I'm rarely one to question convention, but my birds merit party last night got me thinking.

I was using polearm and parsing myself against a SAM who was using GKT. Now, my polearm build sucks (no merits, no tomoe, a bunch of haste sacrificed for a capped hit rate). Nevertheless, I was ahead by a small margin (I think 38% to 35%). Anyway, I didn't realize until I got there I would be the main assist and should've grabbed more crab sushi. After I ran out of food, I switched to GKT and restarted the parse. By the end of the party, with everything else constant (to my knowledge), I was parsing about 43% and the other SAM was down around 30%.

So my question: We always say polearm or GTFO for birds, but if I'm interpreting my parse correctly, is a strong GKT build better than a weak polearm build even without the piercing bonus?

You answered your own question.

Using PA opens up Penta, 5 hit and Piercing bonus...

If your haste is low, the 5 hit isn't even much of an improvement over a 6 hit GK.
If you have a shitty weapon and miss a lot, the 1.25x bonus dmg isn't going to help.
If your att is low from putting up more acc, penta will suffer.

Just work on your polearm build. Eventually it'll jump way ahead, with simple gear implementation.

Polearm is samurai's way of taking advantage of favorable circumstances.

Circumstances aren't favorable? Don't use polearm.
