So, I'm still trying to decide which pet job is more suited for me - PUP or BST. The biggest issue I have with PUP is the long wait between spells, even with mana booster equipped. Is there any way to get him to cast more often?

Essentially, you can deactivate your puppet, and reactivate him again to instantly cast a new spell. However, this spell will have no (or at most, one) maneuvers up and this makes it hard to control what spell and the potency of the spell.

However, puppets nuke slow, but careful manipulation is the way to go. Even if puppets nuke slower, they hit harder, and have no MP limits, and can have their hate wiped. It's just the offset.

I'd also add that for soloing, you wanna deal with dmg negation to help you make it to your puppets next spell. so /nin is great and high eva gear sets can also be useful. if you stay on top of maneuvers, waiting for a Cure should never be a problem. and then of course ADD for blm. It takes awhile to get used to but once you do the delay in spells wont be a big issue

yeah usually its not too big a problem but i usually let Serenade idle a bit before i deploy to get an initial hate burst, its also good to keep the pet out of melee range so he doesnt build hate that way. After the first ws i usually have solid hate.

Even so your pet can and probably will occasionally pull hate so equalizer is a great part to use. if the dmg is high enough serenade will self cure. Its very rare that pets being dmgd is an issue for me unless the mob hits like a fricking truck.
