people who can't be on and in shells at any given moment.

I'll leave it at that for now, because I'm too pissed off right now to think clearly. I'll mull things over, but I honestly think this marks the beginning of the end for FFXI (that and giving away for free what took others 5 years or more to achieve). This game was always fucked up, too. It's always been too much about who has what gear, and not nearly enough about the story and the world we spend our online time in. That has always just been a gimmick to get us to the part where people get their gear. I'm sure there are people defending SE as we speak, but let's see how they feel when they've realized they now have to essentially re-do the last 7 or 8 years. 5 years from now, maybe people will have 10 lvl 99 jobs and all the best gear for 99, but I'm not willing to put in that much longer, sorry.

For what it's worth, it's been nice meeting a lot of people in the game and working with them. That has been the best part about XI. That desire to compete with and work with your peers has been what's kept many of us going. For me, it won't be possible to keep up now- I had a hard enough time before just getting my 75 jobs to the point where I wasn't embarassed by them. 24 more lvls and 3 expansions later, I'll be even further behind, and I can't keep playing without a job anyway. My 1st 99 job will mark my retirement instead of Maat's cap- I could still get that, sure, but it would be meaningless now. "Look, I beat Maat on 15 jobs!" "So? Have you beaten the NEW guy for the lvl 99 cap 15 times and gotten his MUCH BETTER hat?" I can see it already. I was looking forward to that ugly blue retirement symbol (the stats are lol in many cases, it was more symbolic).

Thanks for the memories, you guys. I hope this last stretch to 99 is at least fun.

So 8 years of nitpicking and trying to find the balance between all the jobs, and all they had to do to finish that was release 2 new smns which the promised for 5 years, then what do they do. Blow it all the fuck up.
I assume they are hoping for FFXI to go down in blazing glory but it seems like it will be a faint fizzle with the remaining loyalist leaving as soon as it becomes fact that every piece of gear we have collected becomes completely useless.

I think this is SEs way of TRYING, thats right TRYING, to get people to quit so they can shut it down permanently and focus entirely on FFXIV. for how long did they say that 75 was the perma cap because of balance and such? And a while back I seem to recall them saying that WANTED people to leave FFXI for FFXIV but basically if the players insisted they would make more content. It makes perfect sense to me, change the whole game setup, pull everything out from under the die hards, and do everything they always said they couldnt or wouldnt do because of balance so everyone will leave and they can stop working on it. thats my take anyway.

Actually, yes, do forbid that. Games aren't meant to last forever and this comes across about as well as a 47 y/o corporate salaryman coming home in a Porsche he cannot afford trying desperately to convince himself he's not married to a 45 y/o woman who is starting to grey a little bit and whose tits aren't half as perky as they were when she was 23.

Oh lawd. I remember a few years ago pathwriter you were in favor for a level cap increase and I was saying no, that it'd mess up balance, convert while subbed and wah wah. Completely reversed now D:

"If you were well geared in 2004 you were well geared in 2010" I know a lot of people liked, but I never thought it was good. Replacing things needed to happen, for me anyway, because getting crappy sidegraded gear or stuff with a +1 stat increase got boring. So boring I quit. The WoW route of replacing everything every patch sucks but keeping the same gear relevant for seven years completely sucks too. Ideally, this should have happened 3-4 years ago but like we all know this is desperation to keep XI moving.

The game might die ten times faster or it might have another 5 years left in it because of this level cap increase. I'm interested in playing the game again with a ton of new things to experience and not just zombie my way to another +1 stat increase that took months to get. The only thing I care about is for the first time in seven years something significant is going to happen and it's gotten me interested when I was just going to try XIV and leave XI in the past, where I thought it belonged. But now I'm seeing a new game so I'll probably play both. I can only understand people who were going to leave XI as their last MMO being pissed off and talk about quitting now. Everyone who was going to try XIV because it would be different and get rid of the problems XI had should be happy this is happening, I would think.

When have I ever advocated a level cap increase? You're gonna need to cite that because people attribute all kinds of bullshit to me. On the off chance I ever did, I would have suggested an increase to 80, not 99.

I don't ever think I've heard someone talk about the possibility of going up to 99 before any of this happened, so I should specifically say I remembered hearing you talk about going up to 80 and I was saying how that'd mess things up. I'll try to find that thread if you want but I meant any sort of increase, not the huge increase we're getting. Definitely didn't mean to sound like you suddenly went back on something you said, just that an increase of 75-80 shouldn't be that much of a difference from 75-99.

My reasoning for not wanting a level cap before was because of all the problems that would arise from only going up 5 levels, but considering it's happening anyway I want them to shake things up as much as possible. Granted 5 levels isn't as big as 24, but would people be less annoyed if that was the case? The things people are saying about gear would still apply, stuff would get replaced.

Wow, I haven't logged onto KI for about a year and a half...but its worth it to troll Pathwriter.

Anyway, Pathwriter, assuming no new abilities or gear are added from 76-99, explain to these people how raising the cap to 99 potentially breaks MNK (I'll give you a hint, think about how the H2H mechanic works).
