I played FFXI about 4 years ago like it was my job. I got my whm to about 46, and my sam to about 37 before I stopped playing for WoW. But recently I can't get the thought of FFXI out of my head.

How different is it from 2006/7? Is it worth playing? Is the community still as it was back then?

People have different opinions about this game. Some love it, some hate it, some are stick caught in limbo about it.

I have yet to play it (but is really itching to), so I can't give you my personal opinion. If you want to try it, try it. Just remember, FF14 just came out and there's probably still a lot of bugs and fixes in there, with not a lot of content. I'm sure it'll turn into a great game, it just needs a little time.
