I'm just returning to FFXI today, by chance. Downloading the updates as I write this infact. Not really coming back for any particular reason, I just kinda miss the game. Not really sure how I feel about 99 level cap though.

We were having a discussion about the lvl 99 cap yesterday. Some of my teamates were saying it's a ruse for people to get discouraged and transfer to FFXIV instead. It could make sense....if it takes 42k to level to 76...can you imagine how much xp it'll take at 98? But you know there's always going to be a few people who'll want to take the challenge just so they can tell others they did it.

That was the main thing I was concerned about really. Getting 74-75 made me suicidal enough, I don't really fancy having to go any further, unless SE comes up with a really interesting levelling system, as opposed to killing the same mobs over and over again for hours on end.

Few reasons why people are coming back:

  • WoW is at the end of it's latest expansion and quite honestly not worth fighting the same boss over and over again 20+ times each week.
  • FFXI March update with new summons (I know that's what made me come back, I'm a big fan of summons)
  • Upcoming updates with new features and new level cap
  • Better community. Sure WoW have their guilds and a lot more players but even in guilds, a lot of people just don't give a shit about you. They all want the same thing, gear or achievements. I find in FFXI since it's a lot more group based, you have to keep a good reputation. If you're nice to people, you can easily find help for events or gear you're trying to farm.
  • The challenges!! FFXI is 10x the challenge that WoW will ever be. Even Blizzard stated that they only created hard modes for those hard core players that spend x amount of time in front of their PC until the boss is dead. Hard modes were never made for the regular players to beat until they get better gear which at that point made the fight stupidly easy. FFXI doesn't have that problem. Their battles are usually tuned for the correct difficulty which requires players to find the appropriate group composition to take down the boss/event.
  • Fan base. Whoever is a fan of Final Fantasy will always have a desire to try everything new from the FF series over other games.

I may have set myself to be subject to a flame war but these are my opinions having played both games for more than 3 years each.

All of this is why im coming back WoWs content is over with till like December maybe even later after hitting a 2500+ Arena rating in WoW im done with it and bored with it the PvE isnt hard enough to hold my attention the way FFXIs could and the cap increase new content and missing 2 years worth of content is bringing me back oh and who could leave out FFXIV it just looks so good

I'm tempted to start playing again as I haven't decided if LOTRO is worth my continuing money or not and I'm super bored with WoW.

If it was back in the day pre-ToAU where 5-8k per hour was the norm I'd agree with you. But it's a toss-up post-ToAU. With all of the Maat caps and capped merits, I believe the community has shown more than enough that they're willing to go all the way.

The amount of exp is already 44k from 75 to 76, which if we continue the trend will increase to 46k for 76-77...if we continue that trend:

77-78: 48k (+2k)
78-79: 50k (+2k)
79-80: 53k (+3k)
80-85: 68k (+3k each level)
85-90: 88k (+4k each level)
90-95: 113k (+5k each level)
95-99: 137k (+6k each level)
99-100: 144k (+7k just to make us cry)

So...144k tnl to get from lvl 99 to lvl 100....ouch.

'course these numbers are made up, but looking at the "to next level" trend found on ffxi wiki, I believe my numbers might not be far off.

Now some jobs might be able to pull it off a lot easier than others. I'm thinking brd, cor, whm, rdm, sam, mnk, drg will all get to 100 easily, but what about jobs like bst, dnc, and especially blms... >.<

What if they put new Genkais >.<

XI is dead.....needs XIV already....sic of playing non-MMO's damn it.

I'm the type that when I say I'm done, I'm done...Havn't played since NOV. Have no intention of playing again. I'll hit up XIV to be sure, but i'll be the casual player and just craft all day, and dick around. I don't think I can even consider the 12+hours of game play like I used too......

Then your comment is worth nothing. You're basically stating a game is dead for your own self because you are no longer an avid MMO player. For others, FFXI is very much alive and kicking. I play 4hrs+ a day and still liking the game. If I weren't on this game I'd be playing 4hrs+ on WoW. I guess you can return to your console games now.

ya know i was pretty jacked when they announced all the stuff at vanafest. how ever over the past couple months i finally awoke to the reality that there just slapping a new shiny coat of paint on the same old product. i can hardly keep interest in xi. the combat is painfully slow boring and mind numbing. the same can be said for just about every thing else.

Frankly the only thing that keeps me logging on is a sense of duty to the salvage group i am a part of. I really want to see how the story to wotg is going to play out, after that i thing i am going to call it quits. Will i miss people i interact with while playing? sure but that's what they made email for.

I'm coming back because Activision is ruining WoW. The game was fun but mindless. I've bounced between the 2 games about a dozen times since the launch of WoW. (Been playing FFXI since its launch on the PC). You get MUCH more of a sense of accomplishment out of FFXI than you do WoW. (For those of you that played at the PC launch of FFXI, remember how good you felt when you got your sub job? or when you unlocked your first advanced job? Or when you finished your limit breaks? (All this isn't that great now because there are more lvl 75's in the game than anything... but getting it done in the first few months was one hell of an accomplishment... I had "high" level 58 JP players help me get my PLD AF1. and at the time, the level cap was still 70.) In WoW, you could fall asleep on your keyboard and hit level 80. With any class. (I have 6 of them... it's... not... hard...)

The updates were the final straw in the WoWing of mine... chances are I will be playing FFXI until XIV comes out.

WoW CAN be fun, but that fun-factor has decreased a lot in the past couple years. You can be a fully geared 80 in a couple weeks (faster if you either player 24/7, play a healer/tank).
