So I recently bought a PS3 and heard that you could play FFXI on it. But I was wondering, do I have to buy every single PS2 expansion CD to install it on my PS3? Since the Ultimate Collection is only for PC and 360, buying every single expansion is hella expensive.
Can anyone help me with this?

I made a sticky here that will answer your question:

Another thing that I haven't added yet are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 Slims and the Metal Gear Edition PS3.  All three do not have backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to the lack of the PS2 hardware that was removed to "reduced costs."

Can't even find a decent price for these to make it worth it. Makes me sad SE didn't make an Ultimate collection for ps2..

I got Vana'diel Collection 2008 for 27 bucks on ebay. I recommend looking around more. You'll find it eventually.

Also remember, your PS3 has to be PS2 compatible to install the game.

Incorrect, i bought my 80gb Ps3 Model: CECHE01 packaged with metal gear, and often play ps2 games on it, I actually got the last one of these models from my local best buy's stock at the time i bought it, they were switching models at the time...

When i did a lil' research on the model # i found that these metal gear edition ps3's were actually the last line of Ps3 models with backwards compatibility, they are not incompatible with Ps2 games.

Unless there were also some CECHK01or L models that also came bundled with metal gear?

Here's a nice chart of the Ps3 models and their capabilities: Ps3 stuff

To sum up that chart though: If your Ps3 has a flash card reader & 4 USB ports, it WILL play Ps2. If not, get a different model cuz u got screwed lol... I'm just hoping i never have to send my ps3 in, I don't want an inferior (newer) model to be shipped back to me :(

Honestly though, it's in my opinion much more lame that they dropped the flash card reader off of them than anything else, i love being able to snap pics with my digi cam and just pop the card in and have a new background on my ps3 or throw them into a slideshow easily.

Ah, thank you Stubbie for the clarification.  I wasn't too sure because I couldn't find the model numbers on Wikipedia.  I assumed all 80 GB post-launch with the removed PS2 tidbits were not compatible.

i recently wanted to get heavily into the game again and was trying to see if i could install ffxi onto one of the newer ps3s. i heard somewhere that you could download a patch and it would play regardless of what model you had. the only real problem is that ffxi ps2 discs are very expensive and i cannot find anywhere.

Second Generation PS3s are still backwards compatible, it's just software compatibility (Sony made a Bleem rip, it's funny as all get out). It's Third Generation on that has all PS2 compatibility removed. I have all the PS2 disks and if you lived near me I'd let you borrow them... you'd have to get all your own content IDs, though.

so if you have a 3rd gen ps3 or later, you cannot play ffxi on it?

so in a nutshell.

PS3s..
first gen -> fully compatible
second gen -> compatible thru software emulation
third gen / slims -> not at all.

I occasionally play FFXI on my PS3 (1G 60gb) just to see what the game would look like in its 'classic' look, or the original look that the game was designed to be released in. Its nostalgic, but also pretty bad lol.

So if you want to play XI on the PS3 (if u can), you'll want to keep that in mind..
The recently released ultimate collection isnt available for PS2 in the US either so u're kinda screwed on that.. but Vanadiel Collection 2008 is, and includes everything up to WotG. it'll be a bitch to find tho. very rare. I think sellers on Ebay know that too, so they mark it up. but you don't need a new copy of it anyway.. just buy used ones.. or each individual one used. might even be cheaper.

You'd think there would be a patch or something they could release that you could install on a PS3 to make the game run in higher quality...

The image files are low quality on PS2. You won't get better quality and those who pretend to know how upscaling works will try telling you otherwise. They just need to re-release a PS3 copy at least in 720p.
