My buddy and I want to play one month of FFXI until FFXIV comes out. Unfortunately there is some bullshit that you need a 3-D secure card to be able to play? I am not going to sign up for a brand new credit card just to play FFXI. If this is what one must do then no wonder this crappy game has lost so many people.

Get a prepaid from WalMart, and there's also a good chance SE will put 3DS in XIV.

I don't understand why this is necessary. I have never heard of this before and it seems ridiculous. If FFXIV has the same method of payment then I will be very upset.

It's because of the RMT problem ffxi had that nearly destroyed the game. Blame China.

ninja edit: Your mom is a crappy game. inb4 "my mom is dead" and then kenshiro replying with some sort of necrophiliac retort.

Pretty much sums it up.

On JP Button there was a topic about this. According to SE it was because RMT were somehow getting credit card numbers and using them to create accounts, which was probably the cause of double charges.

EDIT: For the article about it: http://jpbutton.bluegartr.com/?p=3613

Shame SE doesn't post this kind of information on the official site every now and then.

Now to actually be useful: The 3-D secure from Mastercard and Verified by Visa don't require you to actually get a new card. They're free extra security additions to your card for use in making online purchases. You need to check with your bank to see if they're available. If you're with Chase, you may have some problems, but any other major bank, you should be fine. I've yet to get it, but I'm with US Bank, and I know they support Verified by Visa.

Sometimes it can be blind luck to. For example back when I played I used my card til I took a one month break, came back and it refused my card to the 3D secure thing, but took my parent's just fine. Which is odd since we use the same bank.

When did you open your account Cor? The age at which you opened your account could have an effect. I went and updated my bank account when I was 21. When you're 18 they put a LOT of limitations on what you can do with your account (they actually have an entirely separate list of accounts 18 year olds can make) and because banks are out to screw people over, they don't update the account unless you come down and do it yourself.

Well when I first played I used my parents since I was still in school however once I got work I switched over to my credit card (this was back before the 3DS system) which I used from then til the issue happened (Jan. 2010). After which I was forced to use my parent's again.

Maybe I didn't register it for 3DS (Which IIRC takes 24 hours to activate?) however I swore I could have since I used it often to buy things off the net.
