FCC Legalizes Jailbreaking Cellular Providers Drop Loads in Their Pants
#1

In a bold, weird, and out of left field decision, the FCC created new regulations legalizing jail-breaking and hacking of cell phones - most notably smart phones. Apple, the biggest opponent of the FCC's decision, had argued that jail-breaking was a form of copyright infringement (huh?). However, the FCC disagreed and said that the practice could only improve a customer's experience with their device (no fucking duh), and that jail-breaking falls under the fair-use act. This new measure also allows the installation of software not approved by the manufacturers or service providers. The only two downsides to this are that manufacturers can still make it hard or even prevent their product from being tampered with and it will still void your warranty.
Additionally, students, teachers/professors, and film makers can by-pass DVD DRM for nonprofit purposes. Computer users can now legally bypass dongles (which aren't really used any more). And now, consumers can bypass DRM on video games - but only to investigate and correct security flaws. This only pertains to video games, and not other computer software.
All in all, it looks like the government - or at least someone in the government - is finally starting to get it.

They were probably thinking that people are going to do it anyways illegal or not.

Actually, it was more like no one was being prosecuted or sued for doing it anyway.

Me: Sup guys. My phone broke and I can't seem to get it back to normal. Tried resetting it and all that jazz.
Apple: Oh? Let me take a look at it. Wait a minute... this is a jail broken phone?
Me: Yes sir! It's legal now!
Apple: Your warranty is void. You will pay $400 up front for me to even look at the device.
Me: What?!! Bullshit!

This.
I work for Sprint Nextel, and if you tamper with your phone the warranty is void. So if you fucked it up during or after the tamper there isn't shit we can do as far as fixing it. Stupid fucks think giving them a new phone is free to the store. No- not in the slightest. Flip phones no camera retail 199.99. The low prices are from entering into a contract. I have to explain this everyday I work =/ including today... (at work now XD)

I take solace knowing I get a free iPhone if my current one breaks. I just pay $15/mo to BestBuy as an on-going warranty protecting it from all sorts of stuff. The only thing it doesn't cover is water damage. But the clerk can't call you a liar, so even if he shakes it and 20 gallons of water pour out of the iPhone, you can tell him it's natural-forming condensation as the result of it being hot outside and cold inside. Which he had to do when I was getting mine. I wanted to slap that asshole because it wasn't just water. It was beer all in his iPhone. sigh...
And you get a new one.
Which is good because I already paid half a grand for my iPhone 3GS and all the jazz to go with it. I'll be damned if I'm paying that again.
When my lil' Bardiche dies I will replace him with Bardiche II and continue our adventure with his ghost.

Somehow, I sincerely doubt people are actually calling you because of hardware issues.

Level 1 customer support ≠ a warranty claim.

Warrantys are only meant to cover defects that were not cause by the user. Sadly, most idiots don't look at a warranty that way, they think it is a magical ticket that will grant them a "brand new" electronic in returning your defective one you either dropped, got water damage, stolen, set on fire, hacked into and didn't work out too well, or warranty is at the end date and want a new one anyways. I hate it when I go into the Verizon store and I see idiots taking all day while I am sitting there waiting for my turn complaining that their warranty apparently claimed they she is entitled for a replacement even though she clearly fucked up that phone on her own. The sad thing is, some idiots know how warranties work and decide to act ignorant about it.
......LOUD NOISES!!!
I actually like how a lot of PC related companies handle their warranties today, even though they are expensive as hell. HP and Lenovo offer protection services on their machines, which is something irresponsible college students need! This is one case where if you were an idiot with your laptop, you are still covered.

Once again.. are you kidding me? This isn't flamewars. Chill out. This is a oxymoron. I work at Sprint. I deal with ETF's daily. Early Termination Fees are used when customers breach their contract. It has absolutely nothing to do with getting a replacement phone. =/
Edit: To make that clearer. That only means when canceling early or not paying your bill.
@Velhart you are 100% right. Honestly though, most people get it if I break it down for them but you get some people who lose it.
I PAID $100 FOR THIS PHONE AND IT IS ONLY 4 MONTHS OLD I WANT A BRAND NEW ONE.
Lmfao, honestly to make those ones shut up we tell them they are getting a new one and give them the refurbished one anyway. Take it or leave it. However, if they are especially annoying, we will just stand there and argue with them until they leave. (That gets fun =D)

