With topics like Are you having Fun? (be honest) and FFXIV and what was expected by you?, how do you see the future of XIV being?

Will it be like XI and have dedicated following after many years?
Will it catch on after a few more updates / patches, PS3 release, Next holiday season?

Already stoped playing, so horrible at it's current state.

"It's only gonna get better and better" should be reworded into "As the game gets better more and more people will join" or something like that. People are likely going to vote it's going to get better without thinking about it simply because MMOs always get better, it's a given. But that doesn't answer the question of whether or not FFXIV has what it takes to stand the test of time. Even the worst MMO ever released (FFXIV) will get better if there's still updates taking place, it's hardly going to get worse. Whether the game will always be a piece of crap or not even with years of getting better is another matter entirely.

At the current state it's sh*t, but once PS3 comes around the game should be fine. Unless SE manages to screw up somewhere else again.

I'm trying to think of some MMOs that failed the test of time.

Aion was fun in the betas and up to level 30, after that it crashed and burned.
Vanguard was horrible, like FFXIV, incomplete when it released and I dont know if it ever recovered.
Age of Conan flopped, the combat was fun though.
Lord of the Rings online was so bad that it went free to play about a year after release.
Dungeons and Dragons online was a joke from the beginning
FFXIV... only time will tell

I think SE has too big of an ego to let FFXIV die as early as people say it will lol. In my opinion, it will go the way of FFXI if it don't get in to shape by, if not before, the PS3's version.

Or maybe I'm being too optimistic, I don't know.

People have been predicting the 'death' of FFXI for over 3 years, and its still going strong. The only reason numbers are dipping a bit is because people are giving FFXIV a shot, and that has expired already for many.

going strong? it has been slowly dieing since Aht urhagan.

then the server merge.

when you are on a server that was 3k-5k after merge now 1.1-2k yeah i question strong
(now abyssa makes it anti new gamer)

and i know a lot of people that played FFXIV and stopped so i dought FFXI slowed because of FFXIV.

and a good part of FFXI dieing off has to do with SEs actions in the game, all the credit card banings, gardening, and salvage was stupid.

with how SE has been acting lately though FFXIV and FFXI, they have some good ideas, acting on them is poor and some actions are poor.

if they do not shape up the company may die as a whole.
As for FFXIV it is on the route to death, SE needs to shape up and put a ton of work to step it off that path, I see the chance of that being low.

In the current direction:
Will peak at ps3 release then die off.

is the best vote for me.

FF14 is going to die, they did it wrong plain and simple. I really don't think it will last long, sure the servers will be online but not many will play. FF11 was pretty bad at the start, but there wasn't much competition back then and SE was able to slowly(very slowly) make the game better. If they didn't add level sync, lower the total exp needed to level from 50+, make soloing possible for most people, etc... I don't think the game would still be around. If you compare ff11 to how it was way back for america release most people would comment how much easier and better the game has gotten. Unfortunately ff11 is dying due to SE keeping the ps2 limitation crap and not changing the game even more. Imagine if ffxi got a bit of a graphics boost and a ui update, would make a worlds difference. On a side note, makes me wonder though, are there any players who still use PS2?

I stopped playing on PS2 when the TOAU expansion went to stores and the back page of the manual was missing which had the registration codes. It resulted in a recall of all copies in the area (south/central California) and they were never re-distributed. They also never released an "Ultimate Collection" for PS2, only xbox and PC.

That's because trying to shelf PS2 titles is getting more and more difficult.

Also, ROFL @ people thinking PS2 will kill the game.

While i agree to some of this post the fact is FF11 has gotten so easy for someone like me who played very hardcore that i find there is no challenge in the game anymore because of these "easy" changes. While you address the better overall playing for casual gamers it in fact took away from the very challenge I desired to find in an MMO. I don't think fighting the same wyrm over and over for years is something that should be said as a great idea but the fact the wyrm went from 6 hours fight with cannon fodder to maybe 20 minutes or less now is shit for said challenge. This Wow crowd generation of "its my money and you do it how i want" has in fact ruined my generation of "challenge and playability" to the MMO community.

Voted "Haven't even tried it".
At this rate, I probably won't ever try it. So much negativity...all of which seems justified.
Maybe SE can fix things so it can become a decent MMO, but I'm not holding my breath.

The reason why I bring up PS2 is because its largely what killed the game(I mean, its still alive, but its on life support lol). Upgrading the graphics, the models, the special effects, the ui, the HUGE inventory problem that most of us who had more than 4-5 active jobs at 75 faced... All those problems were pretty much due to PS2 limitations. Its ridiculous how many methods we have of storing 80 items and how crappy the interface is of browsing through all of them. Upgrading any of that wont do any good at this point, people left and people are gone and people wont really be coming in.

Anyways, I do hope they fix 14, without 14 they would have no real online game to maintain anymore(they've moved most of the ffxi staff away from ffxi and without 14, makes me wonder what they would do). I'm not going to play it again though, I tried it and it was just way too horrible for a company who has so many years of MMO experience.

The thing is it would take forever to rewite all the coding just to appeal to some people crying about graphics and other crap. I'll admit the inventory is an issue, but that's why I prioritize.

I think XIV will shape up for PS3 release; after then, who knows?

I think I'm done with Final Fantasy as a whole if Versus turns out to be more about action and not about story, character and exploration like previous installments. Square-Enix should just turn the series over to Mistwalker.

End thread. Stuffing an MMO onto a console to get more people playing is gonna fuck you in the long run.....there's more flexibility in PC-only. Once I heard XIV was a PS3 title, I pretty much figured they'd have issues.

Congrats, Square. Everyone's got a fucking computer....let em learn how to use it if they want to play an MMO.
