Amnesia: The Dark Descent Horror game

A grizzling horror game with the basic premise; The game casts the player in the role of Daniel, a young man from London, who awakens in the dark halls of Brennenburg Castle with little to no memories about himself or his past. All that he can remember is his name and that something is hunting him.

Sounds very basic, but hot-dang, this looks really good! It looks pretty freaky... I wonder if there is a way to combat those things chasing you.

Has anyone else heard of this game? Played it, even? If you have any opinions, share them here.

This game kind of reminds me of Hellnight/Dark Messiah.

A Youtuber I follow closely called Helloween has played all of these games, and is currently playing Amnesia. Definitely a good buy.

It's not looking too bad so far, though evading the enemy seems a tad easy. Not too keen on their overuse of events that leave you without the vast quantities of tinderboxes you pick up. The atmosphere is there though, which is all it really needs. Definitely one of those games that only works once.

Agreed. Infact this whole evade the enemy thing has kind of been done already in the Penumbra series I believe.

It's been done a few times, with little success. Hellnight (as Rhayve mentioned) was a terrible game for the PS1, most of the difficulty/tension was created by making your character take several minutes to pull a 180. Run Like Hell was also a terrible game, this time for the PS2. Originally meant to follow a similar formula as Hellnight, it was changed repeatedly during development but still retained sequences that utilised the same concept.

Amnesia gets rid of most these issues, though upon catching sight of my first enemy I was instantly reminded of the Hellnight monster and simply sprinting away was sufficient to escape. The only time I seem to be in any danger of dying is when they annoyingly spawn that red shit over doors to zones you've previously visited. Sanity doesn't play a major role either, only when a scripted event kicks in and robs you of your ability to light candles.

That isn't to say it's a bad game, I've enjoyed the parts I've done so far, yet it sadly seems to fall apart when the creatures make an appearance. Most appear to spontaneously disappear after you've escaped them once which is kind of gay. Currently it rates as about average, we'll see how it goes later on.

Alan Wake is supposed to be quite good, not played it yet myself.

Dead Space is excellent if you haven't played it, waiting on the sequel.

Condemned was good, the sequel not so good, though still worth looking at I guess.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth was great.

The latest Alone in the Dark is... mediocre at best. What could have been a great game was ruined by clumsy controls that create the only difficulty in the game.

Basically, if you haven't played it, Dead Space is your best bet. CoC, then Condemned. I can't really think of any other stand-out titles, nobody really makes survival horror these days. Currently playing through Silent Hill: Homecoming, and intend to buy Alan Wake at some point in the near future, then I'm forced to wait for Dead Space 2. It'll totally be worth it though.

Well, I don't know what games you have played. But survival horror games that I thought were good were both Fatal Frame / Project Zero 2 and 3. Both caught me off guard more than a few times, I won't lie  I heard Dead Space was meant to be good as well.

Edit: Yep, Treelo beat me to it :P

or F.E.A.R. series.

Dead Space really didn't scare me, because I'm deaf and I don't hear any horror noises. I jumped a bit few times after some monsters jumped on me from somewhere. :P My older brother (he's not deaf,) told me that it really scared him out. When he was in an elevator, a woman suddenly screamed, horror noises came up, rumbles, and light kept turning out/on - that scared him out. So, it should be good horror game for you if you're not deaf. To be honest, I have enjoyed with playing this game. Looking forward to Dead Space 2.

EDIT:
And Alan Wake didn't scare me too. It was about sounds again I guess. It was just little intense. Like example, when I wandered a forest and I saw those clouds increased its movement and those tree branches moved wildly, I knew that those enemies are coming. I raised my controller and got prepared to kick their ass. Intense.

Damn, how could I forget FEAR? One of the few games that had me emptying not one, but two whole clips into nothingness in a state of sheer panic while backpedalling madly into a wall. The ending to the second one would have been fairly weak if it weren't for the fact it sets things up for another.

Doom 3 is old enough that if you've not played it you're not a fan of survival horror, but gets an honourable mention for being the only game to propel me sideways out of my chair thanks to a housemate and his girlfriend entering the room while I'm sat dangerously close to the TV with the sound blasting through our speaker system. If ever I was likely to have a heart attack that wasn't caused by my poor diet or love of chemical stimulants, it was then.

Alan Wake was a great mindfuck game. i never really found it to be scary, it was fairly predictable, but I loved the story.

Also, totally going to get Dead space. thanks guys!

Alan Wake was great, but for god's sake play it on hard mode. Normal mode gives you so much ammo and your enemies are such pussies that they never really pose a threat, and it takes a lot of the atmosphere away. Hard mode, however, makes the enemies enough of a threat that you'll quickly become afraid of seeing them simply because they're probably going to send you right back to the last checkpoint if you're not careful, and it's kinda necessary to inject that type fear into the game because the enemies themselves don't look particularly scary.

If you have a GameCube or Wii (or even a half decent computer that'll run a GC emulator), I strongly recommend the Resident Evil remake. It's probably the best and scariest of the old-fashioned survival horrors if you can get to grips with its controls, which are outdated by today's standards.

So I finished Alan Wake. Very enjoyable, though even on Hard it wasn't particularly challenging. The plot was excellent for the majority of the game though it stumbled a little towards the end in my opinion. The incessant cinematic warning you receive whenever enemies are approaching from behind detracted somewhat from the atmosphere and tension. It didn't take long for me to realise that creeping around checking every shadow with my torch was completely pointless. Still an excellent game though.

It finally made me complete Silent Hill 5 as well. After their initial stumble on revealing a rather important piece of information on a loading screen, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself suitably perplexed at the end of the game. Now to find out how to obtain the other endings since I'm almost certain I got the worst one. Not as good as the first two, but a welcome return to form after 3/4. My only real complaint would be that the targeting system locks on to stuff you can't actually see, which has the same detrimental effect as Alan Wake's slo-mo warnings.

Just finished FEAR 1 & 2. This 2# really scared the shit out of me several times and that ending blew me away. It's way scarier than Dead Space, because it has a lot of scary viewings (like I said I'm deaf) like Alma appears and wants a hug.

And I want to know which is best horror game with best SOUNDS? Dead Space or FEAR 2? I'm curious.
