So... you cant get both unless u shell out $125 for both? ya the Onion helm would be way better for endgame/events/etc. but enhanced skillup for your entire ff14 career? keeping in mind skillup sounds the same for both weaponskill//magic//crafting//fishin for every Class

--Edit-- Unless we assume "Standard Pre-Order" isn't meaning just the "Standard Pre-Order gets it" but Each pre-order gets it? Because the basic one is called "Standard"
Pricing: Standard Edition $49.99 | Collector's Edition $74.99

I thought they would steer away from the extra money per character but instead they made them more expensive? I don't understand. :/

What gets me is how there's no Collector's Edition for the PS3. I mean, that's going to be a sizable chunk of the player base given how XIII handed out Beta codes, but to not give them a Collector's Edition for their system? I could care less about the Onion Helm, it's the other more tangible stuff I want to check out. Sigh... to get a laptop adequate enough to run XIV would cost alot... and I do so HATE Windows.

Releasing it at the start of Uni wasn't a good idea to draw me in, SE.

So can someone who's played the Alpha maybe cue me in to why I'd even what to play 14? Not really heard anything good about it yet. The combat system must be skull-fuck-amazing or something.

Because good is an arbitrary word that's based on your own experience. What are you looking for to make it good and I can tell you.

So that's the US and Canada for retailers, but what about Europe? D: Can't seem to find any info regarding that on the UK or German website.

Like Varizen said, you have to base it off your own experience. If you want something to start out with, I love the convenience of not having to form a group of people just to get one simple 5 minute thing done. The user interface does feel similar to FFXI, so you will get into the game very quickly. From what I read, I could be wrong, the developers made a system where you can que to join a random party to do guildleves, so kind of convenient if you do not have any friends, think I read it somewhere on FFXIVcore.

SE is right, this is bringing in the more casual crowd into the game, and hardcore players also. I can imagine people still preferring FFXI over this for reasons unknown, but I am still on the train for FFXIV since I cancelled my FFXI account anyhow. But you should at least give it a chance, or find a friend getting the collector's edition and let you use his buddy pass. :o

Same policy for Europe, Sep.22 for Collectors, Sep.30 for regular. US, Europe, and Japan come out the same day. Maybe a few hour difference on who gets on first, but who cares. :P

That wasn't what I meant. The OP has a link to the retailers who are already offering both FFXIV editions for preordering, but the German retailers (Amazon.de, Gamestop.de) don't have it, yet. So I was wondering if there were other official European retailers who'd already take orders for FFXIV.

Edit:

If you are only annoyed by this because you wanted extra chars for item-holding: If you create a new account, you get a so-called "retainer" in addition to your first character for free, who is a pure mule for items. Additional characters cost $3, additional retainers only $1 (like FFXI, basically)

Ahh, beats me then. I would check on a consistent basis so you can make sure to reserve it. I was the first one to reserve it at my Gamestop, and sure it hasn't gone higher than that since. :P

I keep thinking I want to create multiple characters, but then I keep remembering the hassle in an MMO to have more than one if you don't actually 2 box them. Especially in the FF series where you can play all jobs. I guess it's more so to have 2 different stat builds this time around.

If you order the standard edition, you just get the helm, you order the collectors edition, you get both.

Clarification about the monthly prices according to Massively.com:
  • $12.99 a month for the account and ONE PLAYABLE character
  • $3.00 a month for each ADDITIONAL PLAYABLE character on the SAME account
  • $1.00 a month for each ADDITIONAL NON-PLAYABLE character on the SAME account; in other words, a storage mule like in FFXI

Actually, they never explicitly state there's only 1 character by default for the $12.95. There's much speculation it'll be different on the Beta forums as they're giving us 3 characters per account in Beta.

Of course,as I said... this is speculation for the commercial.
