Perfect Defense / Zantetsuken Testing and Discussion Let's keep it all in one thread

Purpose of this Thread:
We already have a thread about the Odin fight, one about the rewards, and one about SE feedback regarding whether you like the new avatars or not. This read was made so that Perfect Defense / Zantetsuken testing can be kept in one thread instead of scattered throughout the other related threads.

My Current Findings:
Perfect Defense seems to vary between 40 seconds (25 MP) and 1:30 (full mp) depending on MP. 900 MP should cap out the duration at 1:30.
Zantetsuken does damage as a function of the summoners MP and the targets current HP. It's not yet known whether the SMN's MP amount, or MP% affects the damage.

Please provide information:
Since these moves can only be used every 2 hours, it's hard for any one person to test these move sufficiently in a timely manner. Please post any information you have about these blood pacts, including potency and duration. Please note the MP that you had when you used these moves. Edit: Note your summoning magic skill level as well.

Duration: 0:40 - 1:30 (Duration depends on MP, 25 mp provided a 40 second shield, 900 MP might cap out the duration)

Question: Was that 7k damage from Odin on a single target, or a total damage on several targets?

I haven't seen the picture you're referring to on BG yet. This information was from multiple sources that saw this damage on Odin during the fight.

That's not the case 100% of the time. Just helped a friend with Puppet in Perril. Odin only did 1.7k damage. My mp at the time was 1674. I wonder if it does a random mulitplier of mp pool?

Hey guys I haven't seen anyone report this but I've made an interesting discovery. You can cast Odin on something with sneak and invis up and it won't drop it. It's kinda fun to ninjar Zantetsuken an IT mob lol.

I bet I can hit 2.500k damage. Maybe However its possible this works vs the mobs HP%/total HP kinda like a mini Demi in a way.

Also used Alex hit me with a MP build of 1.600 max 2k MP build(did not have with me)

6,11,10,6,8,6,10,11

With my friend had low mp build hit him for

22,20,19,25,22,20

With Alex PD the duration can't be extended with a MP build, have yet to test smn skill.

This testing was just done with MP I did not try to go crazy with smn skill yet....

Alexander is a bit more straightforward.. he's basically a 2hr Ward BP.
Spell cost is 0 and duration seems to be based on smn skill. I got 1m30s and so do most of my SMN friends but afaik they all have decent SMN skill builds...

Not sure how the dmg reduction performs but its very noticeable. Havent got a chance to test status resistance.


Odin is a bit more complicated. He's basically a spell, and also costs 0 mp to cast. Also happens to be the only summon in FFXI where you have to target the enemy to cast.
This makes his execution very much like classic FF summoning.

If he is summoned and the enemy goes out of range / dies before he starts to ready Zantetsuken, Astral Flow will not wear off, and you can summon him (OR any avatar, including Alex) again.

As for Zantetsuken.. it works 2 ways..
for non NMs, its effectively a hit or miss Death spell. Accuracy based on MP it seems...
for NMs, it will only do damage.

Hypothesis
based on limited testing thus far.. this is what seems to be the case for Zantetsuken vs NMs.

1) Zantetsuken does damage to the NM, but the maximum amount of damage it can do is based on a percentage of that NMs HP (probably max HP). This means that Zantetsuken cannot kill NMs at the offset, no matter how low their HP is.

2) Zantetsuken's actual damage numbers are scaled according to MP expended by the Summoner, but given what we've seen thus far, it may be that this MP factor may not be a huge limitor, and that you'll only have a problem amassing enough MP to hit the %-of-NM's-HP damage cap.

Einherjar Odin supposedly has an approximation of 100,000 HP. so if you can reach 7000 damage on him, that would be a 7% max HP damage cap. Of course, this is only through 1 documented use of Zantetsuken on him...

because of this.. it is my belief that any attempt to use Zantetsuken would probably have to be carefully calculated.
but for now.. we just need more documented damage numbers on mobs and MP expended

I have been hit for 50 dmg by 1k Needles with Perfect Defense used 10 sec before the move went off. (344 skill / 1257 mp) Damage reduction gradually decreases with the time, very easy to notice, Seems to be -95% at the begining then -50~75% to the end.

Against the VNM T3 MegaCrab, Krabkatoa. MP max for me is 1157 /SCH. I'd just gotten Odin and my group demanded I use him off the bat. Oh. And my SMNing skill is just under 300... Like 287. But it's capped. I need more SMN gear. And I was just under full MP here. I'd done a Dream Shroud on Diabolos Just Prior.

Also, you'll notice a dispel. That's the raw damage right after Dispel was cast. Odin was out after the DEF Bonus was removed.

--edit... there was a bunch of other stuff but then i saw the last post and said.. nevermind.

edit--- no i take that back.. i'm thinking its raw 10% of HNM current HP.

The screen shot of the 7318 on Odin, the Zantetsuken does an additional 400 damage as well. Or the 400 damage that is accompanying the 7318 in the chat log is from an undisclosed source/move or possibly on the summoners Odin. Not sure what that's about.

That could be Odin turning to hit Odin while Odin was waiting to Desummon.

Mine was 1 straight hit. Krabkatoa has invisible HP though.

having fought the bastard yesterday I was wondering if my game was broke. I would wager its right around the 20-25k HP mark.
