So I currently am investing time back into FFXI after my on-and-off attendance to it. Not very sure if I currently am too in love with the idea of rerolling from scratch but since my last character had smn, blm, thf to 75 I am weighing my odds on what I should be playing now I do not want to be a caster but not too much of a class that if they do too much DD they just die. So I was considering Monk but I could be going the wrong way all together, so I'd like to know opinions if it would be something worth giving a shot and taking to 75 from scratch or aim for something else.

SAM is plenty sturdy, and can even tank a lot of shit. Also, you're not restricted to /NIN on a lot of endgame stuff.

Nearly any job can tank, play what you like and adjust around that.

i too just came back, and having a blast (several friends restarted due to the nice steam deal etc), the game is much more "noobie/starter" friendly than it use to be. the signet changes and fields of valor are very helpful (gives minor gold reward too), and your starting nation has a quest line that helps you start with several basics of play, from sandy i recall having to use the auction house, kill something in la thiene, touch the holla crystal etc etc some were items, some were gold, and some were exp rewards. last, i would recommend starting as war, and level that to 30, you now have a solid base as a sub for any melee job, and can unlock whatever you need at that point, dnc, sam, etc etc

mnk/war > thf > rdm/blm > whm imo when it comes to how awesome the six solo, least the first three choices can start with hand to hand and get by (the second and third would save to buy something, with the help of fov, and selling droppables)

I was wondering this too sorta...

I am debating between MNK and SAM on which to level and for soloing purposes I think that MNK makes a better choice with the extra healing from merits(regen from chakra) with the extra attacks and more haste gear available for MNK along with kick attacks and counter seem better then sams TP gain when it comes to soloing.

I have just mage jobs but gearing out a MNK seems a bit easier then a SAM I think.

What does everyone else think?

To answer ops question it depends on what you want to do endgame, if its HNM don't roll MNK if its everything else event related MNK is a sturdy job but so is SAM but its nice sometimes to be the less popular class when it comes to getting ex items and dynamis drops ect..

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread but I figure this is a better place to put then then make a new thread asking almost the same question you are.

With the upcoming changes to level cap, I would say, "Level whatever the hell you want." Although I'm not holding my breath, there's no guarantee that Samurai will still be top dog at 99.
