I'm just a fan of the summoner classes.
So anyone got anything on how will SMN work in FFXIV? Will it have anything to do with the Armory System? I heard on another thread some ideas on how you will equip something in order to call on an avatar.
I dunno, I kinda liked the FFXI way except on how they sucked your MP while you have them out, that was gay. Either way I don't have the slightest idea on how SMN will work on this one but if you'd have to put a gun to my head I'd say you'd have to equip a special weapon other than the staff since it's already taken by the obvious BLM or WHM. Maybe this time SMN will have a different kind of weapon? Or they'll just keep the staff and there will be a staff that will give you summoning powers. lol That's all I got.
Any word/Speculation on Summoning Magic?

They havn't really announced anything avatar wise except saying that the famous summons will be in the game in some way or form. I am sure summoners will be in the game eventually.

It better not fuken suck!!!! But they prolly gonna make it different than FFXIV, I just hope it doesn't drain mp again or be like you call an avatar then does their move then disappear that would suck.
Or maybe there will no summoning magic at all!!!!!!! Maybe everyone will be able to call a summon with a special item and do what I just said, show up > attack > leave. SE is EVIL lol.

im curious about this but the only thing i read was i think they said they were closer to being gods in this game and it will be harder to aquire them. Well thats what they translated from the last dengeki interview

Yeah I heard something about them being harder to get too. But that only means the harder they are to get the better it will be right? right?! > .> I guess it's gonna be different, maybe we'll have a more "personal" link to the summons this time. I wonder which ones there will be. I'm dying to see Hades to be summonable.

When FXI was new they where hard to obtain at the time, then they made ti easier with the quests.
so why make it harder if they would end up making it easier? i do not get the logic of making it harder.
SE does mix "harder" with "time consuming" well see.

I'm hoping the Conjurer class is able to "summon" those cute fairy elementals! Perhaps this will be the summoning class of FFXIV?

no word on summoner at all.
There is word on Summons though. They will appear in the storyline and if my assumption is correct, they are referred to as Primals in FFXIV.
It's been reported that they will lend their power to players after they have completed a difficult set of tasks (as usual).
However, the term 'lend power' is pretty vague. it could be in the form of abilities, bonuses, etc.. or summoning.. but that is still not clear.
but given that Summons are already confirmed,
the 3 possible scenarios i see that come from this is.
1) there will never be summonable summons. they will just be story elements.
2) summons will be summonable, but is not limited to any single class. maybe all classes can summon.
3) there will be a new summon class introduced. though it doesn't seem like it will be an option from release. ( just like with FFXI in japan)
I'm watching closely too. I'm a Summoner at heart.

i recall someone saying there wouldn't be any pet classes. if thats true maybe summoner will just be like the summoners in the tactics games.

iirc the devs themselves said that there are no current plans for pet classes.. but it doesn't rule out pets in the future of XIV. probably for an expansion or something.. because they're really focusing on the armoury system and if u look at it closely its pretty hard to fit pet jobs in there (cos of the weapons).
that said I wonder if they'll just give pets to every job. that way balance between each class becomes less of an issue since they all get it lol.
silly thought tho.

imo i think summoners wont come into play till the first xpac for the game. the first story line seems to include the "primals" in it as great ententes. i assume they will be fought as bosses as such and then when the xpac comes out and the story moves on. their power has diminished and we as players are now able to control them..... i also think/hope they are tied to a weapon, so as summoner you are master of just 1 at a time not all, but give each one a more important and situational roll based on the encounter or zone you are fighting in, i think if they do it right they could create a very unique and fun class that way

I kinda agree with your speculation on the SMN job appearance and how they'll be introduced later in the game like FFXI but I do hate that idea of the weapon thing.
In FFXI I hated situational gear with a passion and I hate swaping gear like crazy that's just so annoying.

well i wasnt really talking about switching gear, but like...... with your weapon equiped that avatar is out FULL TIME, no mana consumption just for having it out. so say (its been a very long time since ive played ff11... sorry >.<) your fighting kirin... which if i remember correctly was weak to wind. so you would have your garuda staff on, shes out full time but has more then just 3 abilitys to use. im kinda thinking like wow hunter but in reverse... in wow most abilitys come from the hunter and the pet is just kind of a tool, for ff most abilitys should come from the avatar and the player is just the tool. now say your fighting faf... which i believe was weak to thunder? so now you have your odin staff on and he is out full time.... or maybe some of the avatars are support based, so you instead of having odin out and being a dpser.. you have carbuncle out, or alexander.. and now you are helping to heal and buff/debuff for the whole encounter instead of dmg. thats kinda where i hope they take it personaly

Just a wild stab in the dark, but this is an idea that popped into my head.
At the Character Creation it's been mentioned you pick some sort of deity/religion/god. Since the Summons are referred to in a similar nature, perhaps which religion you choose reflects which ones 'lend you their power'. Also, it was mentioned that your character will have a lean to a particular element through choices you make in game; another variable perhaps?

I'll be pretty upset if a Summoning class isn't available. It's such a staple class in the series, and it's always been so much fun to play. Even if they're underpowered (I'm looking at you, FFXI
) I'd still love to play one. And I also hope that they keep at least a few of the traditional summons. I hated in 12 that summons just didn't feel like summons.

I'd hate to be restricted a part of the gameplay just to suit the lore of the story.
Summoner needs to appear again.. but it won't happen any time soon. Apart from supposedly being an 'advanced' class for players (even throughout the series), Summoner is also trickier to implement into a game in general.
Given the way alpha is looking, they've still got a lot on their hands dealing with the main character and his/her stats before even considering adding pets.. but I believe as they approach release theyll have more time to work on it.
heres hoping itll come sooner than later

Did SMN come out with the Rise of the Zilart Expansion or was it in the original game?

I believe it was either out or released shortly thereafter, but you could only summon Carbuncle (I think?).
I know they added a lot of new summons with RoZ, maybe all except Carbuncle but I'm not sure. I thought the 3 jobs advertised with Zilart were DRG, SAM, and NIN.
I'm very confident that SE will add some form of summoning class to this game. It has been so pivotal a concept, summons, and to throw it away to a system any class could use seems like a really stupid move. Then again, look at what they did to summons in FF13

. I guess stupid moves aren't off of the table.
