I figure most of the people who are going to play the Beta already have it downloaded but, I just got a key from a friend so now I'm downloading it on my computer. I made sure my Norton was off, nothing else was opened, and I created a partition on my hard drive using FAT32. I don't know what else to really check or fix.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you.

What OS are you using? If you're using Vista you need to open ports. There's a tutorial on the Beta forums.

Took me about 17 hours to DL and install the beta fresh. The primary file is 15gigs and is about 99.2% of the download. Sounds like I got it faster than alot of people on the beta forum, and for some crazy reason, I can log into, read, and report stuff on the forum, but I can't seem to post stuff nor get it to remember what I changed the SN to after the random one they give you.

wow, that is extremely long. My friend downloaded onto his mac and did it in about 2 hours. I'd be happy with a 6 hour download.

Okay then unless you already have your ports opened it will be ungodly slow, even then it could depend on seeders since the DL is a torrent.

Which ports are you talking about, not the UPnP things? I've just followed the Download Instructions from the beta testing site. The only step i can't fully complete is the 9th one dealing with UPnP

Download any Torrent program (uTorrent works best, afaik), then go to Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\bca2a8ae\metainfo and Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\metainfo and download all Torrents in those directories. Then place those downloaded files in the respective Patches folders.
Sadly, i do not remember if any of those files are not to be placed in those folders, just download for now and ask me, telling me the file names, maybe I'll remember/know where to put them.
In any case, after placing the files in there, start the Updater and it should recognize the files and skip the slow updating process.

What kind of internet do you have? Dial up? DSL? Broadband (1mbps, 2mbps, etc.)?

Comcast. I'm thinking the problem might be my router, it's old. I'm going to try direct connecting and see how that goes

You need to set up Port Forwarding.

First, go to:

Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads

Open up the upnp_port_mapping file. There will be a 5 digit port number in there, keep that handy. After that, log into your router, and set up port forwarding with the port number from earlier. If you don't know how to log into your router, google the directions for the default password and how to log into your specific router, the answers are usually spot on. If you don't know how to set up port forwarding, follow the steps for logging into your router, but search for port forwarding instead.

Is this because it's downloading from the internet and not a disk? (Will i need to do this say if i was downloading the actual game and not the beta?)
I'll try this tomorrow morning. Thanks everyone for suggestions.

Edit: Just to show how slow this download has been. (Keep in mind complete new computer all hardware is above the recommended specs to run FFXIV) Upload speed peeks around 160kb/s Download peeks at 35kb/s but it usually sits around 0 for a while and then jumps up. It's only 54% and it's been 20+ hours.

It's because it's shared P2P and not straight from SE's servers. If you've ever downloaded WoW, it's the exact same problem and exact same fix.

To anyone having trouble with what I said earlier:

If you post what router you have (specific model please, not just "it's a linksys"), I can pretty easily whip up a guide for you if your google-fu is weak.

LOL, that was funny.

For me, I just turned of the windows firewall in 7, and went from 10-50kb/s to 1.1-1.3Mb/s as well.

My router is old and about to die. I found an article for the model that was published this year, said I should strongly reconsider replacing it ahaha. The guide on the Beta Download site is really simple if you have windows 7 or vista, I'm just going to upgrade to 7 in the next week or so.

And for some reason my download speed kicked up to 157kb/s this morning out of no where. Didn't touch a thing.
