I'm just curious what the PLD community thinks of Gladiator in relation to Paladin. I think the biggest obvious difference is there seems to be no initial known white magic, which I won't lie attracted me to the job in 11. I think I will be playing as Gladiator, but I hope I am as passionate as I was about it when I played PLD in 11. For whatever reason I loved exping, but endgame just wasn't as much fun for me. I could never get into it, part of the thrill for me was multiple mobs over a span of time. I know some endgame events were like that, but it just didn't feel the same.

Anyways, I was just curious what my fellow Paladin commrades would choose to do.

Just level Conjurer too, and equip gimp white magic to gladiator. Fix'd.

not 100% sure if ill pick up gladiator yet, probably eventually ill lvl it as i like tanking, but for me i chose paladin for the Holy knight theme of the job gladiator doesnt have that. Theres something noble about paladin. soooo I dont know yet. None of the jobs strike me as "wow" yet.

probably lancer, maybe archer as well. If they bring back pup (doubtful but i can hope right?) then ill definently make that my first job

I'll wait and see how it goes. I don't have to have have a ton of gear. I know you can't swap gear in combat but still dosen't mean you'll need a ton of armor for one job.

Actually, i see Paladin in FFXIV as the following:

1) Level gladiator as your main class.
2) Level conjuror part-time to obtain spells like cure, mana regen abilities, buff abilities, etc.
3) Level other random classes that give any abilities that convert damage to HP, or allow you to give a burst of HP back in some other way. I believe pugilist has one that converts damage to HP.

By combining all the different class's abilities together, one can get a paladin.

The same would actually apply if you wanted a dark knight. You'd level a melee class of your choosing, and then supplement it with Thaumaturge to get debuffing spells, and level conjuror to get access to damage magic! To be honest, I think the possibilities are endless in this game for making any custom character you want.

I hope not certainly.. I mean I hope it won't be a class centred only on tanking.. I wanted to be a dual wielding DD.. e.e

Well, after playing a bit in the beta, I also came to the conclusion that pretty much anyone can mix and match abilities to create a somewhat "unique" character.

Assigning defensive buffs and healing magic from Conjurer to a Gladiator definitely seems duoable, as I've dabled with it a bit. It definitely works... but will it work as well at high levels ? Can't say for now.

Of course, that may very well change in the future, but we'll see in due time.

As for Gladiator itself, I saw plenty of offensive abilities that tend to make me believe it is not solely for tanking. It seems good at it, but seems able to do some damage as well.

I'd say if you want to actually make yourself into an "optimal" tank, you'll have to take some abilities from Gladiator and Pugilist, heck, even a little from Marauder, since all three jobs have abilities that deal with increasing enmity.

So in order to make an "optimal" tank, you'll probably want to focus on abilities to deal around keeping enmity on you, more than actually focusing on a single class.

Because both Gladiator and Pugilist seem to be perfectly able to tank, via different mindsets : Gladiators tend to use shields and guard, while Pugilists focus on dodging. As for Marauders, they seem to rely on their actual DPS with Greataxes combined with their enmity increasing abilities to tank. (Low-level tanking Warriors from FFXI, anyone ?)

Regardless, I agree with Palidor said. If one wants to make something that looks like a Paladin, one only has to do as he says... for now, at least it seems to be doable.

I'm not even going to try to recreate classes, not saying it won't work, but new game = new mindframe for me.

Well, the point isn't so much to "recreate a Paladin", moreso than simply having some added survivability. Cure and Stoneskin, for instance, seldom are useless abilities, am I right ?

Also, if one Gladiator is optimized for tanking and another is optimized for DPS and that both do well and contribute evenly in their respective roles, I don't see what's wrong with it.

However, there will be quite a bit of trial and error in the coming weeks. Only by then will we really know what works and what doesn't.

Well I still am going to probably dodge subbing magic at the start to see if it's weakened or not as a sub.
