how come archer gets quivers on their backs for arrows,
but lancers don't get a small circle brace like Fang does in final fantasy 13 to hold our lances!
ONCE AGAIN. the polearm is just going to be on our backs with nothing too hold it!
they need to change this NOW while it is in beta! who agrees with me?!

in the picture, even costume designers for cosplay were smart enough to have a belt with a holder on it...
why cant SE be smart enough to add this design in the game..

Because it doesn't matter. And seldom in history did soldiers actually carry lances around when they were out of battle, so there's no real-world basis for the concept to make it something they worry about all the time. Lack of a quiver on an archer is something you'd notice -- lack of a back rack for a lance not so much so, considering they'd either carry it on their shoulder/hands or in a weapon's wagon/trailer or something.

its still the realism of it. having something just float on your back? com'on now.
what about when/if they release samurai. they used sheaths, do they not get one of those for the great katana?

When you synth a lot of the weapons, a "xxxxx Strap" is included in the recipe. Therefore, there's a strap for shoulder slings and the like, it's just not visible. Like Fishing line.

Yeah but figure also you should be able to kill a star marmot with one thrust and then eat its flesh on the go but it ain't that real. I'm gonna rage though if great katanas are fucking upside down again and have no seaths

Blade Side up when in Sheath.

I think it really depends on the style of the time. Some eras had different blade styles and sheath etiquette.

I always assumed that was for storage only. The way Tenzen stores it looks kind of annoying.

It's held that way due to the style of drawing the sword. You can, for example, draw upwards then slash downwards, or turn the sheath and sword to the side a bit for a more or less horizontal slash (Iaido), as far as I remember.

Shits upside down

I shall explain this.. although I know it has no reference at all to the game..

Very well.. During the Heian period (from 782 to 1180..) the katana was worn with the dull side of the blade facing up, that style is called Tachi configuration.. the Tachi was a longer and additionally curved than a Katana, usually worn by cavalry, wearing it that way made it easier to extract the sword while mounting an horse...
Then during the Muromachi period (from 1392 to 1573..) the Tachis were revisited and adapted to infantry use and effectively called Katana.. the newly producted blades were shorter and less curved.. therefore they were no longer worn in Tachi configuration but Uchikatana (with the sharp side of the blade facing up..) and many old Tachi were shortened and transformed into Katana..

So.. after all.. the GK weapon skills' names in FFXI were all called "Tachi:" so I believe that implies the sword the Samurai is using being a Tachi.. therefore worn in Tachi configuration.. :D

Putting it in blade up also helps keep the edge sharp, leading to fewer sharpening sessions and a longer over all life for the blade. You have a natural tendency as you're sheathing the weapon to let it's weight rest on the sheath a sit slides in. If it were blade down you'd be dulling your weapon for nothing, and also eating into your sheath. Not to mention running the risk of snagging your blade in the wood (depending on design) and getting yourself killed in the worst case scenario, looking like a fool in the best.

Of course there are ways to wear it blade down and circumvent some of those issues, but usually at the cost of dulling your blade as it enters or exits the sheath. I'd never considered most of that myself until I learned to properly maintain a katana, but it's become part of my general edged tool/weapon care procedure. Proper/period styling and wear be damned, sharpening anything longer than 6" is a pain in the ass and I don't own dull showpieces anymore.

Edit: Oh, and if we're going for realism on the lance deal...it would be slung over the shoulder like the other guy said. I've no real issue with "floating" weapons though. From what I've gathered this game is gonna be hard enough on the average PC without getting all nit picky about tiny details like that scabbards and other weapon holsters. Their absence annoying sure, but not as annoying as the lag that could come with their presence. A sheath or pole/axe strap may be a small thing, but in a densely populated city market it has the potential to wreak havoc.

you want realism? fine your gk breaks on the third time it hits bone and you can lose your lance by getting it stuck into a mob

I am not really fussed about the whole pole-arm thing. But this:
