New Player Coming Back To FFXI

Man, it's been nearly 5 years since I've played this game. I recently moved to an area that has nothing but two-way Satellite internet so WoW is out of the question. I remember this game running well on dial-up so I figure Satellite could handle it ok. I wonder if any of the players that I played with even play anymore: Empress, Ardiem, Tiny, Tyronite. I'm looking to come back, and the social aspect of this game is what kept me hooked. Looking to get back in touch with old friends and join their Linkshell, if possible, or to join up with other old players that are starting fresh. Regardless of what I used to be, I'm not a mature player looking for fun, laid back group of people to play the game with again. Hopefully, FFXI isn't TOO dead yet.

So is the player base dead, or just this website?

To be really blunt, if you want to start over on a MMO avoid FFXI.

I don't want to call the game dead, but you'll be spending a lot of time in your mog house staring at your moogle with your flag raised.

most anyone that was playing when you did has already quit. getting ptys can be hard. be prepared to solo a lot.

That is disheartening. Maybe I'll just stick with WoW until FFXIV comes out. I'm sure that most of the old player base will come back for that, IF Square's customer service doesn't get anymore abysmal than it already is.

I play on Asura, there's still thousands of people on at any given time. Finding a party is as annoying as ever, but with the new level sync feature it isn't so bad. End game is alive and thriving. Getting to 75 is going to be your main problem. Just make as many friends as possible, and don't be picky about level sync pts.

Perhaps it is time to come back on my words and eat them.

Reading all over with all the updates that have been going on the biggest worries for a starting player are:
- Leveling
- Getting Gil

Both require a bit of time, but if you played the game before it shouldn't be too hard to roll into.
Also having a few friends that still play may prove a big help because getting to the level where you can start farming or H.E.L.M. reliably isn't that expensive to sponsor.

Mission wise you should actually be fine these days.
With the level caps being lifted on CoP resulting in most of the CoP expansion having become solo content up until the airship.
(I guess some jobs would even be able to solo that at level 80, although time might be an issue there.)
And getting help for the missions after those should not be an issue either.
