Quote

Any unit divided by its own unit will be 1.

Yes, any unit but 0. How do you divide something that does not exist?

Simply put, because "Nothing" is actually something. In that case because zero being nothing is in a sense something so it gives the relative answer "1 nothing." God my head hurts!!!

aren't you the same guy that thinks we should forgive the korean parents who forgot to feed their baby.

That's it i'm a believer that you can divide by zero now.

except for the fact that when you see 0/0 =1 . The 1 is not the integer or value of 1. It represents a whole value of infinity or the undefined. Which is what 0 usually represents in these scenarios. not the value of nothing but the value of an unknown or undefined.. like a variable you would solve for.

but my interest in mathematics as little more than brain-teasers waned once I saw how little of it is functionally applicable in the day-to-day actions of most people (arithmetic, on the other hand, I end up using pretty much daily). The mathematics taught in school is almost always of this pure cerebral nature with little to no attachment to the real world

I couldn't more strongly disagree with you here. While I agree that doing math for its own sake is pointless, math (including that beyond basic arithmetic) is one of the subjects most universally applicable to the real world. Mathematics is the tool with which we model and understand nature. I really like the quote by Feynman, it goes something like "physics is to mathematics as sex is to masturbation". He's saying essentially the same thing you are, but from a very different perspective.

I typed out a nice long paragraph to follow about how applicable advanced math is to the real world, and the impact it has on your life every day (even if done by others), but I can't imagine that you don't see this already. What you seem to be missing is that this "purely cerebral nature" is in large part what gives math its great generality and near universal applicability to real world problems. The fact that mathematicians formulate their ideas in the most abstract and general terms possible is what allows a single mathematical idea to be applied across disciplines as diverse as engineering, medicine, and finance. And that's about all the championing of math I can stomach; it's funny, most of the time I'm arguing in the other direction.

As far as 1/0 as a meme, I don't know shit about memetics, but I (maybe more than most) see some humor in it. It's obvious that math can't dictate the fate of the universe, math is only what we use to describe reality, but in the public consciousness as far as I can tell math and advanced physics are viewed as intertwined. Many people don't know why they can't divide by zero, so it's humorous to postulate that something horrible might happen. It's a sort of blatantly absurd role reversal. Sophomoric maybe, but then I've always liked that sort of humor.

And I have no idea why you guys are talking about discrete math. Everyone else here is talking about the reals, and talking about some strangely defined algebraic structure where division by zero is allowed/defined as if it were the same thing is just going to confuse people.

This equation is flawed because it uses the idea that 0/0 equals 1 to prove that 0/0 equals 1.
It's a fallacy by circular reasoning, or something like that.

that is absolutely true but the 0/0 =1 is a universal law....

So you are saying if I have 0 dollars and decide i want to buy drinks for my 0 friends, somehow i will end up with 1 dollar? Maybe this is a new way to produce money or anything else i want !!

That was the stupidest thing anyone on this thread has posted, Stubbie. Removing money is subtraction, not division.

new question! Cause I'm stuck with my math homework and I need help bad cause the math department doesn't even know how to solve this...

I'm stuck in finding the exact value of Sin(1°)
For example: Sin(45°)= (√2)/2
How do I find Sin(1°)

Sine represents a ratio of the sides of a right triangle, specifically the opposite side of your selected angle over the hypoteneuse. To find the sine of a 1-degree angle, you could potentially construct a 1-89-90 right triangle and just simplify the resulting ratio. As for figuring it out mathematically, I'm having difficulty finding or remembering. Frankly, I think we just used a calculator for that stuff when I studied it. I'll see if I can dig something up.

Wow, so many people pretending to know what they're talking about in here, it's not even funny.

This thread title was misleading... I was hoping for another thread like this...

Nerds

Stumbled upon that thread while googling and about cracked up.

That's some of the funniest shit I've read on the web in at least a month.

Edit: Omahgawd, the Alla responses are icing on the cake. This was back before it was post-ironic to comment about user ratings...so delicious to hear about those "horrible people" daring to increase his rating.

Yeah, Alla is pretty fail. I don't know what cracks me up more, the fact that the karma system rewards groupies for who can make the most pointless thread ever or the fact that 99% of the people there with the Sage or Guru title are complete failures in-game.

I was searching and trying to find old classic lawl threads. I found one thread where I was being bombarded by flames from underachievers for no reason other than the fact that I had a level 75 job listed in my sig. One funny partwas when one of those same people tried sending me a tell in that same time frame asking me to help them on their AF quest. The funniest was when one of them were in Xarcabard in the group I was helping do Genkai 2. This guy up and says "i'm going afk" and puts me on follow. I ran towards Boreal Hound, changed gear and stopped. Those who know what happens when you do that will understand. He came back and blew up on me, especially since noone would raise him.
