So just thought i'd ask my fellow Titan-ers if anyone is playing FFXIII and what their opinions are. Reading reviews are hardly ever useful imo, i'd rather hear about it from friends. I've been thinking of gettin a ps3 when i get home from overseas, will this game make it worth it? Kinda outta touch with the gaming world down here, i've heard the meme jokes ps3 has no games.. is that still true? fire away

FFXIII and PS3

FFXIII is a good solid game that crushes most games that come out now a days, but that doesn't say much really. Games of today are nothing but eye-candy and titties. One down side of FFXIII is that the challenge in this game is very fragmented. When challenge exists, it doesn't require superior strategy, but fast fingers. Although that doesn't sound very appealing, the paradigm system is kinda fun.
You may hear a lot of neg opinions about this game, but what people fail to realize is that final fantasy games are in a seperate category of gamins. When a FF game comes out, it has super high expectations. In a nutshell, FFXIII is a great game compared to others, but FFXIII sucks compared to other FF games. With that being said, it's worth playing

My only negative comment about that game is that they removed the traditional Final Fantasy victory music, even then it's not really an issue. Yeah, it's only for few seconds after a fight, but it's just one of those things that keep true to a FF game. The game is slow for first hour and a half, but it picks up once you unlock the Crystarium, FF13's leveling system. As for buying a console just for the game, I don't know about that. It's ultimately up to you of course. PS3 has just about the same gaming library as Xbox 360 nowadays. With the American economy in its current state, I doubt video game companies can stay exclusive with their titles unless they're powerhouse titles such as Metal Gear Solid. Hell, SE took out their exclusiveness with FF13 lol when they saw they can make even more money catering to two different consoles. In the long run, I think PS3 will win out.

Durst, what don't you like about the game ? @furi- Ya, victory music and slow starts are kinda standard, i wonder why they would take out the music tho. I guess one thing FF is known for is breaking the mold occassionally in order to keep progressing, and sometimes it pisses off certain fans. Like the Active Battle Mode or w/e it's called or the sphere grid, or even making an mmo out of one of the series. That one pissed off a ton of people in the beginning. I guess we gotta take the good change with some bad, but if you don't complain about what you don't like then i guess there's no way they'll fix it.
ps- @furi- how's xcal workin out for ya? any new accomplishments with that beast in yer hands ?

I got a PS3 basically just for FF13 (and FF Versus XIII), and even tho I haven't had much time to play it, I don't regret it one bit. It was money well spent. Its the most fun I've had playing a game in maybe 6 years or more. I've caught myself smiling while playing, and that doesn't happen often when playing a game.
Plus PS3 has some other good exclusives for it I hear, like Uncharted 2, MAG, God of War III. And "FF Versus XIII" will be a PS3 exclusive, so if you don't like the more linear aspects of XIII, there is always Versus which will have world maps, airships and stuff. Also, XIV will be released for PS3 if you plan on playing that. At least that way you wouldn't have to worry about having a high end computer and all that jazz. Of course PS3 has a blue ray player on it too, if you don't have one already.
Back to FF13, I love it so far, so I probably can't give an unbiased opinion on it. Maybe my second favorite behind FFX.
If I were to try to be unbiased, the only real problem is that I'd say it would be too linear for some people, at least early on. That doesn't really bother me. I like the more linear FF, because I think they have better storytelling. I honestly haven't really noticed, and the game opens up later on anyway. Also the game breaks you in slowly. The battle and leveling systems aren't very deep to start out. That's probably good tho, because it might be too much to handle at once.

It took me a really long time to get into FF13 because of the linearity. My favorite FF from 7 onwards is definitely 12 due to how vastly open it is from the very beginning of the game (so many opportunities for powerlevelling and obtaining equipment early), and 13 is the complete opposite of that. You're gradually exposed to elements of the game. Overall though, I wouldn't really say that it's a negative aspect of the game. It honestly does fit with the flow, even if some areas seem rushed.
I'll say that the game doesn't really get interesting until Chapter 11 when you can really play around with roles and start to beef up your guys via the crytallarium and upgrading weapons becomes worth it. A really big portion of the game actually has to do with endgame and unlocking the achievements - your crystallarium isn't even fully expanded until you beat the last boss.
It wasn't until you actually had freedom that I found the game pretty amazing. I actually love the ATB/Paradigm system, and that really doesn't get showcased until you have characters who can fulfill multiple roles once you hit chapter 11.

I wouldn't get a PS3 for FFXIII alone.
The game console is worth it though, for the many other titles.

Don't post when sleepy, just saw the date x.X

Honestly? No, FFXIII doesn't make or break the PS3. Sure it's gorgeous, but for me the linearity makes it hard to get into. I keep hearing about how much better it gets later in on, but why suffer through a lot of game to get to something you might enjoy?
There are other games that truly make this system. LittleBig Planet, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Uncharted. And that's to name a few and doesn't include upcoming games like Modnation Racers. Plus, there's Blu-Ray, PSone Classics, PlayStation Home (which makes 360 Avatars and Miis look like a couple of red-headed, mentally challenged step children). And the fact that you don't have to pay for PSN services (at least for now). Especially if you have or will get Netflix - on the 360 you have to pay both the Netflix subscription and the Xbox Live gold subscription. And on the horizon, Sony will probably be adding PS2 and Dreamcast games to the PSN store for purchase.
And, in before "GTFO Valefor."
EDIT:
HOWEVER!! FFXIV might be worth getting a PS3 for.
