Scientists Create First Man-Made Cell

The Science of It

In Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Snake had to rescue a doctor who helped the world by creating a technique that turned algae into fuel. I'm still not sure if I'm freaked out or excited about this, but researchers just announced they're on the path to start doing just that. However, that's not the only application that they hope to do with what they just accomplished. Being able to rewrite an organism's DNA with man-made genetic material could lead to any number of things, chief among them a cure for HIV.

The scientists are actually ready to use this method in next year's flu vaccine.

You didn't know that the Metal Gear series is a true story, set in the future?

This is fantastic, I look forward to how these guys make out of this new discovery.

I thought it was like a long, long time ago. But somehow set in the future.

I had heard that certain strands in stem cells were already found to cure HIV, but they're very rare and only found in certain parts of Europe or something. A guy who was being treated for something with them who also had HIV was shown that all signs of both ailments had disappeared. But if they can do it with reconstructing algae DNA, that'd be pretty sweet, too.

Any metal gear fan knows that Metal Gear is set in the future, and Solid Snake is Kyle Reese Posted Image and since kyle was born in 2002, that means he is 8 years old now.
Snake is about 27 in his first game, so therefore 19 years from now we will be cloning super soldiers. If MACHINES don't kill us first

He had leukemia and received a stem cell transplant into his bone marrow from a donor with a gene mutation to the CCR5 receptor. This receptor is one of two on the CD4 cell that HIV needs to attach to in order to replicate. The mutation prevents HIV (or anything else, but I'm not sure about that) from attaching, thus the virus is unable to reproduce. The problem with this case is I have not been able to find any record stating he has been taken off of his HIV meds since the treatment. Granted, it is normal for an HIV positive person to have a small flare up in their viral load from time to time, even while on meds, but not knowing whether or not he's still on meds really doesn't prove or disprove anything. There's also the fact that current HIV detection technology cannot detect a viral load of 48 cells or less. He could still have HIV, but the treatment has done something so drastic as to keep it from replicating within these two years. And who knows how long that would last.
