So looks like Blizzard is taking the first step in changing how forums work:

Looks like they're sick of the trolling, flame wars and other nonsense, so instead now anyone who posts will have to use their real life name (and possibly the character)

Could this be the start of something very good, or very bad?

It sounds like a good idea, but being a privacy / security-minded individual, I'd be worried about using these.

Could other MMOs (Final Fantasy) be next?

I remember showing a fool on those forums what I could do with his email address, he posted it up on Mal'Ganis forums....I sent him an instant message with his real name, address, etc, and showed him I could've taken over his account as well, if I wanted to.

He quickly removed his post.


Real name is just as bad, especially if you get a location out of someone.

Who didn't see this coming? One of the satisfactions of MMO's is people not knowing who you really are. This was a terrible idea from the beginning, and knew people would go out of their way to stop it.

Not surprising, the forums went berserk when news got out. The blue post on the NA forums got 2500 pages worth of bitching, the EU one significantly less but still overwhelmingly against the idea.

It was bullshit anyway, I fail to see what benefits there were from the idea.

I understand their need to find a way to control the trolls. They made your character's profile public and that drastically increased the trolling because they'd find or invent something about your character to poke fun of. I admit that i've done my share of trolling on the forums, but it wasn't because of pubic-displayed information but because of plain, obvious stupidity. Like this one guy who posted about being skilled at WoW, PVP, etc but wore blues/greens, had the most stupid/random spec i've ever seen and glyphed for talents he didn't even have. Plus specialized in swords when he used axes. Smart people know that you don't post on the official WoW forums if you're looking for information about WoW (strange concept, eh?).

Anyway, is it worth people knowing my real name? No, not really. Heck, WoW forums have many times more people than KI and there are a couple people on KI who i'd bet if they knew who I was would stare in my windows and jack off... don't want more stalkers.
