As the title says, I've been away for 5 years-ish. I see that alot has changed and alot has stayed the same.

I hear that it's possible to solo to the level cap now but I havn't a clue on where to go to do it. Also, is there a list of quests/missions somewhere that shows levels? I only see them listed by fame or minimum level (being to accept it, not complete/solo it).

Is it just me or is the AH comepletely empty??? (windurst) How am I supposed to earn gil to buy gear if the AH isn't being used?

Any tips or advice? I feel completely lost looking at everything now.

By the way, I'm hoping to go for Dancer, been reading the job forums, do they get parties alright or is there still a big stigma about jobs where only certain ones get a party... ever. (was a DRG, MNK, DRK when I played)

Soloing to the level cap is kinda misleading.

Use the Jeuno or Aht Urghan AH for anything higher than level 10.

As far as Dancer, they easily get parties for leveling and merits but end-game... not so much because Dancer requires TP to execute moves and by building up rapid TP, you're feeding TP to the big baddies and you don't wanna do that. Also, Drg, Mnk and Drk get parties too. If you've been gone that long, you might not even know about sushi, which is food that gives huge accuracy bonuses and allowed more people to want to invite other jobs. In addition, many jobs got new job abilities which made them more useful. It's a shame that SE took so long and so many had to sit out because their jobs were about as useful as football bats.

Ah, I see.

Is there some new system of transportation in here or am I stuck with running and praying not to get killed? I remember being able to rent a chocobo but I can't now and most certainly couldn't find anyone to escort me around/teleport me anywhere.

In fact, since I started up again 2 nights ago I've only seen 3 other players! ...they just ran by, going about thier business without responding to my /tells.

Lost in VD,
If you are Windurst, do missions get rank 3 fast. It helps to get airship for travel. Get Crystals for teles of dem, mea and holla. You can get Sneak/Invisible tools/meds. from AH to get around without aggro. Turn in same items as for subjobs to complete quest for access to White Gate. Get yourself reraise meds or ring to make it through and go to Jeuno in case you aggro. Do /sea all blackmage 65-75 and ask each for help with d2 to get back to your nation or home point. Do /sea all Whm to get a teleport. there are still nice folks around but most high levels somehow become arrogant and unfriendly. Be ready not to get upset when folks lose kindness and become rude or ignore you. Just enjoy the game and make friends with nice folks. Join a linkshell of people who believe in team work and willing to welcome you back. Best Wishes, one of the nice folks who used to help everyone but quit months ago.

Ooo! Consumables that I can buy for teleports?! I remember sneak/invis but they were hella expensive.
So far I have 8 RDM (wasn't sure what job I wanted) but now I'm starting up as MNK to 18, then WAR to 30/37, then gonna work on NIN & SAM a bit to sub for DNC.
I've got about 500 gil. How am I supposed to be making money at such an early level? I saw the little book things but they don't give much money and only useable once per game-day is a bit slow.
Is it possible for me to solo the missions or will I have to beg for a high level to help?

@8, your best bet for gil is farm for silk by killing crawlers outside Windurst; at higher levels, you can kill harder yagud in their Giddeus village for silver coins. When it is closer to full moon on your Time menu, you get drops faster. Crafters used to buy these items fast off the AH. I think the best job in the game at this time is SMN, a WHM or Sch sub would be cool and I love Pup. Sell Yag feathers and other items to npc for fast gil so you can get teles or put items on AH. Dont forget to get a ring so you can get more xp when farming and get the book pages that also add to your xp. Selbina milk gets you regen at low levels so you dont die while poisoned with low hp, Shakrami cave is a good place for bone chip, silver coin and silk farming at 18-25 levels and dont forget to do the supply delivery quests so you can actually get npc warps for different areas. Talk to npc for signet for supply quest and deliver supply to nearby area npc so you get cheap warp service. I never got tele but went everywhere by using warp npc.

Empress band from the signet npc, under the "other items" categories. and the book can be found near outposts, or at the zone before you enter windurst.
You mentioned you saw the book, I think. You pick a page, it tells you which mobs to kill, and you can do it once every game day.
The book will reward you extra experience points every time you complete a page.

Oh, ok! I did see the book and tried it out a bit. the ring costs points, I have a few points but how do I get more, just kill stuff with the signet buff thingy on?

Is there a way for me to buy items from the Bastok Conquest thingy if I'm Windurstian or do I have to visit the AH? Referring to Legionnaire's Knuckles.

Also, where would be the best Ah to look for Republic Knuckles and about how much do they run?

One more thing, where is a good place to farm? Currently lvl 8 MNK but want to farm as I lvl to be able to afford this stuff.

Sadly the game is not what it used to be back in 2004sh.
Really hard and boring if you're a starter or a lvl1.
Only end-game is interesting, even then it's hard to get or gain any of value..
Luckily for you, you know the game.

visit the consulate or whatever for Bastok is in Windurst. there is a Conquest rep there that you can buy items from that nation at 1.5x the normal cost. additionally, your nation must be ranked above Bastok for certain items (if not all of them, I do not recall....) early farming is much like it was five years ago. you can still collect Beehive chips and sell stacks for around 3k. Silk Thread sells decently. hell, fishing is cheap and easy gil if you sell stacks of Moat Carp on the AH (Jeuno or San d'Oria are the best places for that). Crafting is more a sinkhole unless you produce consumables (cooking, fishing and alchemy) since the game has been around so long and so many pieces of armor made. they practically give away Haubergeon/Scorpion Harnesses in boxes of Kupo Flakes.

Tips? Make a BLM and burn Vunkerl from 47-75 and merit there. It's the easiest way to get on your feet again. They are also a great solo class since you can kill beastmaster pets
