As part of a final term paper, I need to conduct a survey that asks the question:
What are your 3 favorite films based off of video games and what 1-2 do you feel were the worst?
If you could please help me out by replying that would be awesome. Below is a list of the movies that were produced by studios for international release.

Faves:
Silent HIll (may not have had the "wow" factor, but it was a competent film)
Mortal Kombat
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within (if you can get past the fact that it had NOTHING to do with FF, it's a decent movie)
And the rest are cinematic abortions.

I do not have much backround with those.
All i can say is doom is your typical shooter, the movie took after the game concpets farily well to make its own stroyline from it.
the FF movie was good but it hardly had any FF elements in it. I say FF unlimited did a better job in taking the game elements into a story ( even though that is a series not a movie)
that movie did bomb because of that problem with FF fans so im not sure how to answer your question in that regard.
what about stuff that put its hands in everything like dragonballz? it went into a movie and has vidio games and the anime series.
The only reason I am talking like this and not answering your question directly is because I dont have enough background to properly answer it.
I vaguly remember the Mario movie and i think the ninja turtles would be a good one to list too no?

Super Mario Bros. - As bad as the movie is, it is still highly entertaining.
Silent Hill - Very good movie and had a nice creepy tone to it. Plus Pyramid Head = Awesome
Prince of Persia - The movie was pretty decent. A high quality film for one based on a video game.

I never realized until now how there's never really been a video game movie I liked that much D:
Agree with Vigilous though on FF. I was disappointed but once I got over the fact it was nothing like FF it's an alright movie and I'd say it holds the most artistic merit.
Next would be Mario Bros just for the sheer ridiculous awesome factor and then I suppose the Resident Evils have somewhat acceptable production values.

I actually didn't realize it until my wife made the observation. I always hated the movie, but she liked it. She had never played a FF game before having seen it, so I decided to watch it through her eyes, and yup, it's not that bad. If it was just called Spirits Within, nothing would have been lost.

Yar that was pretty much the same experience I had. First watch through I was totally disgusted and stayed pissed off at it for years then decided to re-watch one day knowing it wasn't truly a FF story and it actually has some pretty redeeming qualities. Definitely not award winning material but I also think it would have done better if they ditched the FF logo. Putting the FF in front probably just drove off a ton of people thinking "meh just a geeky video game movie" and then alienated people like us who were all like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!!!!!!1 RAAAAAAGE" into all but boycotting it. It would have been nice to see where SE would be today if Sakaguchi didn't quit
I think the worst video game movie of all time is Max Payne. It set the bar so high for itself and tried so hard but it just shat the bed so hard in the end. Other movies are definitely dumber/lamer/more fail but the ratio of effort:outcome on Max Payne is brutal. At least with stuff like Doom they didn't take it too seriously.

How SE looks at it, they believe it will sell more when you slap the Final Fantasy logo on it, and in most occasions, it works.

Mortal Kombat
Prince of Persia
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Gonna add in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-li as well, just cause I found it epically hilarious. Chris Klein trying way too hard to sound bad ass cracks me up every fucking time. I honestly thought it was a gag at first, then I realized he was seriously trying that hard to be a bad ass. It brought tears to my eyes. Also, Kristen Kreuk is hot.
