o they finally announced a JP release date.
i was waiting for this info to drop.
its good news yes..
the NA version will likely come within 2-3 months.
and this 2 month span will buy me some time to finally do a perfect game of FFXIII (stupid enemy intel and missable mobs...), level jobs to 80, play XIV and so on...

This makes up for the stringer of turds Sony has unleashed upon us for the last several updates.

At least they release turds. I'd rather get 2 turds than 1 really sharp poke in the eye like Nintendo does. Turds can at least deliver false hope.

lol back when i first played ff9 on the ps1, i'd open the disc tray and close it back to skip FMV sequences...
i think that works on the PS2 too..
cos my disc was scratched..
thats also one of the tricks people use to speeden their playthru for Excalibur 2.
another method was to rub toothpaste onto the disc.. which i also tried (cos I wanted to watch the ending and it didnt load) but it didnt work so well..

Most repairs I see usually suck. I want to see if that used game/music store offers CD repairs or not since I really miss FF9 and consider it the last good FF lately.
And before anyone gets on my ass, the main reason I loved 9 was because of everyone had a set "job". Zidane was a thief, Vivi was a black mage, etc. None of this where everyone can do everything type of thing like 10 and 12 did. I know 10 required a lot of effort but other than weapons/appearance every character felt the same in terms of abilities.

understandable gripe. characters in 10 were basically generic other than overdrives and starting off with +20 to a particular stat.
12 attempted to give characters more individuality with the zodiac job system, which i'm told isn't half bad, except that it reinvents the games battle mechanic entirely..

And the fact it's exclusive to Japan?
Honestly, I wish SE would go back to a job system or give each playable character a set job instead of this "go nuts and make them do everything" thing they've seemed to be doing since the PSX era.

That's been in place since 2. 3 offered job changing, as did 5, which brought about subs. 6 Allowed every character to learn every spell. 7 was the first real one where everyone could do everything at once while 8 had plenty of limits on that. 10 didn't hit a generic point until about 60% through the game when shifting to other grids started. 13, even though everyone could do every task, there was a defined "Best" at each one, Lightning being the Commando, Snow being Sentinel, Vanille the Medic, Hope the Ravager, Sahz the Synergist, and Fang the Saboteur.
Leaving you at 7 and 12 were the only real ones where everyone could do everything at once, they the intention was to customize the character in a specific way and NOT do that. Most people just went for loading down though I'm sure they meant for one character to have loads of magic, and the other two to use mainly commands and independents. 12 had directions that yielded certain set ups. You could go with a mage armored caster, heavy armored with better accessories, or light armored with high HP and technicks. In the end it was just easier to grind LP and go all out. Which is why they added the Zodiac jobs.
Your complaint has to do with the fact the American critics constantly want the versatility and customization instead of being set on a fixed growth, Which of course.... they also can't stand linearity, which is their big beef with the path in 13. Largely, if you wanna complain about gaming these days you should complain about critics and take less stock in reviews. They're the ones leading the gaming community in the direction it's going. I only rely on reviews and critics if I'm REALLY iffy about buying something. Which, unfortunately as the market has expanded, people have to rely on them more and more because there's so many choices and people have to decide where best to put their money.

Tactics? That was PSX era too
I meant for mainstream. I do wish SE would do more tactics games also though.
@ Vari, I'm aware of the things in 3 and 5 but as a job you were set on equipment, a default ability, and one ability/trait of your choice (in FF5) so saying everyone could do everythign was somewhat of a stretch to say.

Why not just emulate it on the PC? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing illegal about downloading a game if you already physically own it.
You're also free to make it look really nice on the PC. The thing that bothers me the most when it comes to buying old titles on the PSN(and Wii shop channel too) is that they're emulated in the same old 320p resolution. I'm sure any PS1 game could be easily rendered in 1080p if the developers weren't too lazy to make a decent port.

This is true, if you own the game you can legally download the game onto your PC as long as you can produce the discs, should the FBI come a'knockin.

There wasn't a need for 1080p way back then, basically all sony does is probably take old backups that are on their system or master discs from games and copy them onto PSN.

1080p wouldnt work...
hell, 720p is literally a stretch.
With PS1 FFs at least, the polygons used in the 3d models weren't meant to be upscaled to HD, so in the event that they are, they don't look quite right. FF7-9 used very different 3D models, right down to the way they're designed though. Whether they look good or not depends entirely on how well the 3d models upscale. I believe using a basic frame with minimal polygons fairs better.. not sure tho. You can also do a FF10/11/12 comparison..
Another thing with PS1 FFs is that they were 'fake 3d' games. Environments are mainly 3d models moving on top of a pre-rendered 2D background. They may have been high-resolution in their day (relative to 320p) but they're raster images, so they lose integrity the moment they're upscaled.

Nintendo would like to announce a very special and popular game that people have been demanding for. After several months of barely updating anything, we would like to open in the Virtual Console......
Spoiler
Enjoy, and we will release more spectacular games like this in another few months!
EDIT: Hell yes to FFIX being on the PSN, don't have to play the pirated version on my PSP now.

PSX emulators are a pain up the ass to work with compared to 8/16 bit emulators. Since you need to get graphic/audio plugins, trial and error for each plugin for it to look right, and finding an ISO of FF9.

This can also happen if your PSx is too old. I have that problem when I first bought FFIX, we had to go back to gamestop and buy a one of those mini playstaitons for me be able to play it. My big grey brick decided it didn't want to play anything made after 1999.

I always find it funny that people get so butt-hurt over other people's personal preferences that we have to preface everything we say with explanations of why we think differently than they do. For such a largely outcast group, gamers sure are a finicky, disjointed group.