ooo...i remember one call...fuck i hated the bitch...
her parents bought her wii fit plus the christmas before (this was in september) she never opened wii fit plus till now, and it wasnt working, i repeatedly tried to get her to do troubleshooting, but she just kept bitching that it wasnt going to do anything...finally, i gave up, and started offering her non warranty repair options (cuz wii fit plus only has a 90 day warranty) she expected me to give her warranty repairs just because she hadnt opened it till now...i ended up going to a supervisor, he told me free repair, whatever...went back to her, offered her free repair...she said no, she wanted a new one...said no, then went back to supervisor...he said sure, do an advance replacement, not necessarily new, but, she wont have time without wii fit plus (which is fucking retarded, she didnt open it for...9-10 months) i offered her that, she finally shut up, and i did it, went to lunch...when i came back, i still had her file open...i checked it again, and my advance replacement order had been cancelled, i wtf'd, and looked into the notes...AFTER she hung up...she tried the troubleshooting i kept informing her about...and the fucking thing worked...

lmfao. Oh my god. I worked at RadioShack before this. I completely can relate.
One of my instances, I had a guy come in with an old tape recorder. He said it didn't work and he wanted to return it. So he set the device on the counter. So I asked him his he had the receipt. He said "No man, who the fuck keeps that shit." (First of all swearing annoys me to no end so I was all ready bugged but..) I politely tell him not a problem sir let me re-print it. So I spend 5 minutes or so and look it up. I print it and go ok good it was purchased 28 days ago I can return it for you. Do you have the box? He responds.. NO MAN I TOLD YOU I DONT KEEP THAT SHIT. So I told him "Sir, you have to have the box. How are we going to re-sell or return this to the manufacturer?" he responded with attitude now Well, first of all young man it doesn't say I need the box, second YOU MAKE THE BOXES SO GO MAKE ONE. I smirked ont he inside (I loved it when people challenged me) I took out a bright orange sharpie and highlighted where it said... MUST HAVE ORIGINAL PACKAGING AND MATERIAL TO RETURN. Needless to say he stared at me dumbfounded, and then said go make me a box. I smiled and said "Sir, not to be rude but this isn't the north pole we don't MAKE anything in the back. They come from a manufacturer. We just sell them. How many times do you goto a car dealership and there is a factory behind it pumping out cars?" He then nodded twice took a deep breath and threw it on the ground snapping it in half. He then said "Ok take it back now." I said Now it's broken not only can I not take it back but now you can't use it. So he stomped on it some more. Picked up his cassette and acted like he was going to throw it at me, and left. =D lawl people are dumb
** I work in Detroit. People are crazy hostile. I have probably a 1,000 of these stories

yeah...i liked what one of my temporary co-workers asked a lady during christmas...
the lady's daughter dropped her ds lite, and broke the hinge, it was within warranty, so we were willin to give her a 25 dollar discount on the repair...she wanted a new one, not her broken one repaired...this is what my co-worker said...
"m'am, lets say you just bought a new car...now, if you wrapped it around a tree, would you go to the manufacturer asking them for a new car because of something you did?"
when she said no, he asked her why she was trying to do it to us >.>

Three and three hundred? Yes, that is quite a lot. After all it's not like Sprint has thousands of customers or something. Besides, my comment wasn't really about whether or not people fuck their shit up - which they do - it was more about the fact that Sprint/Nextel's service is akin to a steaming pile of rectal warts. Your company is bleeding out subscribers like a chest wound (last quarter, Sprint lost damn near one million to the competition). And before you go, "Well, I always take care of my customers. I give them nothing but the best service! How dare you!!!" I can only assume that you do, but remember: you're the exception, not the rule.

Yes, you mentioned replacing phones, but when that customer blows up at you and wants to cancel, guess how the company makes the money back. And I know you've had to deal with that. Any CSR for a telecommunications company has had to deal with situations like that.

I did TS for 2 cable providers. I couldn't stand getting the lazy people. They always wanted a tech to come out instead of holding down a power button. Went easy when I told them if they don't try the trip will cost them. Best I got was a guy looking for a channel (GUIDE BUTTON IDIOT!) he started punching the channel number into his phone, I said "Sir try inputting the channel on your remote control."

Haha. Tech support for cable HSI would be simple if people weren't so damn stupid and lazy.
