So I'm preordering Final Fantasy XIV and as I've heard, it comes with a security token. I've never used one (or any variation) of these, and so I'm debating whether or not to use it. Is inputting a one-time password simply a hassle or is it worth it to use? Please don't flame me for being "lazy" or anything, I'm just simply weighing the pros and cons. In past MMOs I've always had my username and password saved on the login screen so all I had to do was press play, which really was a convenience.

I've never before had a problem with hackers. In the past, and I'm not too clear on how hackers get your information either, so that might have something to do with why I don't really understand why a security token is really necessary.

I also would like to know what is the case if a security token is misplaced.

Thanks a lot :)

Considering all the people who have been hacked, it is totally worth it.

The main way hackers obtain your log ins is a small program called a key logger, which they plant into your PC in some way or another. Usually, through the game's fan sites and forums. This logs each key you press and in what program/field, and then sends the data back to the hacker. A security token creates a new passcode each time, so even if they had your log ins, they wouldn't be able to log in to you account through the game.

And if you lose a security token, you can order a new one. For a small fee of course.

I never had any problems with my account being hacked or stolen in XI, but I still got a security token. Admittedly it was partially for the mog satchel, but it doesn't hurt knowing that a hacker would have to figure out two passwords AND a randomly generated one to get on. You don't have to use it, but on the flipside, at least you'll have one if XIV starts getting hit by hackers as badly as XI has.

I lose that fucking thing every day. Aside from that, it's not such a big deal, you get used to it.

Hmm alright, well it's better to be safe than sorry. I never knew hacks were a major problem in XI (I guess I was one of the lucky ones!). I'll have to work something out for a place to put it so I can keep track of it. I lose everything <_<

It's not just XI. WoW is just as bad if not worse. WoW even has massive Phishing scams where they mass e-mail people who don't even know what WoW is.

I bought mine mainly for the satchel, but the added layer of security is really nice, would make it very difficult for anyone to hack, unless they had a way to produce the timed algorithim needed to generate the new password. As far as logging in each time it is not a big hassle, considering once you are logged in you need not continue to re-input a new password periodically. I put mine on a dogtag chain, not to wear, but to hang in a visual place near my PC.

Good thinking. I'll try that, thanks :)

They're worth it if you're a god damn idiot with no brain that still uses internet explorer, and/or give your password out thinking everyone is your friend.
