After amassing a good 6 mobs all at like 1% hp to level my shield, i noticed that there seems to be a maximum amount of skill ups per a shield per a mob
3 skill ups and the shield would go dormant as a rank7/phy9 gladiator and it was sorta depressing since i couldn't buy a shield until 5. This is against mobs in the 1~4 range and some that are outside the lv10 zone in grandia. Anyone have any good tips or possibly experiences in speed leveling or gaining a good amount of shield skill?

Honestly I think your best bet is to just fight level apropriate stuff. When you block an attack you get awarded what? 30-50 skill points? Compare that to defeating a mob, where you can be awarded as much skill for your shield as you were for your sword. I think it might have something to do with how effectively the shield was used in battle as well. For example it looks like I get more experience for the shield when I'm actively using phalanx, vs when im not paying attention and just stabbing shit to death. I say looks because I'm just eyeballing this, I'm not really breaking out spreadsheets and keeping tabs.

I should probably worry a little more about my shield skill, especially since I got it late (rank 11). But eventually the shield skill will catch up, even if it happens after my gladiator reaches the rank cap.

I JUST got phalanx so i'll give that a try as well. After messing around the other day i finally noticed fighting level appropiate stuff really did help like you mentioned. Normally the things fought by my groups give crazy skill thanks to guardian aspect so i assumed shield would too but this time around shield pretty much makes a gladiator want to go back and fight EVERYTHING.


*edit* wow phalanx does help alot more. my skills pretty much doubled even on em and dc mobs
